They have an extensive cocktail list with their own small-batch handcrafted spirits, creative weekly food specials, and some truly divine desserts made by their pastry chef extraordinaire. Other mentionable favorites are Sage Restuarant, a top-notch dining experience located in the McCloud Hotel, or Baldovino’s Wine Bar and Kitchen, an impressive and intimate new fine dining restaurant in downtown Mount Shasta. Cobra Lily Bar & Bottle, a favorite wine and tapas bar located in Dunsmuir, serves up locally nibbles and a stellar wine list. Be sure to call ahead and make reservations whatever you choose!

How to play?

Take a scenic drive down Highway 96 along the Klamath River and enjoy some conversation and time together. Be sure to stop at Quigley’s Station and share a slice of pie, simply the best! We have complied a whole list of scenic road trips that are sure to inspire you.

Pack a picnic with goodies from Bee Kind Bakery for a secluded spot along the McCloud River Falls trail to enjoy a peaceful breakfast together or grab a fresh juice and nourishment from Alua’s Thrive Bar and stroll around Lake Siskiyou under view of the snowcapped peaks of Mt Shasta.

Adventurous couples might go snowshoeing at Mt Shasta Nordic Center or skate around the Siskiyou Ice Rink at Mt Shasta’s Shastice Park. A slower pace date might want to peruse the many art galleries and museums that Siskiyou has to offer, the options are endless, whatever your speed. Book a couples massage at Sacred Moutnain Spa or just go shopping on Yreka’s Historic Miner Street exploring the stacks at Zephyr Coffee and Books or paint a pottery craft together at Bella Art Works.

When the day begins to close, enjoy a glass of wine and some small bites at Yreka’s inviting The Wine Bar, they feature great local musicians regularly. If you are more of a beer-drinking couple, try cozying up to a crackling fire pit and grab a board game and sip one of their many outstanding craft brews in the heated outdoor patio at Etna Brewing Company.

Lastly, we recommend you do some stargazing while visiting. The night skies in Siskiyou are incredibly clear, making it a perfect place for some cosmic romance. Where to Fish

Siskiyou County is a paradise for anglers, boasting cool water rivers and streams alongside pristine mountain lakes. Notable waterways include the Klamath, McCloud, and upper Sacramento Rivers, as well as the scenic Lakes Shastina and Siskiyou. Freshwater sport fishermen flock here in pursuit of various bass and trout species, especially brown and rainbow trout, chinook salmon, and steelhead. Fly fishing enthusiasts particularly favor the McCloud and upper Sacramento Rivers, while North and West Siskiyou is renowned for some of the best steelhead waters in the state, especially along the mighty Klamath. Our lakes offer a more relaxed experience and can be great for families. You can fish from the shore, a dock or a boat, just check with regulations at your spot of choice before heading out. EAST

Butte Valley Museum

The Butte Valley Museum and Historical Society goals are to recognize, preserve, display and interpret the history of
Butte Valley in East Siskiyou. Located in Dorris, this museum offers the history of the Tulelake Basin and Butte Valley homesteads, military veterans, the Modoc Indian War and the Tule Lake Internment Camps.

WW II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Tule Lake Unit

The East Siskiyou town of Tulelake played a role in the WWII era as it was home to Japanese American Tule Lake Segregation Center and Camp Tulelake, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed Japanese American internees. Later this location housed Italian and German Prisoners of War in the 1940s. Explore the grounds and learn about this history that is often left out of textbooks.

Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Established by President Roosevelt in 1908 as the nation’s first waterfowl refuge. The visitor center has a variety of exhibits, displays, brochures and wildlife-oriented programs. Refuge staff and volunteers are available to answer questions and help plan activities. Refuge wildlife is colorfully described by exhibits at the Visitor Center. Information regarding viewing opportunities, sightings, road conditions, and regulations is available.

Lava Beds National Monument

A uniquely natural and cultural site. Explore human history through Native American rock art and Modoc War sites, and the heritage of homesteaders, ranchers, cave explorers, “CCC boys,” and the modern Modoc and Klamath tribes. The monument is also known for scores of lava-tube caves and well-preserved young volcanic features. It lies on the flank of the Medicine Lake Volcano, which is the largest volcano by area in the Cascade Range.

NORTH

Siskiyou County Museum

Located in the county seat of Yreka, this museum educates on the history from pre-historic time to the earliest pioneer settlements. The Museum is an interpretive center for the history of the region and includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, programs, and a research library. There is machinery, early transportation vehicles, and both historic and recreated buildings on display.

