Top Fishing and Camping Spots in Siskiyou

Fishing and camping go hand in hand in Siskiyou. With dozens of lakes, rivers, wild streams and open space – California’s north is the perfect spot for a peaceful outdoor adventure! Here are some of our favorite spots to cast away in Siskiyou.

Kangaroo Lake

Whether you fly fish, baitcast or spin, your chances of getting a bite at Kangaroo Lake are good! The 25-acre lake is 110 feet deep and is full of brook, brown and rainbow trout. The campground is about 14 miles from Weed with 18 sites for visitors to choose from. Get ready for a night of campfires and marshmallows!

Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort

Local favorite Lake Siskiyou is about two miles from Mount Shasta and is known for being a great place for reflection. The large campground area here is surrounded by tall pines. Easily spend a few days here catching smallmouth bass, lake, brown, rainbow and brook trout.

Orr Lake & Campground

There is nothing better than fishing with majestic Mt. Shasta in the background at Orr Lake. Located in Macdoel, you’ll find trout, bass and catfish here. The popular fishing area is the perfect place for a camping getaway from the crowds.

Castle Lake

If you’re looking for something a little more secluded, head to the breathtaking Castle Lake. The glacial lake is surrounded by towering pine trees making the view unbeatable. Fish for gold shiners, brook and rainbow trout here. There are also six campsites around the lake, making it the perfect spot to relax after a day of fishing.

Heart Lake

If you’re up for a hike before a day of fishing, make your way to Heart Lake. The view alone makes the trip worthy – at least we think so! Fisherman often find small brook trout here. There are also a few camping spots around the lake you can call home for the night.

Elk Creek Campground & RV Park

You’ll be one happy camper at the Elk Creek Campground & RV Park. Nestled in the majestic Klamath National Forest on the banks of Elk Creek, visitors can spend the day fishing or better yet – panning for gold. Bring your pan!

McCloud Reservoir

Lake McCloud is a reservoir on the McCloud River and is truly breathtaking. The lake is home to rainbow and brown trout. You can easily camp along the McCloud River or head to the nearby Mount Shasta Ski Park for more outdoor fun and to set up camp for the night. Camping here is free on the weekends!

Medicine Lake

Off the beaten path east of Siskiyou is Medicine Lake – a great spot for rainbow and trout fishing with gorgeous views. The Medicine Lake Recreation Area is also a popular camping spot among locals and visitors alike. Spend the week camping, boating, fishing and swimming!

Sacramento River

Adventurous fly fishing takes place along the Sacramento River in Dunsmuir where you’ll often find rainbow trout. There are multiple access points along the popular river, which is made up of riffles, runs, pocket water, small holes, huge pools and undercuts. You can camp at Sims Flat Campground located along the river and if you need additional fishing gear during your trip, head to the historic Ted Fay Fly Shop!
