The pleasant, restive Cottage Studio with the heart of Mt. Shasta view has an Island Canopied Queen Bed; fluffy towels; custom tiled floors, shower and backsplashes; a private garden with a fire pit and original art. Our cozy BnB has a fully equipped self-serve kitchen with thoughtful amenities and smart design. Easy on/off I-5 to Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, McCloud or Mineral Springs activities.

THE SPACE

WHAT IS THE WELCOME LIKE?

There is a Welcome Board outside the cottage. We love to have special little surprises, to get the oohhs and aaahhhs! We like a 15 to 20 minute heads-up before your arrival. When you arrive we will take you on a tour of the cottage and gardens which are down the driveway OR we can make arrangements for you to let yourself in. You will park your car at the bottom of the driveway.

WHAT IS THE COTTAGE LIKE?
It is a studio apartment ( 16×20) that has custom porcelain tile and a water closet (toilet, hand washing sink), shower closet, sink/stove kitchen area, sitting area, clothes closet, washer and dryer (no extra charge), a work desk/table which also has a mirror and storage for a dressing table. a monitor heater and a sleeping “island” bed. It is in the city limits with a church parking lot on one side and a residential lot on the other. The Freeway is close which makes it easy to get on and off of. There is no air conditioning although there are fans and the ability to open windows at night for cool mountain air.

HOW MANY DOES THE COTTAGE SLEEP?
Inside the cottage, the queen platform bed comfortably sleeps 2. There is also a sofa sleeper and a chaise sleeper with sleeping bags in the upper cupboard for 2 more.
The Cottage is ideal for a small family, a couple or singles.

WHAT IS A SELF-SERVE BREAKFAST?
We provide eggs for your breakfasts. Our guests recognize the value of thoughtful amenities that allow you to cook and bake your own self-serve meals as the cottage has everything you need to cook and serve meals except lunch and dinner foods. There are spices, salt and pepper, oil, Bisquick/pancake mix, and sugar and butter. We also provide milk, coffee beans and fruit. Please let us know your preferences, any allergies or gluten or lactose intolerance.

WHAT IS THE WATER LIKE?
The cottage has an under counter water heater which provides hot water for a short shower. Hot water is instant and is set very hot. Start with cold water and add hot to get the right mix. The wash is cold water only. The drinking water is pure and good here. It comes right off the mountain streams and is bottled in our area.

HOW CLOSE IS THE FREEWAY?
The freeway is nearby. Once you close the cottage door and windows it can barely be heard as the cottage is well insulated. To us the freeway is a constant calming sound. It provides easy on and off to the various attractions of the area.

WHAT IS THE GARDEN LIKE?
Garden Gate Cottage nestles down our hill. It is calming, peaceful, private, pleasant and appealing to the senses. The outdoor garden has easy style with intimate areas for conversation, eating or just relaxing. In Winter the garden is dormant and the outdoor furniture is stored. There is a view of Mt Shasta from the Cottage garden. The Conversation Areas: The Fire Pit Area with seating. We set the fire pit with wood so all you have to do is strike the match. The outdoor furniture provides lounging, seating and conversation in season. The Eating Areas: A small table and chairs just outside the cottage door. A table and chairs in the Pergola. The Relaxing Areas: The Bubbling Fountain ( in season) with seating. The bench with a tin roof. Great for listening to rain.

WHAT ARE SUMMERS LIKE?
Summer days can be very warm with cooler evenings and night air. There are fans, but no air conditioning. Open windows at night for cool air, but close them during the day when it is warm out.

WHAT ARE WINTERS LIKE?
Winter months are November through February. Nights are colder than days. Usually the sun comes out and it warms a bit even in winter. There are only a couple of times a year that we have severe winter storms. We rarely have to put on chains, but we always carry chains as we live in the mountains. You should carry chains when you come to visit in the winter. The freeway is frequently plowed in case of snow and rarely gets completely closed down. Our road is a main street and regularly gets plowed during a snow. If snow is building up it is wise to park at the mouth of our driveway unless you have snow tires. We have a snow blower.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Expect to be cared for but not hovered over. Expect friendly folk. Expect vegetables and/or fruit from the garden during the growing season which is June to September or October.
Expect cool nights and warmer days (no air conditioning).
Expect changeable weather in the winter and options for winter sports.
Expect us to keep the garden watered.
Expect the gardener. The gardener is my 96-year old Dad who lives with us. He definitely has a ‘green thumb’ and loves to work the garden. You may see him or hear the scritch-scratch of his spade. He quietly goes about the garden in some area each day of the growing season; hoeing weeds, picking produce, tilling the soil or watering. He may not have his hearing aids in, but If you can engage him in conversation, he loves it.

