Shasta view has an Island Canopied Queen Bed; fluffy towels; custom tiled floors, shower and backsplashes; a private garden with a fire pit and original art. Our cozy BnB has a fully equipped self-serve kitchen with thoughtful amenities and smart design. Easy on/off I-5 to Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, McCloud or Mineral Springs activities.

THE SPACE

WHAT IS THE WELCOME LIKE?

There is a Welcome Board outside the cottage. We love to have special little surprises, to get the oohhs and aaahhhs! We like a 15 to 20 minute heads-up before your arrival. When you arrive we will take you on a tour of the cottage and gardens which are down the driveway OR we can make arrangements for you to let yourself in. You will park your car at the bottom of the driveway.

WHAT IS THE COTTAGE LIKE?
It is a studio apartment ( 16×20) that has custom porcelain tile and a water closet (toilet, hand washing sink), shower closet, sink/stove kitchen area, sitting area, clothes closet, washer and dryer (no extra charge), a work desk/table which also has a mirror and storage for a dressing table. a monitor heater and a sleeping “island” bed. It is in the city limits with a church parking lot on one side and a residential lot on the other. The Freeway is close which makes it easy to get on and off of. There is no air conditioning although there are fans and the ability to open windows at night for cool mountain air.

HOW MANY DOES THE COTTAGE SLEEP?
Inside the cottage, the queen platform bed comfortably sleeps 2. There is also a sofa sleeper and a chaise sleeper with sleeping bags in the upper cupboard for 2 more.
The Cottage is ideal for a small family, a couple or singles.

WHAT IS A SELF-SERVE BREAKFAST?
We provide eggs for your breakfasts. Our guests recognize the value of thoughtful amenities that allow you to cook and bake your own self-serve meals as the cottage has everything you need to cook and serve meals except lunch and dinner foods. There are spices, salt and pepper, oil, Bisquick/pancake mix, and sugar and butter. We also provide milk, coffee beans and fruit. Please let us know your preferences, any allergies or gluten or lactose intolerance.

WHAT IS THE WATER LIKE?
The cottage has an under counter water heater which provides hot water for a short shower. Hot water is instant and is set very hot. Start with cold water and add hot to get the right mix. The wash is cold water only. The drinking water is pure and good here. It comes right off the mountain streams and is bottled in our area.

HOW CLOSE IS THE FREEWAY?
The freeway is nearby. Once you close the cottage door and windows it can barely be heard as the cottage is well insulated. To us the freeway is a constant calming sound. It provides easy on and off to the various attractions of the area.

WHAT IS THE GARDEN LIKE?
Garden Gate Cottage nestles down our hill. It is calming, peaceful, private, pleasant and appealing to the senses. The outdoor garden has easy style with intimate areas for conversation, eating or just relaxing. In Winter the garden is dormant and the outdoor furniture is stored. There is a view of Mt Shasta from the Cottage garden. The Conversation Areas: The Fire Pit Area with seating. We set the fire pit with wood so all you have to do is strike the match. The outdoor furniture provides lounging, seating and conversation in season. The Eating Areas: A small table and chairs just outside the cottage door. A table and chairs in the Pergola. The Relaxing Areas: The Bubbling Fountain ( in season) with seating. The bench with a tin roof. Great for listening to rain.

WHAT ARE SUMMERS LIKE?
Summer days can be very warm with cooler evenings and night air. There are fans, but no air conditioning. Open windows at night for cool air, but close them during the day when it is warm out.

WHAT ARE WINTERS LIKE?
Winter months are November through February. Nights are colder than days. Usually the sun comes out and it warms a bit even in winter. There are only a couple of times a year that we have severe winter storms. We rarely have to put on chains, but we always carry chains as we live in the mountains. You should carry chains when you come to visit in the winter. The freeway is frequently plowed in case of snow and rarely gets completely closed down. Our road is a main street and regularly gets plowed during a snow. If snow is building up it is wise to park at the mouth of our driveway unless you have snow tires. We have a snow blower.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Expect to be cared for but not hovered over. Expect friendly folk. Expect vegetables and/or fruit from the garden during the growing season which is June to September or October.
Expect cool nights and warmer days (no air conditioning).
Expect changeable weather in the winter and options for winter sports.
Expect us to keep the garden watered.
Expect the gardener. The gardener is my 96-year old Dad who lives with us. He definitely has a ‘green thumb’ and loves to work the garden. You may see him or hear the scritch-scratch of his spade. He quietly goes about the garden in some area each day of the growing season; hoeing weeds, picking produce, tilling the soil or watering. He may not have his hearing aids in, but If you can engage him in conversation, he loves it.

GUEST ACCESS

These are the things You have access to…

…Wifi. The provider is slow and sometimes streaming movies is frustrating, but you can gain on-line access. The password is in the Welcome Book.

