“Most beautiful course in the North State. Just great.” Gunther Sturm, Palo Cedro, CA

“Great experience, magnificent scenery! Great golf experience.” George Beach, Sacramento, CA

Mount Shasta Resort’s 6,035-yard par 70, 18-hole course opened in the summer of 1993. Located in Siskiyou County, California, the spectacular demanding layout was designed by Jim Summers and Sandy Tatum at an elevation of 3,500 feet above sea level. The course features natural alpine terrain, undulated greens, and breathtaking views. The holes are uniquely different with three sets of tees and yardages.

You may also see a wide variety of wildlife on the course. The facility is open to the public, with a limited membership available. You may choose to walk or rent an electric cart. Tee times are available one week in advance. Overnight guests can book tee times at the same time they make their lodging reservations. Since we do experience all four seasons in Mount Shasta, the weather and rates will change.

“Our golf course is challenging and scenic without being overly long. Every golfer has some favorite courses they like to play. The reason they prefer one facility over another is dependent on their experience. If the overall experience is good, then our course will become a ‘favorite’. I could play golf here everyday and never get tired of it.” Rod Sims, Head Golf Pro

Presentation: Thursday October 23rd, 7 pm at Mt. Shasta Sisson Museum

Fieldtrip: Sunday October 26th – 1-4 pm at Gateway Trails (Caravan from museum leaves at 1:15pm)

Join the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum and Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) for a presentation on California’s Fire Ecology from an explorer and artist’s lens. Pyroscapes is the creative exploration of the fire landscape in Californian ecosystems, created by local artist and scientist, Cody Markelz. The project is part science, part data visualization, part art, and part personal story.

Pyroscapes are dynamic across time, space, and governmental jurisdictions. If you are a resident in California, you live in an active pyroscape. Let’s talk about building a resilient pyro-culture to live alongside wildfire. In addition to a lecture, Cody will provide mini-illustrated zines discussing fire ecology principles. These mini-zines will be used as portable lecture notes for the field trip visiting an area that was recently burned. Cody will teach nature journaling observational skills in and around the burn area focusing on the fire history of that specific piece of ground. Registration is required to attend: https://mountshastaecology.org/upcoming-community-events-2/

Field Notes: Preparing for Your Trip to Siskiyou.

Over the years, friends and family from urban and rural areas have spent time with me in Siskiyou County, and before writing this post, I took a very informal poll of my friends and asked:

What would have been helpful to know about Siskiyou County before planning your trip?

Below are the tips that came from my conversations:

Lodging

Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget and needs. For example, my mom loves staying at hotels in Siskiyou with a breakfast option. I enjoyed my experience at The McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Whereas one of my girlfriends, who lives in San Francisco, adored her long weekend at the Mt. Shasta Resort. It’s next to Lake Siskiyou, and she enjoyed being near the water.

PRO-TIP: When you narrow down your lodging options, don’t be afraid to call the property. Local employees can help you determine if their establishment is a good fit for your needs, and offer tips for things to see and do in the area.

Internet Access

Siskiyou County is geographically diverse and large; to give you a sense of scale it’s roughly the size of Massachusetts and 60% of the land area is public forest land.

Depending on what area of the county you’re visiting—and what activities you do—the Internet could be slow, spotty, or nonexistent. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it’s the perfect place to unplug from email, social media, and work projects.

PRO-TIP: Tell your work colleagues, friends, and family that you’ll have limited Internet access while in Siskiyou. Create an out of office notification for your inbox, too.

Cell phone reception

Cell phone reception is adequate along Highway 5 and in the central part of the county. However, in the far east and west parts of Siskiyou reception can be spotty.

PRO-TIP: Buy a paper map of the area. If you need a cell phone connection in the great outdoors, consider looking into satellite options.

Driving conditions

No matter what time of year you visit Siskiyou, stay abreast of driving conditions. In the winter, you’ll experience rain, snow, and wind in various parts of the county, so carry chains in your car. During the summer season, you might encounter smoke from wildfires, and just like winter, it’s essential to stay updated on road conditions.

PRO-TIP: The California Department of Transportation keeps their website updated with travel alerts. Before you embark on a road trip, check the site for updates.

Quirks of small-town life

Most small towns have unique quirks, and that’s what makes them fun. It also means business may or may not be open when you expect. For example, you won’t find much open after 9 pm in most towns in Siskiyou.

PRO-TIP: If a store, coffee shop, or restaurant is closed, use the opportunity to explore what’s nearby or ask a local for recommendations. I’ve done this in large cities like Paris, France and Portland, Oregon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Farm to Table

Siskiyou County is a rural region, so compared to large cities, there are aren’t as many dining choices. However, it is a rich agricultural area and you will find unique and delicious dining options in Siskiyou that source local food. For example, I love eating dinner at Denny Bar Co. in Etna. Also, Café Maddalena in Dunsmuir uses local ingredients, offers a seasonal menu, and daily specials. And don’t forget to check out California Heritage Farms! They have a U-pick berry patch with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers that’s open from June to October seven days a week.

If you’re in need of a snack or coffee or both, check out Zephyr Books & Coffee in Yreka. Zephyr serves Northbound Coffee—that’s roasted in Mt. Shasta—plus homemade scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more.

PRO-TIP: Make reservations, and look for unique farm-to-table dining opportunities in Siskiyou. Also, use Google Maps to locate restaurants, ask locals for tips, and your hotel for restaurant recommendations.