GUEST ACCESS

These are the things You have access to…

…Wifi. The provider is slow and sometimes streaming movies is frustrating, but you can gain on-line access. The password is in the Welcome Book.

…A TV that swivels toward the bed or toward the sitting area. There is no Cable TV. There is the TV monitor for you to stream your own movies.

…The cottage garden directly in front of the cottage with firepit.

…A private parking space, outdoor pergola to the left of the cottage and outdoor stairway.

…Optionally you may Schedule an art lesson at Juliart School with Julie Grossman. There is oil, acrylic or water color painting, fused and slumped glass, stained glass, mosaics and sculpture.

…Off limits is the vacation rental on the lower level of the main house, the garage and sheds.

Interaction with guests

We love to interact with our guests. When you register and get your key we greet you and give you a tour of the Gardens and Garden Gate Cottage. We bring fruits, vegetables and flowers from our gardens in season. If you would like to use the fire pit we will have wood for you. Feel free to ask us questions or text for information during your stay. If you are interested we can suggest places to hike or visit. Someone is always present at the Main House or in the garden during your stay.

OTHER

There is a 10% city occupancy tax and a 2% Siskiyou County Tourism Improvement District(SCTID) assessment for stays under 30 days. You will pay this with cash or (Hidden by Airbnb) when you register and get your key at the main house. Over the bed and skylight is a curtain scarf, but if you want to sleep in, a face mask would be a good thing to bring. There is no air-conditioning, but there is a fan. At night you can open the windows with screens for cooler night air. During the day keep the windows closed to keep the cooler air in.

Pet-Friendly Family Vacations in Northern California: Your Ultimate Guide

Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows how quickly they become a part of the family. That’s why not taking them on vacation isn’t even considered by one out of three owners, according to a Forbes Advisor study.

April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

McCLOUD HOTEL

Situated at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta, the McCloud Hotel was built more than a century ago but offers modern-day amenities sure to please everyone, including the family pet. Dog treats are available at the front desk, and dog beds for any size canine can be provided as well.

A park across the street from the hotel is a beautiful place to walk your dog, or stroll amongst the shops in Historic Downtown McCloud, a nationally registered historic district with 17 buildings designated as landmarks. Leashed dogs are allowed on Gray Butte Trail, one of the only dog-friendly hiking trails at Mt. Shasta. When you’re ready to eat, head to the dog-friendly Axe and Rose Public House, a casual dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel.

RAILROAD PARK RESORT

Stay in one of the Railroad Park Resort’s caboose lodging units, complete with modern amenities, or rest your head in a vintage cabin, perfect for families or large groups. There are also 23 RV sites and 24 tent campsites throughout the property. Best of all, dogs are welcome, and there’s even a dog park area where your puppy can run off leash.

While staying at the resort, make sure to try your hand at fishing in the Sacramento River, bike around the historic town of Dunsmuir (where the resort is located) or head 2 miles away to hike the lower Castle Crags section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Dog Trail in the Castle Crags Wilderness Area offers spectacular views of the Castle Crags and other peaks, and as you might have guessed, dogs are welcome.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

While there, make sure to spend some time at the Dunsmuir Botanical Garden, which is adjacent to the resort. The 10-acre wooded area features a variety of native species, perennial plants and walking trails, ideal for hiking and viewing the natural beauty. Dogs are welcome.

HI-LO MOTEL, CAFÉ & RV PARK

All of the 41 rooms, four apartments and RV Park of the Hi-Lo Motel in Weed are dog-friendly (and cat-friendly, by the way). The family-owned-and-operated site features a café that serves homemade comfort food.

Among the sights to see in Weed are the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, a 136-acre art installation and war memorial located in the Klamath National Forest. Just northeast of Weed is Lake Shastina, where you can hike, fish, swim, camp and more while taking in a beautiful panoramic view of Mt. Shasta. The 1.2-mile loop hike around the lake is dog-friendly. The 4.9-mile Black Butte Trail, the largest of Mt. Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, welcomes canines as well.

WINEMA HISTORIC LODGE

Popular with hunters, bird-watchers and explorers, Winema Historic Lodge in Tulelake offers large-sized lodge rooms and motel rooms, and dogs are welcome. Perfect for families or large groups, Winema features RV parking with hook-ups, as well as on-site dining options.

Tulelake is home to the unique Lava Beds National Monument, which features more than 800 caves, Native American rock art sites, historic battle fields and more. Dogs are allowed in developed areas, but not on trails, or in caves or buildings.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the first in a series of national wildlife refuges to conserve wetlands, resulting in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Tulelake. Start your adventure at the new visitor center for a look at exhibits, displays and more. Dogs are permitted at the refuge.

