Hunter Orchards Pumpkin Patch

What fall day in Siskiyou is complete without a little pumpkin spice and a visit to northernmost California’s original U-Pick pumpkin patch at Hunter Orchards.  Located at 14431 Old Westside Rd, in Grenada, this farm has acres and acres of pumpkins to choose from in all sizes and shapes. Lots of varieties of winter squash, a hay maze for the kids, apples, pears, fresh cider, jam, and fall holiday decorations for sale. Open daily in the month of October, 10 am to 6 pm. Food trucks and Live music will be on site Saturdays. Check back in the events calendar for updates.

McCloud Halloween Pub Crawl

Leaf peeping and bar hopping go hand and hand, right? Join a group of 21+ adults in costume on Oct 25th for a stroll through historic McCloud, stopping at all of the local watering holes for some Siskiyou craft brews and cocktails. Goblins and Ghouls should meet up on Main Street in downtown McCloud at 4pm.

Trick or Treating

A handful of communities around Siskiyou are host to annual trick-or-treating events for kids. Weed’s historic district will transform into a Trunk-or-Treat  and businesses on Yreka’s Miner Street will be handing out candy on Halloween from 2- 5pm. Hit the Slopes at Mt Shasta Ski Park

Siskiyou’s premiere ski resort is located on the southside of stratovolcano Mount Shasta, between the towns of McCloud and Mt Shasta. There are a total of 38 ski trails covering 635 acres of skiable terrain, accessed by 6 lifts. The base area is located at 5,500 feet elevation, so even if you just come to enjoy the après at the lodge and fire pit, you will be sure to feel that you are in the alpine! A Tube Park, Rentals and Lessons are all available for beginners and for those more intermediate and experienced shredders, Gray Butte Chair, installed in 2023, opened up higher elevation terrain and access to some of the most epic backcountry spots on the mountain. “The Ski Park” as locals call it, is independently run and definitely has a family vibe you just got to check out!

Attend a Holiday Event

Holiday events are all the buzz around Siskiyou this time of year and each community has its own spin on things. McCloud hosts Winter Fest every weekend December with a kids day, Yuletide bazaar and a special showing of the movie the Polar Express. Mt Shasta is home to the annual Winter Magic event with an ugly sweater run, horse and carriage rides and a holiday parade. Yreka hosts Discover Siskiyou’s own signature event, the Night of Lights. April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

McCLOUD HOTEL

Situated at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta, the McCloud Hotel was built more than a century ago but offers modern-day amenities sure to please everyone, including the family pet. Dog treats are available at the front desk, and dog beds for any size canine can be provided as well.

A park across the street from the hotel is a beautiful place to walk your dog, or stroll amongst the shops in Historic Downtown McCloud, a nationally registered historic district with 17 buildings designated as landmarks. Leashed dogs are allowed on Gray Butte Trail, one of the only dog-friendly hiking trails at Mt. Shasta. When you’re ready to eat, head to the dog-friendly Axe and Rose Public House, a casual dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel.

RAILROAD PARK RESORT

Stay in one of the Railroad Park Resort’s caboose lodging units, complete with modern amenities, or rest your head in a vintage cabin, perfect for families or large groups. There are also 23 RV sites and 24 tent campsites throughout the property. Best of all, dogs are welcome, and there’s even a dog park area where your puppy can run off leash.

While staying at the resort, make sure to try your hand at fishing in the Sacramento River, bike around the historic town of Dunsmuir (where the resort is located) or head 2 miles away to hike the lower Castle Crags section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Dog Trail in the Castle Crags Wilderness Area offers spectacular views of the Castle Crags and other peaks, and as you might have guessed, dogs are welcome.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

While there, make sure to spend some time at the Dunsmuir Botanical Garden, which is adjacent to the resort. The 10-acre wooded area features a variety of native species, perennial plants and walking trails, ideal for hiking and viewing the natural beauty. Dogs are welcome.

HI-LO MOTEL, CAFÉ & RV PARK

All of the 41 rooms, four apartments and RV Park of the Hi-Lo Motel in Weed are dog-friendly (and cat-friendly, by the way). The family-owned-and-operated site features a café that serves homemade comfort food.

Among the sights to see in Weed are the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, a 136-acre art installation and war memorial located in the Klamath National Forest. Just northeast of Weed is Lake Shastina, where you can hike, fish, swim, camp and more while taking in a beautiful panoramic view of Mt. Shasta. The 1.2-mile loop hike around the lake is dog-friendly. The 4.9-mile Black Butte Trail, the largest of Mt. Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, welcomes canines as well.

WINEMA HISTORIC LODGE

Popular with hunters, bird-watchers and explorers, Winema Historic Lodge in Tulelake offers large-sized lodge rooms and motel rooms, and dogs are welcome. Perfect for families or large groups, Winema features RV parking with hook-ups, as well as on-site dining options.