Montague Railroad Depot Museum

The 1887 redwood building that was built in just five weeks as the town came to be, features many railroad and other artifacts from Montague and the Shasta Valley, including the station agent’s fully-furnished living quarters upstairs. The building served at the rail depot until the lines shut down in 1977 and was moved away from the tracks to its current location.

WEST

The People’s Center

The Cultural Center and Museum of the Karuk Tribe exhibits items representative of Karuk culture and history. Opened in Happy Camp in 2002, the Karuk People’s Center is a 5,000 square foot facility that includes an exhibition gallery, a gift shop, a Basketweaving classroom, a library, a collection’s storage area and the Karuk Language Program Office.

Fort Jones Museum

Fort Jones is the home of the self-proclaimed “biggest little museum” featuring a Shasta rain rock and an exterior of fossils, obsidian, and Native American stone tools. Be sure to take time to peruse the thousands of unique artifacts, photographs and geologic samples from the nearby area.

Etna Museum

The Museum of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eschscholtzia Parlor No. 112, is located in the first Town Hall of Etna, which also housed the fire department, library and jail, and was built to resemble Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This building was threatened by a fire when the Mason’s hall went ablaze next door in December 2023, but the Museum was saved along with all of the treasures inside.

SOUTH

Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum

The Weed Lumber Town Museum is a collection of artifacts and photographs of the people who founded and lived in Weed. Artifacts from the old lumber company store and from the company hospital are on display. Some rooms are decorated with original pieces to resemble a typical home from the early 1900s as well as a room dedicated to law enforcement with jail cell and booking area. Exhibits in the old courthouse feature the timber industry and life in early Weed and the life of Charlie Byrd, the first elected African American county sheriff in California.

Sisson Museum 

The Museum is located on ancestral lands of the Shasta and Wintu Tribes and stands today in a 1906 building on the grounds of the Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery. Established by Justin Sisson, one of the founding fathers of Mount Shasta. Permanent and changing exhibits display the history, culture, and geology of the Mount Shasta area.

Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Museum

Located in the former S.P.R.R. train and crew dispatchers’ office, the museum features much more than just railroad photographs and artifacts. Learn the story of Alexander Dunsmuir, a bit of town history, and check out the impressive Native American basket collection.

Heritage Junction Museum of McCloud

The Museum displays the logging and sawmill heritage of the town of McCloud and the surrounding area through artifacts, photographs and written materials.an impressive collection of artifacts from McCloud’s history, including the giant Corliss steam engine that powered the McCloud sawmill from 1903 until 1979. The museum also has a huge photographic collection covering the entire history of the town and its surrounding country.

Deer Mountain Snow Park

Snowmobiles are technically sleds, right?  This area can be described as a mecca for all winter sports. Also called Chuck Best Snowmobile Park, this snow lover’s heaven welcomes snowmobilers, sledders, skiers and snowshoers to over 250 miles of trails, valleys, vistas and more in the area. Winter camping is available, as well as restrooms and a warming hut on site. Snowmobile rentals are available seasonally through Fun Factory. They host guided backcountry tours as well. Make sure to check the Open/Closed status of the snow park here and pre-arrange any tours or snow machine rentals with Fun Factory before heading out. There is lots of winter fun to be had at Deer Mountain!

Mt Shasta Ski Park

If you don’t partake in skiing or snowboarding, a trip to “The Ski Park” can still offer a rush of alpine fun. Enjoy sailing down the 300-foot-long side by side tubing lanes, accessed by a magic carpet. Rental tubes are provided with your pass and are sold in tw0-hour increments. Pre-purchasing tickets is recommended so check the Ski Park’s website before heading out. Be sure to spend some time at the lodge and outdoor fire pits too!

Mt Shasta Nordic Center

Also located on the Ski Park Highway, the Mt Shasta Nordic Center is a wonderland of winter recreation. Although not exactly downhill sledding, folks come here to enjoy Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. This is a great place to find some solitude and delight in the slushing of the snow beneath your feet. Day passes, lessons, and rental equipment are available as well as pull-sleds for the little ones. This is an epic way to embrace your surroundings on a crisp winter day!

Snowman’s Hill

By far the most popular and well-known sledding spot in South Siskiyou. This place can be found at the summit of Highway 89 between Mount Shasta and McCloud, across from the Ski Park Highway intersection. There is ample parking and bathrooms are on site. This is a big hill, so be prepared to fly!

Bunny Flat

Who can say they have gone sledding on a volcano with the 5th highest peak in California? You can! Just driving up to Bunny Flat, via Everett Memorial Highway is epic. This trailhead on the slopes of Mt Shasta, is a recreation area and access point to the upper mountain. Open throughout the winter, this location has bathrooms, parking and snowy slopes sure to offer some winter fun. This is also the gateway for many backcountry skiers and mountaineers heading further up the mountain. Be sure to check current road conditions before selecting this location!

