• M5 — Five Marys Burgerhouse
  Operating with a guiding philosophy of “Great food, great cocktails, and great company,” M5 is everyone’s favorite burger spot in Fort Jones, and it’s easy to see why. This restaurant is run by the Heffernan family, and all of their meat is raised to the highest standards right down the road, at their family ranch. They ensure that every dish is made with the best possible quality of ingredients, and as a result, you can taste the difference. Stop by for one of Mary’s famous Sidecars at the bar or a juicy burger and consider taking a some of their meat cuts home from the cooler cases or their farm store where they pack and ship all of their farm raised products.   If you’re cut from an adventurous cloth, you’ll love a day spent hiking Etna Summit, a popular starting point for hiking and exploring the rugged wilderness of the Klamath National Forest. The views from the summit are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the valley below and the surrounding mountains. This hike is considered intermediate to difficult, so be sure you and your group are physically prepared for a somewhat challenging hike. The organization was created by a diverse quintet of artists and crafters in 1991. They joined together out of frustration because artshows were being produced by non-artisans, and they found that they and many other talented local artists had no place to display and show their artistic creations. Since 1991, the Gallery has remained open to the public, giving its members a chance to fulfill their dreams of displaying and selling the products of their artistic endeavors.

THE SCOTT VALLEY THEATRE COMPANY AND THE MARBLE RIM GALLERY ARE NOW PARTNERS IN THE ARTS.

Sharing similar missions and common artistic goals made a formal affiliation agreement between the Scott Valley Theatre Company, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, and the Marble Rim Gallery, a community artists’ cooperative, a perfectly logical choice. Members of the Scott Valley Theatre Company and the Marble Rim Gallery will now work together as “partners in the arts”, to encourage and promote performing and visual arts in Scott Valley. By virtue of this formal affiliation, the Marble Rim Gallery will operate under the non-profit umbrella of the Scott Valley Theatre Company. The formal affiliation between the Scott Valley Theatre Group and the Marble Rim Gallery will be beneficial to local performing and visual artists alike because of their parallel goals. The Marble Rim Gallery (“Gallery”) artists’ cooperative grew out of the Scott Valley Creative Arts Guild, which was established in April of 1991. Similar to the SVTC, the mission of the members of the Marble Rim Gallery is to promote awareness, appreciation, and a passion in our community for all types of artistic endeavors by providing a gallery and other public events for local artists to exhibit and sell their artistic creations. The gallery is located at 11835 Main Street in Fort Jones. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. [Insert website info] The Marble Rim Gallery is also a place for teachers to share their skills, and a center for artists to conduct classes and workshops in drawing, water color painting, pine needles basketry, and gourd art. The Gallery currently has twelve members in its cooperative group. The members work together to sponsor annual and monthly artistic events. Gallery-sponsored events include the Scott Valley Artisans’ Street Fair in May, the Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair in December, and monthly First Friday Open House receptions which feature art by local high school students and other artists, music by local musicians, and poetry readings. These events encourage artistic diversification and the cultivation of new and upcoming local artists. Gallery members also assist in a number of community service organizations through sponsorship and/or through artistic donations for fundraisers by groups such as Madrone Hospice, Fort Jones Rotary, local libraries, FFA, Cattlewomen, and the Farm Bureau. As a result of its formal affiliation with the Scott Valley Theatre Group, members of the Marble Rim Gallery will actively promote and assist with the production of events at the Avery Memorial Theatre with the goal of encouraging even more community involvement with both performing and visual artistic endeavors in Scott Valley.

Carl Craig and Harvey Palmer bought the business in 1947 but, wanted to concentrate more on their well-drilling business, sold Scott Valley Feed Co. to Otto and Maida Brogger in November of 1949.

When Highway 3 was completed in 1956, bypassing Greenview, the Broggers acquired land next to the new highway and built the present location. They opened the doors on January 2, 1959. The Broggers then expanded their feed, seed, and farm supplies by adding nursery stock, fruit and shade trees, indoor and bedding plants, along with garden and gift items. Maida’s talent can still be seen in the store on the handmade “GARDEN & GIFTS” cedar signboard she made with letters formed from pine branches. Otto, as secretary of the Scott Valley Chamber of Commerce since its foundation, did much of the Chamber’s work in the store along with his feed business.