One of the darkest times in U.S. history is memorialized at the Tule Lake National Monument. The monument includes the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a large facility where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, and Camp Tulelake, originally a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that was converted to an additional detention facility for Japanese Americans. Dogs are allowed, although not in buildings, including the visitor center.

HUNGRY AND THIRSTY

If you’re looking for a place to eat and drink that’s open to dogs as well, visit Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen in Mt. Shasta. Dogs are allowed in the outside seating area, so bring your furry friend and enjoy scrumptious goodies such as Duck Fat Fries, Savage Salad and a What the Puck sandwich. You can wash it down with a craft or bottled beer, of which the choices are plentiful, all while you enjoy Northern California’s beautiful weather.

Also in Mt. Shasta is the popular Yaks Shack, a bakery and café with outdoor seating only, so, of course, your dog is more than welcome. From coffee and pastries to barbecue and beer, Yaks is the place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or just stop in for a snack and a breather as you visit the town, enjoying the beautiful mountain, activities and sensational sights.

Adventurous couples might go snowshoeing at Mt Shasta Nordic Center or skate around the Siskiyou Ice Rink at Mt Shasta’s Shastice Park. Hit the Town

Historic Downtown McCloud

When the weather’s nice, a stroll through Downtown McCloud is the perfect way to spend your afternoon. McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Hedge Creek Falls

Nature lovers of all ages will appreciate the beauty of Hedge Creek Falls, and the best part? It’s a simple, short hike. Accessible via an easy trail, this hidden waterfall cascades into a cavern behind it, creating a unique and enchanting experience. The trailhead is conveniently located near the I-5 highway, making it an easy stop along your way into town. Castle Crags

Open year-round, this 170-million-year-old landmark is accessible from a few different points. Or, for a more challenging hike, you can follow Crags Trail, which takes you right to the base of the towering Castle Dome.

With such easy access to the Upper Sacramento River, you’d be missing out if you didn’t plan to spend an afternoon catching a fish or two for lunch. Head to Ted Fay Fly Shop to make sure you have everything you need — since 1950, this friendly, full-service destination shop has been providing downtown Dunsmuir with all its fishing needs. Once you’ve picked up all the fishing essentials, spend an afternoon trying to snag a Rainbow Trout, which swim in abundance through easily fishable areas of the Upper Sac River.

Shasta Star is located in the upstairs space of a historical building with a lovely crystal shop on the ground floor. You will access the space by stairs. When you open the door – you will fall in love with the views, the energy and peaceful feeling greeting you. Completely remodeled, new wood floors thru-out, paint, new countertops, whole new bathroom/shower/bath. New furniture, all new bedding, This home is GORGEOUS! Front bedroom has a queen bed with comfortable pillow top mattress. middle bedroom has a two sets of bunks with toys/games for kids. Tub with beach towels/toys if you go to Lake. Master suite has King bed, beautifully decorated – flat screen TV. Full Bath off the master. There is a queen sofa sleeper. 60″ Flat screen in living room. There is a dining room and breakfast table in kitchen. Kitchen is very well stocked with T-fal pots/pans, Keurig, regular coffee maker, crockpot, rice maker, wok, electric skillet and all glassware, bakeware, dishes and silverware you need. The entire home has wood floors and all new bedding and decor. Beautiful and has most fabulous views of surrounding views and of Mt Shasta from the rear deck. The kitchen is completely stocked with everything to make gourmet meals including all basic spices, some condiments and placemats. All towels and linens are new. Outside picnic table for outside dining on side garden patio. Included is basket for BBQ tools, tablecloth and outside dinnerware. There is a 60inch flat screen in living room with a Dish Network TV package and strong internet. There are doggie bowls and treats for your dogs. Please keep them off beds and furniture and clean up yard area. We have tried to make this home a clean, very comfortable space to enjoy your vacation. We sincerely hope you enjoy your stay. I grew up in Mt Shasta and would be happy to recommend places to go , dining options to general information. If you decide to purchase property here, I am Owner Broker of Century 21 here in town and also own and manage Mt Shasta Vacation Rentals. Guest access, the entire home and deck. Please enjoy the gardens and lawn but be remindful that there is a crystal shop at ground level and two small cottages in the rear of property. Access home in front stairs. Light will be on for you! I am available to help you in any way. The neighborhood, There is a fabulous deli-gourmet food market across the street! Get wines, yummy sandwiches, BBQ and much more. Walk to restaurants, shops and crystal shops. Getting around, you can walk everywhere!!!! Other things to note, Do not park on the public street if it snows or you know it will be snowing later in the night. The snowplows come thru and they may tow your car. You need to park in the back alley or in the public parking space at the corner.