***

And last but not least, take advantage of the resources on DiscoverSiskiyou.com. You’ll find a plethora of information about where to stay, what to do, see, eat, and more on the website and social media feeds.

Happy travel planning!

Many people still come to see “Castle Peak” despite its name not being official. The mountain flanks where the Battle of the Castle Crags took place happened in 1855. The Battle of the Castle Crags was the last known conflict where the Native Americans depended on bows and arrows to protect themselves. The well-known poet Joaquin Miller took place in the battle and a decade later western artist Albert Bierstadt climbed the flanks of “Castle Peak” to paint a scene of Mount Shasta.

One of the least known waterfalls in the Mount Shasta area is Wagon Creek Falls. It is not thought about much, it gets lost amongst all the other beautiful waterfalls. It is part of a group other waterfalls that are on Mt. Shasta, some other ones in Castle Crags, and some on the South Fork of Castle Creek. More times than not, these all would be very popular to go look at, but right now they are not being seen. Something that is being missed with the tall 35-40 foot, rectangular cataract, Wagon Creek Falls is a plunge with classic waterfall lines. It’s lines look just like Vernal Falls in Yosemite, but just a bit smaller. There is also another short but well known waterfall upstream. The two together make a great pair for those that enjoy waterfalls.

The upper section of Wagon Creek Falls is quite difficult to reach. Due to it being hard to reach a lot of people are unable to see its beauty. The cascades and waterfalls can be seen from a couple different ways. They are both long and steep hikes, but whoever takes the trek up with be in awe over the most beautiful and powerful creeks in the region. The falls can be reached via Wagon Creek from Mt. Eddy Bowl.

Getting there:

Unfortunately, the upper section of Wagon Creek is difficult to reach. There is no doubt that this has, in part, contributed to its anonymity, and to the anonymity of Wagon Creek Falls. The cascades and the waterfalls can be approached from a couple of directions, both of which are long and in some cases, gruelingly steep journeys. For those how make the trek, they are rewarded with one of the most wild and beautiful and powerful creeks in the region. The falls can be accessed via Wagon Creek from the Mt. Eddy Bowl.

Ash Creek Falls is one of the finest falls in California. It is set far back in Ash Creek Canyon as the waterfall makes a huge scene, gushing over the cliff in a strong freefall. The water hits a rocky area and creates a a big shower. The waterfall is 330 feet high and is a combination of Mud Creek Falls and Whitney Falls. It does not have as much volume as Mud Creek Falls, but it has plenty of power.

It is thought to be the most beautiful sight on Mt. Shasta or some even argue the most beautiful anywhere in California. Mud Creek Falls may be seen as a lot bigger but with the view encompasses it makes the waterfall feel smaller. Ash Creek Falls fits perfectly in Ash Creek Canyon.

This waterfall has been left off of the most popular guide for waterfalls surprisingly. This is not the worst thing because it will not attract as many people. Besides not being in the guidebook, the waterfall is at the end of a cross-country route making it difficult to reach the falls attracting less people. The cross-country route begins at the Brewer Creek Trail which is the most isolated trail on Mt. Shasta. The steep trail over barren volcanic slopes takes you to a vista that is approx. 0.25 miles from the falls. Those that want to be even more up close can take a trail to the top of the waterfall and farther to the opposite side of the canyon where the views are not nearly as good. You can reach the Cold Springs area from here as well. When you get to Ash Creek Falls you will not forget it, it is that amazing.

Situated at the north end of the Strawberry Valley, the nearly perfectly conical peak is visible from almost everywhere in the Mount Shasta area. Only a quick jog to the left prevents this from happening but the freeway comes within such close quarters to the base of the peak that it is easy to make out numerous interesting observations about Black Butte while just passing by at high speed in a car.

Castle Lake is a must-see for outdoor adventurers in northern California, and can get crowded on weekends in the summertime for good reason. The drive up to the lake afford stunning views of Mt. Shasta, and the parking area at the lake affords close lake access for kayakers, where there’s a four-foot hand launch. The Castle Lake Trail itself serves as a great introduction to the Trinity Alps and Mt. Shasta area as a whole. This is also a great day experience when taken in tandem with a hike up to Heart Lake that originates at Castle Lake. In good winters, ice fishermen and ice skaters experience the lake in a whole new way.

Root Creek Falls is a large, multi-tiered waterfall that spills 500+ feet over the granite Castle Dome just south of Dunsmuir in the Castle Crags wilderness area. This impressive cataract remained “undiscovered” until only a decade or two ago, safeguarded by manzanitas, poison oak, rattlesnakes and the occasional bear. But for the intrepid hiker, the reward is a little slice of Yosemite without the crowds. The best access is via an unofficial trail off Root Creek Trail. If you access Root Creek Trail via the Castle Dome Trail, there is a fee to park.

You’ll find gold shiners, brook and rainbow trout. Best baits are salmon eggs, roe, mini-crawlers, red worms and bright-colored power bait. Ice fishing during the winter is truly rewarding lifetime experience. Break the ice for fishing holes with an auger, axe or shovel. Dress warmly and bring a lawn chair. Check with the Mt.

This route starts and ends in McCloud. The suggested direction is to ride out 89 (watch for fast traffic) to Mt Shasta Blvd and then up Old McCloud (FS 31). That way you get to enjoy the fast and smooth downhill on 89 into Mt Shasta and then climb up the bumpy and in places, deteriorating Old McCloud/Forest Service 31. This ride is mostly good road with just a 2 – 4 miles of Old McCloud being rough road and gravel in a few places where it has fallen apart.
