The Ney Springs Canyon Trail is in fact an old dirt road. The fact that the road can still be driven on should not discourage hikers from travelling the route on foot. In truth, the road is quickly becoming a trail as it degrades more and more each year. Moreover, it would not be a pleasant or easy drive for low clearance vehicles. Now, having gotten the nitty-gritty out of the way, what does this old road offer? It enters into a densely forested canyon through which raucous Ney Springs Creek crashes over boulders and small cataracts.

Category: Easy

Distance: 1.5 miles

Elevation Gain: 308 feet

Route Type: Out & Back

Directions: From 1-5 N, take exit 738 toward Central Mt. Shasta. Take a sharp left onto W Lake St. (signs for Lake Siskiyou). Continue onto Hatchery Lane, then turn left onto S Old Stage Rd. After 2.3 miles, take a slight right onto W A Barr Rd. Turn left onto Ney Springs Road, then turn left to stay on Ney Springs Road. Trailhead will be on the right.

Highlights: Beautiful views of Lake Siskiyou, dog-friendly

If you’ve ever seen someone wearing a T-shirt that reads “University of Weed,” you might have laughed, thinking of it as a silly reference to a certain green plant that is legal and enjoyed all over California. What you might not have realized is that T-shirt is a relic of a visit to Weed, a charming South Siskiyou town that’s worth a stop when you’re next heading North.

Siskiyou is also home to a variety of natural landmarks that hold centuries of fascinating history, such as the Lava Beds National Monument. At this historic site, you can explore any of more than 700 ancient caves, formed by flows of lava 65,000 years ago. You’ll also find a wide array of Native American rock art, and you can explore historic battle sites.

As you watch the sun sink below the horizon, you might be tempted to call it a day and head out — but then you’d be missing out on the absolutely gorgeous views that Siskiyou only offers after dark. Because we are so far North, Siskiyou has the privilege of avoiding the light pollution of more populated areas, making stargazing the perfect way to end a day of outdoor adventuring. Check out our favorite stargazing spots here, and make sure to work some time under the night sky’s glittering canopy into your itinerary.

The largest park in Yreka, Greenhorn Park has been built around an expansive reservoir sourced by Greenhorn Creek. Trails weave through the surrounding hillside, lapping the lake, while fishermen take advantage of both off-shore and boat fishing. A large picnic area, play structure, open field and a new log cabin information center and restroom are located at Upper Greenhorn. Along the south side of the lake there is old gold mining machinery and a small ghost town. Lower Greenhorn maintains a community soccer field, play structure, large picnic areas, horse-shoe pits, and two restrooms. Lake access is available from Lower Greenhorn and both sections have their own parking areas.

Activities at Greenhorn Park include Yreka Youth & Adult soccer during the fall and spring at Lower Greenhorn; cross-country meets, mountain bike races, fishing tournaments; and city-wide festivities for Yreka’s 4th of July celebration.

Mount Bradley looms 3,000 feet above the town of Dunsmuir, the Mt. Bradley Ridge begins west of Castle Peak and continues east for another 4.5 miles before dropping abruptly into the Sacramento River Canyon. It is easy to see why a lookout would be placed in this location, offering what may be the most superb view in the area.

Founder, Frank Rizzo, was born in Italy and moved to the United States when he was eight years old. Years later he married his wife, Gene, and they bought the old Pilgrim’s Rest Motor Court. They transformed it into the Hi-Lo Motel & Café, which has continued to grow over the years to become the Hi-Lo Motel, Cafe & RV Park. Frank was never afraid to take a chance, which allowed him to build several business ventures. He taught his children his formula for good business and made sure they learned the value of hard work. Frank and Gene’s daughter, Margaret, has operated the Hi-Lo since 1971. All of Margaret’s children and even one or two of her grandchildren have helped in making the Hi-Lo a true family business.

A popular destination for visitors to Castle Crags State Park is the scenic overlook at the end of Vista Point Trail. This easy half-mile round trip hike leads to a triptych of views. On your left, you’ll spot the Gray Rocks rising above evergreen ridges. On your right, there is a clear view of Mount Shasta. In the center, rise the Castle Crags, a fortress of daunting granite peaks. It’s a three-course meal of views, reached by a quick and effortless walk.

Start from the parking area at the end of Vista Point Road, where a well marked trail sets out for Vista Point. The quarter-mile long trail takes a horseshoe-shaped course up to a landing on Kettlebelly Ridge. The trail starts out heading southeast, but swings around to face northwest toward the Castle Crags. At 0.15 miles, as the trail is making a curve to the right, you will pass the top of another trail on the left that descends toward the campground. Continue up the trail, which levels out and arrives at the scenic overlook.