Tulelake is home to the unique Lava Beds National Monument, which features more than 800 caves, Native American rock art sites, historic battle fields and more. Dogs are allowed in developed areas, but not on trails, or in caves or buildings.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the first in a series of national wildlife refuges to conserve wetlands, resulting in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Tulelake. Start your adventure at the new visitor center for a look at exhibits, displays and more. Dogs are permitted at the refuge.

One of the darkest times in U.S. history is memorialized at the Tule Lake National Monument. The monument includes the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a large facility where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, and Camp Tulelake, originally a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that was converted to an additional detention facility for Japanese Americans. Dogs are allowed, although not in buildings, including the visitor center.

HUNGRY AND THIRSTY

If you’re looking for a place to eat and drink that’s open to dogs as well, visit Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen in Mt. Shasta. Dogs are allowed in the outside seating area, so bring your furry friend and enjoy scrumptious goodies such as Duck Fat Fries, Savage Salad and a What the Puck sandwich. You can wash it down with a craft or bottled beer, of which the choices are plentiful, all while you enjoy Northern California’s beautiful weather.

Also in Mt. Shasta is the popular Yaks Shack, a bakery and café with outdoor seating only, so, of course, your dog is more than welcome. From coffee and pastries to barbecue and beer, Yaks is the place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or just stop in for a snack and a breather as you visit the town, enjoying the beautiful mountain, activities and sensational sights.

There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

Directions: Take Stewart Springs exit off of Interstate 5 just north of Weed, Calif. Go west on Highway 97 towards Gazelle for 0.2 mile. Take a left on Stewart Springs Road, continue for four miles and take a right on Route 17. Follow Route 17 for 9.3 miles to the top of Parks Creek Summit and the intersection with the PCT. There is a large parking area on the east side of the road.

Roseburg Lumber is still operating here, but many of the original buildings are being taken down. Weed now has a community college, College of the Siskiyous. Weed has outlived the wild, lawless days of its beginnings, it has succeeded in becoming an incorporated city, and the old description “one man’s town”, or “company town” no longer applies. But one man Abner Weed, lives on in the name of the town.

Hours: Daily (last week of May – September 30th), 10am – 5pm. Special off-season tours are available by appointment.

Butte Valley Museum

The Butte Valley Museum and Historical Society goals are to recognize, preserve, display and interpret the history of
Butte Valley in East Siskiyou. Located in Dorris, this museum offers the history of the Tulelake Basin and Butte Valley homesteads, military veterans, the Modoc Indian War and the Tule Lake Internment Camps.

WW II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Tule Lake Unit

The East Siskiyou town of Tulelake played a role in the WWII era as it was home to Japanese American Tule Lake Segregation Center and Camp Tulelake, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed Japanese American internees. Later this location housed Italian and German Prisoners of War in the 1940s. Explore the grounds and learn about this history that is often left out of textbooks.

Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Established by President Roosevelt in 1908 as the nation’s first waterfowl refuge. The visitor center has a variety of exhibits, displays, brochures and wildlife-oriented programs. Refuge staff and volunteers are available to answer questions and help plan activities. Refuge wildlife is colorfully described by exhibits at the Visitor Center. Information regarding viewing opportunities, sightings, road conditions, and regulations is available.

Lava Beds National Monument

A uniquely natural and cultural site. Explore human history through Native American rock art and Modoc War sites, and the heritage of homesteaders, ranchers, cave explorers, “CCC boys,” and the modern Modoc and Klamath tribes. The monument is also known for scores of lava-tube caves and well-preserved young volcanic features. It lies on the flank of the Medicine Lake Volcano, which is the largest volcano by area in the Cascade Range.

NORTH

Siskiyou County Museum

Located in the county seat of Yreka, this museum educates on the history from pre-historic time to the earliest pioneer settlements. The Museum is an interpretive center for the history of the region and includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, programs, and a research library. There is machinery, early transportation vehicles, and both historic and recreated buildings on display.

Montague Railroad Depot Museum

The 1887 redwood building that was built in just five weeks as the town came to be, features many railroad and other artifacts from Montague and the Shasta Valley, including the station agent’s fully-furnished living quarters upstairs. The building served at the rail depot until the lines shut down in 1977 and was moved away from the tracks to its current location.

WEST

The People’s Center

The Cultural Center and Museum of the Karuk Tribe exhibits items representative of Karuk culture and history. Opened in Happy Camp in 2002, the Karuk People’s Center is a 5,000 square foot facility that includes an exhibition gallery, a gift shop, a Basketweaving classroom, a library, a collection’s storage area and the Karuk Language Program Office.

Fort Jones Museum

Fort Jones is the home of the self-proclaimed “biggest little museum” featuring a Shasta rain rock and an exterior of fossils, obsidian, and Native American stone tools. Be sure to take time to peruse the thousands of unique artifacts, photographs and geologic samples from the nearby area.

Etna Museum

The Museum of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eschscholtzia Parlor No. 112, is located in the first Town Hall of Etna, which also housed the fire department, library and jail, and was built to resemble Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This building was threatened by a fire when the Mason’s hall went ablaze next door in December 2023, but the Museum was saved along with all of the treasures inside.