…A TV that swivels toward the bed or toward the sitting area. There is no Cable TV. There is the TV monitor for you to stream your own movies.

…The cottage garden directly in front of the cottage with firepit.

…A private parking space, outdoor pergola to the left of the cottage and outdoor stairway.

…Optionally you may Schedule an art lesson at Juliart School with Julie Grossman. There is oil, acrylic or water color painting, fused and slumped glass, stained glass, mosaics and sculpture.

…Off limits is the vacation rental on the lower level of the main house, the garage and sheds.

Interaction with guests

We love to interact with our guests. When you register and get your key we greet you and give you a tour of the Gardens and Garden Gate Cottage. We bring fruits, vegetables and flowers from our gardens in season. If you would like to use the fire pit we will have wood for you. Feel free to ask us questions or text for information during your stay. If you are interested we can suggest places to hike or visit. Someone is always present at the Main House or in the garden during your stay.

OTHER

There is a 10% city occupancy tax and a 2% Siskiyou County Tourism Improvement District(SCTID) assessment for stays under 30 days. You will pay this with cash or (Hidden by Airbnb) when you register and get your key at the main house. Over the bed and skylight is a curtain scarf, but if you want to sleep in, a face mask would be a good thing to bring. There is no air-conditioning, but there is a fan. At night you can open the windows with screens for cooler night air. During the day keep the windows closed to keep the cooler air in.

Imagine yourself gliding on a beautiful frozen outdoor ice rink under the snowcapped peaks of Mt Shasta!
Cozy Up with a Warm Beverage

Grab a Hot Cocoa or warming Coffee or Tea drink at one of our many excellent local coffee houses and drive-thru espresso spots. Siskiyou knows how to keep you warm from the inside as you explore during the winter months. Some of our favorite spots to get cozy and caffeinated are Zephyr Books and Coffee in Yreka, Farmhouse Bakery in Etna, Ukonom Gold in Fort Jones, Spill the Beans in McCloud, Theory in Mt Shasta, and Ellie’s Espresso in Weed.

Hit the Slopes at Mt Shasta Ski Park

Siskiyou’s premiere ski resort is located on the southside of stratovolcano Mount Shasta, between the towns of McCloud and Mt Shasta. There are a total of 38 ski trails covering 635 acres of skiable terrain, accessed by 6 lifts. The base area is located at 5,500 feet elevation, so even if you just come to enjoy the après at the lodge and fire pit, you will be sure to feel that you are in the alpine! A Tube Park, Rentals and Lessons are all available for beginners and for those more intermediate and experienced shredders, Gray Butte Chair, installed in 2023, opened up higher elevation terrain and access to some of the most epic backcountry spots on the mountain. “The Ski Park” as locals call it, is independently run and definitely has a family vibe you just got to check out!

Attend a Holiday Event

Holiday events are all the buzz around Siskiyou this time of year and each community has its own spin on things. McCloud hosts Winter Fest every weekend December with a kids day, Yuletide bazaar and a special showing of the movie the Polar Express. Mt Shasta is home to the annual Winter Magic event with an ugly sweater run, horse and carriage rides and a holiday parade. Yreka hosts Discover Siskiyou’s own signature event, the Night of Lights. This evening combines an outdoor holiday market with downtown shopping, a tree lighting and lots of free fun for families and kids. Check out the events calendar for more holiday events.

Bear Trail (College of the Siskiyous) is a 2.1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Weed, California that features a great forest setting and is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, trail running, and nature trips and is accessible year-round.

A quick, mostly flat trail around the perimeter of the COS campus through well maintained forests. There are glimpses of Mt. Shasta but very few of the developed campus. You’ll feel like you are in the woods.

It has become a very popular event since we put it in Bel Air Park in Weed. The park setting is inviting and a cool place to be. The Community Pool is available to everyone on Saturday, and there is usually live music or a DJ playing 50’s through 80’s music to keep the rhythm going. There are vendors for food and the COS College Craft Fair share a part of the venue. There is always something for the car buffs and their families to participate in!

April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it! Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

In 1893, the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Company bought timbered property in what is now the downtown area of Weed, from H.S. Williams and his wife Olive Williams. When the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill north of Black Butte desired to sell their business, Abner Weed was willing to buy it. He sold his mill on the east slope of Mt. Eddy to a man by the name of Durney and that mill was subsequently known as Durney’s Mill until about 1920. In 1897 Abner Weed bought for the sum of $400.00, the Siskiyou Lumber and Mercantile Mill and 280 acres of land in what is now Weed.

Roseburg Lumber is still operating here, but many of the original buildings are being taken down. Weed now has a community college, College of the Siskiyous. Weed has outlived the wild, lawless days of its beginnings, it has succeeded in becoming an incorporated city, and the old description “one man’s town”, or “company town” no longer applies. But one man Abner Weed, lives on in the name of the town.

