There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

• Greenhorn Park

  Stretching alongside five miles of both Yreka Creek and Greenhorn Creek, the Yreka Creek Greenway is both a great place for a stroll or bike ride, and serves the environment around it. Volunteers for the Greenway project are dedicated to restoring and maintaining the natural watersheds of Yreka and Greenhorn Creek, and as the Greenway expands, there are more and more opportunities to explore the trails surrounding these natural wonders.

The Denny Bar Company brick building is located in downtown Etna — and was originally built in 1880 by the Parker Campbell Company, which sold goods and merchandise to the miners and settlers of the 1880s. In 1892, the second story became the site of the first high school north of Red Bluff, California, with an enrollment of 15 students. The second floor was also later used for public lectures, concerts, entertainment, as well as rooms for rent.

Over the years, friends and family from urban and rural areas have spent time with me in Siskiyou County, and before writing this post, I took a very informal poll of my friends and asked:

What would have been helpful to know about Siskiyou County before planning your trip?

Below are the tips that came from my conversations:

Lodging

Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget and needs. For example, my mom loves staying at hotels in Siskiyou with a breakfast option. I enjoyed my experience at The McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Whereas one of my girlfriends, who lives in San Francisco, adored her long weekend at the Mt. Shasta Resort. It’s next to Lake Siskiyou, and she enjoyed being near the water.

PRO-TIP: When you narrow down your lodging options, don’t be afraid to call the property. Local employees can help you determine if their establishment is a good fit for your needs, and offer tips for things to see and do in the area.

Internet Access

Siskiyou County is geographically diverse and large; to give you a sense of scale it’s roughly the size of Massachusetts and 60% of the land area is public forest land.

Depending on what area of the county you’re visiting—and what activities you do—the Internet could be slow, spotty, or nonexistent. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it’s the perfect place to unplug from email, social media, and work projects.

PRO-TIP: Tell your work colleagues, friends, and family that you’ll have limited Internet access while in Siskiyou. Create an out of office notification for your inbox, too.

Cell phone reception

Cell phone reception is adequate along Highway 5 and in the central part of the county. However, in the far east and west parts of Siskiyou reception can be spotty.

PRO-TIP: Buy a paper map of the area. If you need a cell phone connection in the great outdoors, consider looking into satellite options.

Driving conditions

No matter what time of year you visit Siskiyou, stay abreast of driving conditions. In the winter, you’ll experience rain, snow, and wind in various parts of the county, so carry chains in your car. During the summer season, you might encounter smoke from wildfires, and just like winter, it’s essential to stay updated on road conditions.

PRO-TIP: The California Department of Transportation keeps their website updated with travel alerts. Before you embark on a road trip, check the site for updates.

Quirks of small-town life

Most small towns have unique quirks, and that’s what makes them fun. It also means business may or may not be open when you expect. For example, you won’t find much open after 9 pm in most towns in Siskiyou.

PRO-TIP: If a store, coffee shop, or restaurant is closed, use the opportunity to explore what’s nearby or ask a local for recommendations. I’ve done this in large cities like Paris, France and Portland, Oregon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Farm to Table

Siskiyou County is a rural region, so compared to large cities, there are aren’t as many dining choices. However, it is a rich agricultural area and you will find unique and delicious dining options in Siskiyou that source local food. For example, I love eating dinner at Denny Bar Co. in Etna. Also, Café Maddalena in Dunsmuir uses local ingredients, offers a seasonal menu, and daily specials. And don’t forget to check out California Heritage Farms! They have a U-pick berry patch with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers that’s open from June to October seven days a week.

If you’re in need of a snack or coffee or both, check out Zephyr Books & Coffee in Yreka. Zephyr serves Northbound Coffee—that’s roasted in Mt. Shasta—plus homemade scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more.

PRO-TIP: Make reservations, and look for unique farm-to-table dining opportunities in Siskiyou. Also, use Google Maps to locate restaurants, ask locals for tips, and your hotel for restaurant recommendations.

Enjoy the Outdoors

With stunning views of Mount Shasta rising up in front of you almost everywhere you go, you’ll be left breathless — hopefully, though, that’s because of the amazing scenery, and not because you’ve been hiking too long. Remember to drink water, folks.

Bel-Air Park

Head to this park just next to the College of the Siskiyous and explore 7 acres worth of beautiful open space. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and for the competitive types, there are bocce ball and horseshoe courts.

Pluto’s Cave

Explore an ancient lava tube on this fairly easy out-and-back hike into Pluto’s Cave. This centuries-old cave was formed by lava erosion, and as a result, the rock formations you can explore are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Bear Trail

Circling the perimeter of the College of the Siskiyous, this 2.1-mile trail is a great way to soak in some views of Mount Shasta while surrounded by sweeping forest.

Exploring Local Culture, History and Recreation

Weed might be small — but its cultural scene is mighty. Along the historic downtown, you’ll find plenty to explore, whether you’re interested in discovering some local history or you’re just looking to unwind over a few rounds of golf.

Cedar Lanes Bowling Alley

This locally-owned spot for bowling, food and drinks is the perfect way to spend an evening relaxing after exploring the outdoors. Chat with some locals while you’re here — this is a favorite spot for those who live nearby and you’re sure to find some great conversation with this town’s thriving, colorful community.

Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum

Before it was the charming town we know and love today, Weed was founded as a lumber milling town by Abner Weed — and though a name change has been proposed a few times throughout the town’s history, the locals would have none of it. Head to the Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum to learn the fascinating history of Weed, and all the incredible people who made it what it is today.