SOUTH

Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum

The Weed Lumber Town Museum is a collection of artifacts and photographs of the people who founded and lived in Weed. Artifacts from the old lumber company store and from the company hospital are on display. Some rooms are decorated with original pieces to resemble a typical home from the early 1900s as well as a room dedicated to law enforcement with jail cell and booking area. Exhibits in the old courthouse feature the timber industry and life in early Weed and the life of Charlie Byrd, the first elected African American county sheriff in California.

Sisson Museum 

The Museum is located on ancestral lands of the Shasta and Wintu Tribes and stands today in a 1906 building on the grounds of the Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery. Established by Justin Sisson, one of the founding fathers of Mount Shasta. Permanent and changing exhibits display the history, culture, and geology of the Mount Shasta area.

Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Museum

Located in the former S.P.R.R. train and crew dispatchers’ office, the museum features much more than just railroad photographs and artifacts. Learn the story of Alexander Dunsmuir, a bit of town history, and check out the impressive Native American basket collection.

Heritage Junction Museum of McCloud

The Museum displays the logging and sawmill heritage of the town of McCloud and the surrounding area through artifacts, photographs and written materials.an impressive collection of artifacts from McCloud’s history, including the giant Corliss steam engine that powered the McCloud sawmill from 1903 until 1979. The museum also has a huge photographic collection covering the entire history of the town and its surrounding country.

Route Type: Out & Back

Directions: The Upper portion of the Sisson Callahan Trail can be accessed at the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead located on Forest Road 17. From Mt Shasta City, drive north on Interstate 5 through the town of Weed and exit at Edgewood/Stewart Springs Rd. Turn left, drive under the freeway, then right on Old Stage/Old 99. Turn left on to Stewart Springs Road, after 4 miles Forest Road 17 splits off to the right. Follow the road to the summit and then about a mile down the other side to Deadfall Meadows Trailhead.

Trail: For the first mile and a half, the SCT winds its way up through Deadfall Meadows crossing the creek multiple times, then crosses the PCT trail and heads up to the Upper Deadfall Lakes. Right after crossing the PCT, one can take a short side trip to Lower and Middle Deadfall Lakes. For mountain biking this section is about 60% riding and 40% hike a bike. The next mile and a half of the trail takes you up past both Upper Deadfall Lakes and arrives at a saddle and a junction to either hike to Mount Eddy or continue down the SCT. This section is about 50% ridable and 50% hike a bike. The total ascent is 1800 ft of climbing in just under 3 miles. On the descent, the trail switchbacks its way down to the North Fork of the Sacramento River which it then follows for most of the way down. This section offers multiple stream crossings, rock gardens, flowy single track, and beautiful meadow scenery. During the descent, the trail sometimes hits a forest service road. Stay on right on the roads and you will eventually see the trail to the left. After approximately 10 miles riders will come to a flat opening with the North Fork of the Sacramento River on the left and the main stem of the Sacramento River in front of them. Riders can then cross the river to the left and follow the road down to the North Shore of Lake Siskiyou making sure to stay right at intersections. Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Join Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) and The Field Writing Institute for a nature writing workshop celebrating Earth. Workshop leaders Evonne Ellis, MFA in Creative Writing, and MSBEC’s Community Education Coordinator, Kayla Marie, will guide us through writing prompts that will connect us with Gaia through presence, wonder, and heart. Directions

The Upper portion of the Sisson Callahan Trail can be accessed at the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead located on Forest Road 17. From Mt Shasta City, drive north on Interstate 5 through the town of Weed and exit at Edgewood/Stewart Springs Rd. Turn left, drive under the freeway, then right on Old Stage/Old 99. Turn left on to Stewart Springs Road, after 4 miles Forest Road 17 splits off to the right. Follow the road to the summit and then about a mile down the other side to Deadfall Meadows Trailhead.

Trail

For the first mile and a half, the SCT winds its way up through Deadfall Meadows crossing the creek multiple times, then crosses the PCT trail and heads up to the Upper Deadfall Lakes. Right after crossing the PCT, one can take a short side trip to Lower and Middle Deadfall Lakes. For mountain biking this section is about 60% riding and 40% hike a bike. The next mile and a half of the trail takes you up past both Upper Deadfall Lakes and arrives at a saddle and a junction to either hike to Mount Eddy or continue down the SCT. This section is about 50% ridable and 50% hike a bike. The total ascent is 1800 ft of climbing in just under 3 miles. On the descent, the trail switchbacks its way down to the North Fork of the Sacramento River which it then follows for most of the way down. This section offers multiple stream crossings, rock gardens, flowy single track, and beautiful meadow scenery. During the descent, the trail sometimes hits a forest service road. Stay on right on the roads and you will eventually see the trail to the left. After approximately 10 miles riders will come to a flat opening with the North Fork of the Sacramento River on the left and the main stem of the Sacramento River in front of them. Riders can then cross the river to the left and follow the road down to the North Shore of Lake Siskiyou making sure to stay right at intersections. Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.