Shastice Park

The city park in Mt Shasta, has gentle sloping hills on the opposite end of the parking lot from the Siskiyou Ice Rink. This is a great place for less adventurous sledding or families with kiddos. This is also right nearby downtown Mount Shasta, so after a fun-filled winter day outdoors, a hot mug of cocoa is not too far away!

Bundle up!

You can gear up for your next snow adventure at a number of local shops, our favorites are McCloud Outdoors & Gear Exchange, The Fifth Season, and Sportsmen’s Den. These locations rent and sell a variety of winter outdoor apparel, gear, and guide services. Sleds can be purchased at local hardware stores such as Ramshaw Ace or Solano’s in Mount Shasta. Always be sure dress warm and pack your vehicle appropriately for winter weather when venturing out, AWD or chains are a must in these parts. Check conditions and accessibility beforehand as weather and snow coverage is variable at many of these locations. Have a blast, we know you will!

The Weed Store

Built in 1946, a funky shop selling shirts, gifts and souvenirs. This store, located right on the main drag when coming into Weed is where visitors can purchase the famous “I Heart Weed” gear and other tongue and cheek souvenirs. Definitely worth a stop!

Hunter Orchards Pumpkin Patch

What fall day in Siskiyou is complete without a little pumpkin spice and a visit to northernmost California’s original U-Pick pumpkin patch at Hunter Orchards.  Located at 14431 Old Westside Rd, in Grenada, this farm has acres and acres of pumpkins to choose from in all sizes and shapes. Lots of varieties of winter squash, a hay maze for the kids, apples, pears, fresh cider, jam, and fall holiday decorations for sale. Open daily in the month of October, 10 am to 6 pm. McCloud Halloween Pub Crawl

Leaf peeping and bar hopping go hand and hand, right? Join a group of 21+ adults in costume on Oct 25th for a stroll through historic McCloud, stopping at all of the local watering holes for some Siskiyou craft brews and cocktails. Goblins and Ghouls should meet up on Main Street in downtown McCloud at 4pm.

Trick or Treating

A handful of communities around Siskiyou are host to annual trick-or-treating events for kids. Weed’s historic district will transform into a Trunk-or-Treat  and businesses on Yreka’s Miner Street will be handing out candy on Halloween from 2- 5pm. Montague, Mount Shasta, Fort Jones and Etna also host family-friendly Halloween activities. Check the event calendar for current schedule updates.

Denny Bar Co.

Tucked in the North Siskiyou town of Etna, Denny Bar Co. is a distillery, sit-down restaurant, AND hidden pizza gem! Their custom-built massive wood-fired oven is front and center as you enter the establishment, and their signature pies are as creative as they are crispy. Denny Bar Co. is a great spot for a cheesy slice after a day out on the trail!

Recommendation: Try the Burrata, Pepperoni and Hot Honey, what’s not to love about this combo?!

Smoked Tomato Pie

You notice the intoxicating smell of pizza right when you walk in. Quality of ingredients is what sets STP apart from the other options in Yreka. From the tomatoes to the house smoked chicken and pork, all the way to the hand filled cannoli, you can’t go wrong! Smoked tomato pie has a casual and friendly atmosphere that is great for groups, and they host local musicians regularly.

Recommendation: PPP: Smoky pulled pork, pineapple and peppers. They infuse the sauce with pineapple juice and smoked jalapenos and drizzle everything with BBQ Sauce!

Sparky’s Landing

Hand tossed dough and a wood fired oven, no wonder Sparky’s can produce up to 300 pizzas in a night! This downtown Mt Shasta restaurant specializes in craft cocktails, pastas, and steaks but we have our eyes (and tastebuds) focused on their insanely good pies. While Mt Shasta has a few options, we are currently swooning over Sparky’s Landing!

Recommendation: THE GOAT: Garlic olive oil, cheese blend, Goat Cheese, prosciutto, Caramelized onions, topped with balsamic glaze. Can we say YUM!

Pizza Factory

For over 40 years, Pizza Factory in Dunsmuir has been serving up their tasty hand-tossed pizzas. Their motto proudly declares “We Toss’em, They’re Awesome,” and they don’t lie. A mom-and-pop atmosphere and friendly service is the testament to why this pizzeria has been serving the people of Dunsmuir and its visitors for over four decades!

Recommendation: ALL MEAT: Piled high with Canadian bacon, salami, pepperoni, ham, signature sausage, and bacon! Bring your appetite!

