It’s back to school season. The air is a little cooler, the days a little shorter and you’re fighting every urge to bring out the pumpkin spice. But don’t rush to October just yet as September Celebrations around Siskiyou are just beginning to kick into high gear. For a ten-day window including the second and third weekends in September called X Days, Siskiyou is chock-full of pilgrimage-worthy artistic and cultural events so come stay a few days and explore everything from world-class films, guerilla art and bodypainting to steampunk, bluegrass and chili. Here are a few of the bigger events you can plan your trip around with many pocket events and experiences to explore while you’re here!

McCloud Mountain Bluegrass (9/13-9/15)

This year (2019), the ever-popular McCloud Mountain Bluegrass Festival will kick off X Days in Siskiyou. This bluegrass festival takes place on the southern slope of majestic Mount Shasta and will bring four days of music, jamming, brews, wine, and artisan crafts and vendors to the charming town of McCloud. Typically the second weekend in September, make sure to check it out! For plenty of amazing lodging and food options while in McCloud, visit here.

Yreka Art Hop with Craig Tracy &

“CUBA” photo exhibition opening at Liberty Arts Gallery in Yreka (9/13)

In north Siskiyou, the arts are alive on historic Miner Street this year when Craig Tracy – judge for the famed Television show “Skin Wars” – teams up with the Yreka Art Hops to bring you “My Body, Your Canvas.” It will be a body-painting event unlike anything you’ve ever seen in California’s North before, when Tracy creates his famous work on his model right before your eyes! This event will happen at the same time on the same street as the Liberty Arts Gallery opening of the photo exhibition “CUBA,” and promises to light up Yreka’s downtown! (Insider note: this year [2019] keep an eye out for some guerilla art having to do with Yreka as the “County Seat!”) For great places to eat and stay while in Yreka, visit here.

Jefferson State FLIXX FEST (9/19-9/22)

One of the hottest tickets during the third weekend in September is the Jefferson State Flixx Fest. Nestled in historic Scott Valley (Fort Jones) among the majesty of the Marble Mountains, Flixx Fest proudly claims to be the premier film festival of the “mythical” 51st State of Jefferson.  Now in its fifth year, the festival showcases world-class narrative features, documentaries and shorts and draws filmmakers and audience from all over. The popular event also culminates with a “not to miss” farm to fork awards dinner at California Heritage Farms. It’s like “Outstanding in the Field” – but with local fare and done as only Siskiyou can do it. For more information, visit here. Lodging options can also be found here.

Dunsmuir Steampunk Event (9/21-9/22)
The perfect bookend to X Days, the Steampunk Event celebrates the cultural sub-genre of science fiction and fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. It also takes place in the charming railroad town of Dunsmuir – the perfect setting for a genre that adores alternative Victorian or American “Wild West” locales. So bring gadgets, wares, widgets and wonder to Dunsmuir on the third weekend in September, this year on September 21 and 22nd. The signature event will feature costumes, inventions, competitions, vendors, beer, food and music. For more info on food and lodging in Dunsmuir, visit here.

This list is by no means exhaustive! There is so much to see and do, even outside of these September Siskiyou X Days events. For more info on X Days events, visit here. For other ideas of what to do in Siskiyou, visit here.