Carl and Tory Austin bought the Scott Valley Feed Store from Otto and Maida Brogger when the Broggers retired from the feed business in 1975. The Austins added another department – the “Craft Corral”, featuring art and craft supplies. Their son, Benny, added the tack department and his wife, Kathy, enlarged the nursery stock, adding ground cover and perennials.

As Scott Valley Feed neared the half-century mark in 1989, Carl and Tory turned the reins over to son Benny. He and Kathy have again expanded the nursery to a full garden center and are waiting to serve you.

There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

The Ranch has been operated as a trophy trout catch-and-release fly fishing destination since 1993. Those who have experienced Sugar Creek Ranch at its best over the last 20 years will recall the property’s unique 114 acre landscape with its huge piles of river rock dug up during the gold mining days. Many of the eight picturesque ponds are hidden from view as small jewels in a rocky desert. The solitude and silence are very special.

The Marble Rim Gallery is a non-profit community gallery in Etna in the community of Scott Valley, California. Everything displayed and for sale in the gallery is made by local artisans. Marble Rim showcases the work of its members and hosts a special show celebrating a featured artist every month. They host a number of shows and events throughout the year. Yreka: Liberty Arts

A non-profit contemporary art gallery featuring local and guest artists, community outreach, and educations programs. In addition to its exhibitions in the gallery, Liberty Arts opened up their Explorations Arts Education program, classes meet the gallery with a docent tour highlighting interesting techniques, subjects and ideas. The students then proceed to the studio, also on Miner Street where they can create their own artwork using the elements and techniques they have experienced in the gallery. The exhibition schedule and Exploration classes are all available on the Liberty Arts website.

Happy Camp: Karuk Tribe People’s Center

As the cultural center for the Karuk Tribe, the People’s Center is devoted to the preservation, promotion and celebration of Karuk history, language, traditions and living culture. Located in Happy Camp, the headquarters of the Karuk tribe, the exhibition gallery at the People’s Center hosts a collection of historic photographs, woven baskets, beadwork, and more made by the Karuk people. The art of basketweaving has been refined over time and passed down through many generations, keeping the cultural heritage of the Karuk people alive.

Located in the heart of downtown Dunsmuir, Siskiyou Arts Museum strives to enrich the lives of artists, residents, and visitors to Siskiyou County through exhibition, sale, and interpretation of the visual, literary, and performing arts. They host and present programs and events to educate, strengthen, serve, and sustain the local art community. The SAM features 60 to 100 local and regional artists in the gift shop and two large gallery spaces.

Donated to the city of Etna by the generous Avery family, this theatre was the movie hub of the valley for decades and now has been converted to an exciting live performance space. The Avery Theatre, a raked house, seats nearly three hundred and features a large stage and excellent acoustics.  It is the goal of the Scott Valley Theatre Company Board to offer enriching cultural, community, theatrical and musical experiences to the people of our area.

Etna High School is privileged to be able to utilize the full-service theatrical facilities at the the Avery for their live student productions. Successful high school productions staged at Avery in the past were Our Town, Tartuffe, Bye Bye Birdie, The Apple Tree, Shakespeare, Abridged and Arsenic and Old Lace and You Can’t Take it With You. In addition to plays, every February the high school stages “Improv. Night”  modeled after the hilarious television show, “Whose Line is it Anyway?” There is always a spring offering in May which includes the Etna High Choir and Drama Department.  The Scott Valley Unified School District hosts a yearly talent show for all elementary students.

The Denny Bar Company brick building is located in downtown Etna — and was originally built in 1880 by the Parker Campbell Company, which sold goods and merchandise to the miners and settlers of the 1880s. In 1892, the second story became the site of the first high school north of Red Bluff, California, with an enrollment of 15 students. The second floor was also later used for public lectures, concerts, entertainment, as well as rooms for rent.