The Marble Rim Gallery is a non-profit community gallery in Etna in the community of Scott Valley, California. Everything displayed and for sale in the gallery is made by local artisans. Marble Rim showcases the work of its members and hosts a special show celebrating a featured artist every month. They host a number of shows and events throughout the year. Yreka: Liberty Arts

A non-profit contemporary art gallery featuring local and guest artists, community outreach, and educations programs. In addition to its exhibitions in the gallery, Liberty Arts opened up their Explorations Arts Education program, classes meet the gallery with a docent tour highlighting interesting techniques, subjects and ideas. The students then proceed to the studio, also on Miner Street where they can create their own artwork using the elements and techniques they have experienced in the gallery. The exhibition schedule and Exploration classes are all available on the Liberty Arts website.

Happy Camp: Karuk Tribe People’s Center

As the cultural center for the Karuk Tribe, the People’s Center is devoted to the preservation, promotion and celebration of Karuk history, language, traditions and living culture. Located in Happy Camp, the headquarters of the Karuk tribe, the exhibition gallery at the People’s Center hosts a collection of historic photographs, woven baskets, beadwork, and more made by the Karuk people. The art of basketweaving has been refined over time and passed down through many generations, keeping the cultural heritage of the Karuk people alive.

Located in the heart of downtown Dunsmuir, Siskiyou Arts Museum strives to enrich the lives of artists, residents, and visitors to Siskiyou County through exhibition, sale, and interpretation of the visual, literary, and performing arts. They host and present programs and events to educate, strengthen, serve, and sustain the local art community. The SAM features 60 to 100 local and regional artists in the gift shop and two large gallery spaces.

Solitude and natural beauty are two things that come to mind when visiting Siskiyou in November. The rush of summer tourists has passed, and things seem to start settling down to prepare for winter. The weather can be crisp in the morning for a cozy coffee drink at Zephyr Books & Coffee, but warm by the afternoon for a refreshing cold beer on the patio at Etna Brewing Co. Wearing layers is a must and the sunsets are unbeatable. Whether you prefer to enjoy the outdoors in the wild Klamath National Forest, in caves at Lava Beds National Monument, or overlooking of one of the three McCloud River Waterfalls, November is one of the most ideal months for exploring the outdoors. This is due to our many microclimates. Whether it is mountainous, high desert, rugged alpine, valley or river, the varied climates across Siskiyou add to the extensive biodiversity and endless outdoor opportunities that can be had year-round.

Explore Native American History in Siskiyou

November is Native American History Month, a time to celebrate traditions, language and stories of the indigenous communities of this land. Native people have been traced to inhabit Northern California for over 10,000 years and have maintained a strong cultural identity in Siskiyou through much adversity over time.

The tribes that call Siskiyou home are the Karuk, Shasta, Modoc, and Yurok. The Karuk, which is one of California’s largest tribes is headquartered in Happy Camp, in West Siskiyou. Rain Rock Casino: Expansion and Destination Resort 

This month also announces an exciting addition to Siskiyou’s many lodging options. Yreka’s Rain Rock Casino, owned by the Karuk tribe, proudly completed a major expansion project. They nearly doubled the number of slot machines on the gaming floor to an expanded 6,000 square foot non-smoking area. Another exciting part of the project is the 43,000 square foot Rain Rock Casino Resort Hotel that, completed in November 2024, will comprise of 72 guest rooms and additional 8 cottage suites on the property. Five splash pools and soaking tubs, an outdoor fire pit, 4,000 square foot event center, gift shop, and May Yaj Asian Express Restuarant are some of the other new and exciting features. These additions will make Rain Rock a destination resort, and a must-see when visiting North Siskiyou. There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

Black Bart’s Hideout

Black Bart, the infamous gentleman bandit of the Old West, is believed to have used a hidden cave behind Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, as one of his hideouts during his stagecoach-robbing spree in the 1880s. Nestled off I-5, this secluded spot along the Siskiyou Trail offered Bart both concealment and access to fresh water, allowing him to maintain his famously clean and refined appearance. Known for his polite demeanor and poetic notes left at crime scenes, Bart robbed Wells Fargo stagecoaches across Northern California and Southern Oregon, with several heists concentrated in Siskiyou County. His hideout beneath the waterfall remains a point of intrigue and local legend, drawing visitors curious about the outlaw who vanished mysteriously after serving time in San Quentin. Lemurians

The Lemurians are mythical beings said to originate from the lost continent of Lemuria, a fabled land believed by some to have sunk beneath the Pacific Ocean. According to legend, survivors of this ancient, spiritually advanced civilization took refuge deep within Mount Shasta. These beings are often described as tall, wise, and peaceful, living in a hidden city called Telos beneath the mountain. The myth gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many still believe that the region is a spiritual wonderland. Mount Shasta has since become a focal point for spiritual seekers and New Age believers, who view it as a portal to higher realms and a sanctuary for the Lemurians, whose presence is said to be felt through mysterious lights, strange encounters, and an aura of mystical energy surrounding the mountain. Spiritual Retreats and Sacred Places are popular destinations for visitors looking for an energetic experience.