Reaching the overlook, you will first be struck by the head-on view of the Castle Crags. The mountains rise 3,000 feet above the overlook and are made up of jagged rugged peaks.

Find a large opening in the trees to your right and it will line you up perfectly for a clear views north toward Mount Shasta. This massive volcano is over 14,000 feet tall and completely covered in snow during the winter months. In geological terms, Mount Shasta is relatively young compared to the area’s other mountains, having begun forming just 530,000 years ago.

There is also a gap in the trees to the left, providing a window up a canyon carved by Castle Creek. Across the canyon there are evergree ridges topped by rocky peaks known as the Gray Rocks, which look different from the Castle Crags and are actually made up of greenstone.

There are picnic tables and a viewing scope at the vista point, allowing you to really enjoy the surroundings. Vista Point Trail is wheelchair-friendly and gains 50 feet in a quarter mile, with a typical grade of 4% and a typical width of 4 feet. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on trails in Castle Crags State Park. There is an entrance fee for Castle Crags State Park ($10 as of 2015).

This hike is the only dog-friendly trail in Castle Crags State Park.

Category: Easy

Distance: .5 miles

Elevation Gain: 50 feet

Route Type: Out and Back

Directions:Take Interstate 5 to exit 724 in Castella (located 14 miles south of Mount Shasta City and 44 miles north of Redding). At the bottom of the offramp, turn northwest onto Castle Creek Road. Drive 0.3 miles and turn right into the park entrance. Inside the park, bear right and drive almost two miles up Vista Point Road to the parking area at the road’s end where the trail begins. This road goes through the campground before heading up Kettlebelly Ridge. You will pass the start of the longer Castle Trail just before reaching the parking area for Vista Point Trail.

April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

Leashed dogs are allowed on Gray Butte Trail, one of the only dog-friendly hiking trails at Mt. Shasta. When you’re ready to eat, head to the dog-friendly Axe and Rose Public House, a casual dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

Shasta. The 1.2-mile loop hike around the lake is dog-friendly. The 4.9-mile Black Butte Trail, the largest of Mt. Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, welcomes canines as well.

WINEMA HISTORIC LODGE

Natural Bliss like Nowhere Else

Whether you’re in the mood for hiking, biking, kayaking, sledding or swimming, you’ll find it all a short distance from wherever you are staying in McCloud.

McCloud River Waterfalls Trail & McCloud Falls (Lower, Middle, Upper)

Take a short, beginner-friendly hike to see one of McCloud’s most iconic natural vistas, the McCloud Falls. Boasting three stunning waterfalls, this trail takes you above breathtaking works of natural art that you’ll only find here in Siskiyou. If you’re daring and the weather’s nice, you can even jump into the surrounding water by the Lower Falls — though we advise you to exercise extreme caution when jumping from high surfaces.

The Great Shasta Rail Trail

In all, the Great Shasta Rail Trail is 80 miles of scenic trail. From McCloud, you can access one end of the trail and follow it as far as you’d like. Whether you’re hiking or biking, you’ll find local flora, animals and stunning views. Dogs are also welcome on the trails, as long as they are leashed.

McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-8818" src="https://discoversiskiyou.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/20180319-DS-BACKCOUNTRY-107-1024x683.jpg" alt="Skiing on Mt.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Shasta Ski Park or the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center.

Stay in Style

Whether you’re staying for a weekend trip or settling in for longer to really explore the region, McCloud has plenty of cozy places to rest after a tiring day of adventuring.

The Yreka Creek Greenway lies completely within the city limits of Yreka, California, along 5 miles of Yreka Creek and Greenhorn Creek. Yreka Creek flows south to north and Greenhorn Creek flows west to east. The location of the project is the Yreka Creek Corridor from the Belle Avenue neighborhood park at the south limits to the City Corporation Yard at the North I-5 Interchange. Greenhorn Creek from the dam to the confluence with Yreka Creek is also included.

Yreka Creek comprises about ten percent of the Shasta River basin and is the first significant tributary to the Shasta mainstem. A portion of the anadromous steelhead entering the Shasta system use Yreka Creek as spawning and juvenile rearing habitat. Four miles of Yreka Creek flows through the City of Yreka, which is the largest urban area in the Shasta River watershed and the county seat of Siskiyou County. As a result, the lower portion of Yreka Creek is a highly visible and public watershed in the Shasta Basin, having both local and regional importance.

The Greenway continues to grow thanks to volunteer neighbors, groups and agencies, guided by the Yreka Creek Committee and the City of Yreka. Explore and enjoy the Greenway’s Visitor Center behind the Siskiyou County Museum, the trail heading north from the Oberlin Road Trailhead, and the trail west of Deer Creek Way.
