Juanita Lake offers a unique combination of recreation opportunities. The campground has 23 campsites and one 50 person group camp. The 55 acre lake is regularly stocked with trout and has a bass and catfish population. There is a 1.5 mile paved, barrier free trail that circles the lake with 2 fishing jetties for easy access to the lake.

The 55-acre lake is regularly stocked with rainbow and brown trout and has both a catfish and bass population. No motors are allowed on the lake; however its size makes it ideal for rowboats, canoes, paddle boards, float tubes, or small sailboats. A 1.5-mile paved path extends around the entire lake, providing easy access. During the summer, a camp host watches over the campground. There is no charge for day use and facilities include barbecue grills, picnic tables, water, vault toilets and boat ramp. There are 23 campsites, along with a 50-person group site available to reserve. These sites are level and improved. Maximum stay is 14 days. The campground is open April – October dependent on weather. The lake is open year-round for fishing. At 5,100 ft. elevation, access to Juanita Lake can be difficult during the winter months.

Directions: Approximately 17.6 miles south of the Oregon-California border on Hwy 97, head West on Ball Mountain Road. Proceed W 2.7 mi to the fork in the road go right on the paved road for 3.8 mi to its end. Turn left and go .2 mi to the campground.

For more information check with the Goosenest Ranger District located on Hwy 97 just south of Macdoel. Check with Goosenest Ranger District for current conditions.

Deer Mountain Snowpark is the heart of winter sports for northern California. The warming hut welcomes all winter users and the trails are shared with snowmobiles, skiers and snowshoers. The Klamath, Shasta Trinity and Modoc National Forests combine efforts in winter to manage a tri-forest area of over 250 miles of snowmobile trails. Deer Mountain provides access from the western side of the Goosenest District to this extensive trail system. A paved parking area suitable for RV’s, a warming hut and loading ramp are provided.

Martin’s Dairy is a peaceful, high mountain campground on the Little Shasta River. Somewhat flatter than other districts, the Goosenest features miles of roads and trails suitable for fat tire bikes, and several new trails are in the works. Deer Mountain and Four Corners feature marked snowmobile routes that turn into fun mountain bike trails in the summer months. The particular ride described here starts in the meadows and aspens around Martin’s Dairy Campground then ascends Ball Mountain, with nice views of the Shasta Valley, Butte Valley and Mount Shasta. The route is mostly on an un-maintained dirt road that is closed to 4WD traffic, so expect lots of peace and quiet. Also expect to see deer, bear and eagles as you pass through high elevation old-growth forests.