Sasquatch

Siskiyou is considered one of the most active regions for Sasquatch sightings in the United States, earning it a reputation as the heart of Bigfoot country. With reports dating back to at least 1850, the area—particularly the Marble Mountains, Mount Shasta, and the Klamath River corridor—has been a hotspot for alleged encounters. One notable account involves three brothers who, during a 2010 expedition west of Yreka, reported hearing strange, deep vocalizations and later found signs suggesting the presence of a large, elusive creature. Researchers like David Paulides have documented dozens of sightings in the region, emphasizing its rich history of Bigfoot lore and the belief among some locals that these creatures may even winter in the area’s remote cave systems.

Coyote Steals Fire

The Karuk tribe, whose name means “upriver people,” have a rich tradition of oral storytelling that reflects their deep connection to the Klamath River and surrounding lands in northwestern California. Their legends often feature Coyote, a central figure in many Native American mythologies, who is portrayed as both a trickster and a cultural hero. In one well-known Karuk myth, Coyote Steals Fire, Coyote cunningly brings fire to humanity, a tale that explains the origin of fire and emphasizes themes of cleverness and sacrifice. Other stories include the Acoru Maidens, who represent natural elements and seasonal cycles, and tales of spirit journeys, where characters travel to the spirit world to gain wisdom or restore balance. These narratives are not just entertainment—they serve as moral lessons, cultural preservation, and spiritual guidance, passed down through generations in the Karuk language

Llao and Skell

The legend of Llao and Skell is a powerful tale from Klamath Native American mythology that explains the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Llao, the god of the underworld, lived beneath Mount Mazama (now Crater Lake), while Skell, the god of the sky, resided above Mount Shasta. When Llao fell in love with a mortal woman and was rejected, he erupted in fury, bringing destruction to the land. In response, Skell descended to protect the people, and the two deities engaged in a cataclysmic battle. Their war was so intense that it shattered Mount Mazama, forming Crater Lake. In the end, Skell triumphed, casting Llao back into the depths and sealing his domain with water. The lake and its central island, Wizard Island, are said to be the remnants of Llao’s defeat, symbolizing the eternal balance between darkness and light. The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway that passes trhough Siskiyou on its way to Crater Lake.

Lost Humbug Creek Gold Mine

One of the most enduring lost treasure legends in Siskiyou is that of the Lost Humbug Creek Gold Mine. In the 1850s, during the height of the California Gold Rush, a miner traveling through the Humbug Creek area reportedly stumbled upon a rich vein of gold-bearing quartz while resting under a tree. He managed to collect a sack full of gold and brought it to his family in Hawkinsville, telling them of his accidental discovery. Tragically, when he returned to retrieve more, he fell ill and died before he could relocate the site. Despite numerous attempts by his family and later treasure hunters, the exact location of the mine was never found again. This tale, combined with the area’s documented gold production and the mysterious naming of “Humbug” by disillusioned miners, has kept the legend alive, drawing modern-day prospectors and curious adventurers to the region in hopes of striking it rich.

Mill Creek’s Missing Gold

The legend of Mill Creek’s Missing Gold is one of Siskiyou County’s most tantalizing tales of lost treasure. According to local lore, during the height of the California Gold Rush, a group of miners traveling through the Mill Creek area were ambushed by bandits. In a desperate attempt to protect their hard-earned fortune, the miners buried a large cache of gold somewhere near the creek before fleeing or being captured. Though some of the miners may have survived, none ever returned to reclaim the treasure—perhaps due to death, imprisonment, or simply being unable to relocate the exact spot. Over the decades, treasure hunters have scoured the area, drawn by whispers of the hidden hoard, but the gold has never been found. The story persists, fueled by the rugged terrain, the creek’s shifting course, and the enduring hope that the treasure still lies buried beneath the soil, waiting to be discovered.

Yreka Gold Heist

The Yreka Gold Heist is one of the most dramatic and mysterious crimes in Siskiyou’s modern history. On the morning of February 1, 2012, courthouse staff discovered that a significant portion of the county’s historic gold display—featuring nuggets and artifacts collected since the 1850s—had been stolen from the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka. The thieves had broken in through a bathroom window and smashed a hole in the display case, grabbing what they could reach.