Hours: Daily (last week of May – September 30th), 10am – 5pm. Special off-season tours are available by appointment.

Siskiyou is packed with rich history at every turn. What better way learn the stories of the past than through a visit to one, or a few, of our many museums and monuments. Experience the natural history that made our epic landscapes. See relics and cultural history of Native Americans, early settlers and immigrants, and discover the economic and industrial impacts of the gold rush, lumber, farming, and railroading industries that helped to shape this region.

**Be sure to check hours before visiting, as some museums operate seasonally. **

Butte Valley Museum

The Butte Valley Museum and Historical Society goals are to recognize, preserve, display and interpret the history of
Butte Valley in East Siskiyou. Located in Dorris, this museum offers the history of the Tulelake Basin and Butte Valley homesteads, military veterans, the Modoc Indian War and the Tule Lake Internment Camps.

WW II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Tule Lake Unit

The East Siskiyou town of Tulelake played a role in the WWII era as it was home to Japanese American Tule Lake Segregation Center and Camp Tulelake, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed Japanese American internees.

The Sisson-Callahan Trail (SCT) is the longest trail in the Mount Shasta area, with the sole (and obviously significant) exception of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail measures a little over 9 miles from the trailhead near the confluence of the North Fork of the Sacramento River with the river’s main fork, to the junction of the SCT with the PCT. Over the course of its journey, the trail follows a beautiful, wild river, passes through narrow canyons, traverses a large meadow complex, climbs out of a rugged, rarely seen canyon and descends through the Deadfall Lakes Basin, one of the prettiest spots in the region.

Category: Medium

Distance and Elevation: Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Route Type: Out & Back

Directions: The Upper portion of the Sisson Callahan Trail can be accessed at the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead located on Forest Road 17. From Mt Shasta City, drive north on Interstate 5 through the town of Weed and exit at Edgewood/Stewart Springs Rd. Turn left, drive under the freeway, then right on Old Stage/Old 99. Turn left on to Stewart Springs Road, after 4 miles Forest Road 17 splits off to the right. Follow the road to the summit and then about a mile down the other side to Deadfall Meadows Trailhead.

Trail: For the first mile and a half, the SCT winds its way up through Deadfall Meadows crossing the creek multiple times, then crosses the PCT trail and heads up to the Upper Deadfall Lakes. Right after crossing the PCT, one can take a short side trip to Lower and Middle Deadfall Lakes. For mountain biking this section is about 60% riding and 40% hike a bike. The next mile and a half of the trail takes you up past both Upper Deadfall Lakes and arrives at a saddle and a junction to either hike to Mount Eddy or continue down the SCT. This section is about 50% ridable and 50% hike a bike. The total ascent is 1800 ft of climbing in just under 3 miles. On the descent, the trail switchbacks its way down to the North Fork of the Sacramento River which it then follows for most of the way down. This section offers multiple stream crossings, rock gardens, flowy single track, and beautiful meadow scenery. During the descent, the trail sometimes hits a forest service road. Stay on right on the roads and you will eventually see the trail to the left. After approximately 10 miles riders will come to a flat opening with the North Fork of the Sacramento River on the left and the main stem of the Sacramento River in front of them. Riders can then cross the river to the left and follow the road down to the North Shore of Lake Siskiyou making sure to stay right at intersections. Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Highlights: Observe the Pacific Crest Trail that intersects Siskiyou County, beautiful canyon views

The lower portion of the historic Sisson-Callahan The trail is single track with steep drop offs on the river canyon and extended rocky sections with cobbled rock and small boulders. While most of the trail is challenging, some sections are packed pine needles and less difficult. There are no major intersections off the trail. Halfway down you come to an old road. Climb up for about 150 feet and watch for the trail to continue on your left. The end of the trail also becomes an old road.

Category: Medium

Distance and Elevation Gain: Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Directions

The Upper portion of the Sisson Callahan Trail can be accessed at the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead located on Forest Road 17.

Trail

For the first mile and a half, the SCT winds its way up through Deadfall Meadows crossing the creek multiple times, then crosses the PCT trail and heads up to the Upper Deadfall Lakes.

Martin’s Dairy is a peaceful, high mountain campground on the Little Shasta River. Somewhat flatter than other districts, the Goosenest features miles of roads and trails suitable for fat tire bikes, and several new trails are in the works. Deer Mountain and Four Corners feature marked snowmobile routes that turn into fun mountain bike trails in the summer months. The particular ride described here starts in the meadows and aspens around Martin’s Dairy Campground then ascends Ball Mountain, with nice views of the Shasta Valley, Butte Valley and Mount Shasta. The route is mostly on an un-maintained dirt road that is closed to 4WD traffic, so expect lots of peace and quiet. Also expect to see deer, bear and eagles as you pass through high elevation old-growth forests.