Weed Golf Club & Lake Shastina Golf Resort

Once the weather starts to warm up, there are few better ways to spend an afternoon than wandering a golf course surrounded by stunning mountain views. Both Weed Golf Club and the Lake Shastina Golf Resort are excellent places to do that, with both offering expansive, beautifully maintained courses and clubhouses where you can enjoy lunch and a beverage.

Living Memorial Sculpture Garden

This 136-acre art installation created in 1988 honors the brave sacrifices of those who have lost their lives in war. The trees stand as a living tribute to those who have died, while the sculpture garden provides a serene place for visitors to reflect and marvel at the beauty and artistry that has gone into creating this work of art.

Year-Round Events

No matter what time of year you visit, there’s sure to be some kind of community event to attend. From street markets to car shows — and, yes, even a 4/20 celebration — you’ll find local producers, food trucks, live music and more. 

La Florista Dispensary

For those who are inclined, you can, of course, purchase cannabis while you’re in Weed. La Florista, on Main Street, offers a relaxed, clean and friendly environment to browse cannabis products and accessories. Once you have made your purchase, you can also head into the Lounge, where you are welcome to enjoy your purchases while playing a round of pool, indulging in snacks and more.

The Best Bites Around

After a day of wandering the town or exploring the beautiful outdoor scenery of Siskiyou, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite. Luckily, Weed has you covered with a wide array of satisfying bites, refreshing drinks and the pairing of the two.

Mt. Shasta Brewing Co.

Named aptly for its place right at the base of Mount Shasta, Mount Shasta Brewing Co prides itself on its dedication to creating high-quality craft microbrews. They utilize water sourced straight from Mount Shasta, giving their beers a uniquely pure and clean taste.

Hi-Lo Cafe

For a classic diner meal, look no further than Hi-Lo Cafe, a retro-style diner that has been serving up comforting American fare since 1951. Enjoy fresh-baked pies made daily, breakfast served all day and much more.

Ellie’s Espresso & Bakery

No vacation is complete without a stop at a local coffee shop. Ellie’s is a great stop for a quick caffeine boost at any time of the day, and you can grab a sweet treat while you’re at it too.

There’s plenty to do in Mount Shasta

The beauty of Siskiyou, California’s northernmost region, is a sight to behold any time of the year. Visiting Mount Shasta, the second-highest peak in the Cascades, makes your trip to Siskiyou even better given the wide variety of activities available around the mountain, not to mention its spectacular view.

If you plan a vacation during the winter, you’ll find plenty of spots to ice skate, ski, snowboard and ice fish, just to name a few ideas. The magic of spring brings flowers of every color and an abundance of ways to explore Mount Shasta, such as on foot, by car or with the assistance of a tour guide.

Summertime means getting in and on the water, including Lake Siskiyou. The lake, located at the foot of Mount Shasta, offers plenty of trails that are ideal for sightseeing, as well as excellent conditions for boating, swimming, paddling and all sorts of water sports. And the yellow, orange, rose and burgundy colors of the trees in autumn, especially with a backdrop of Mount Shasta, provide a spectacular vision you’ll never forget. Whether you enjoy the view by hiking, biking or simply strolling around, the sights are breathtaking.

Here are a few ideas for your first (or return) trip to majestic Mount Shasta and Siskiyou, the crown jewel of northern California.

LAKE SISKIYOU

Located about 2 miles from Mount Shasta is Lake Siskiyou, which offers plenty of shoreline and a trail around the lake with several access points for boaters, swimmers and others year-round.

Whether you like to camp, glamp or something in between, there are plenty of opportunities. Located right on the lake is Lake Siskiyou Resort Camp, a beautiful getaway surrounded by tall Douglas firs, pines and cedar trees. From tent camping to spacious houses, there’s a lodging choice that’s perfect for you. Kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, walking the 6.5-mile long trail around the lake and more is available to you. During the summer, a waterpark of large inflatables is pure fun for all ages. Make sure to bring a blanket no matter what time of year you arrive, because when the sun goes down, the stars come out like you’ve never seen before.

MOUNT SHASTA RESORT

If your idea of camping is staying at a highly rated all-season resort, then Mount Shasta Resort is for you. Nestled in a forest that overlooks Lake Siskiyou, the private chalets at the resort offer all the comfort of home plus activities like golfing on an 18-hole golf course, horseback riding, skiing, relaxing at a day spa and dining in an exceptional resort restaurant with views of the mountain.

MOUNT SHASTA CITY PARK

The 26-acre Mount Shasta City Park, located 1 mile north of downtown Mount Shasta, is the site for numerous public events throughout the year. With four scenic picnic areas, a gazebo, a playground and other amenities, this area is perfect for a relaxing day with the family. You can spend the day unwinding, or explore a nature trail that winds through the trees and meadow as well as a trail that leads to the beautiful Headwaters Spring,

A HIKER’S PARADISE

The Siskiyou area is known for its outdoor recreational activities, and hiking is at the top of most adventurer’s list.

You’ll find beautiful alpine meadows and spectacular views along the Clear Creek Trail, a 5.7-mile route that leads to a popular spot where a view of Mud Creek Falls is possible. Although the view is from a mile away, the falls are so massive, their beauty can still be seen from that distance. For those who want a closer view, there is a cross-country route from the end of the trail.

For a shorter, yet beautiful journey, Heart Lake Trail is a 2-mile moderate trail that leads to a bench on top of Castle Lake. Above Castle Lake is Heart Lake, surrounded by rocky cliffs. What makes this trail even more incredible is the view of Mount Shasta from the lake. On a clear, calm day, the sight of the mountains reflected in the lake will have you in awe. Bunny Flat Trail is another popular and fairly easy journey when the weather is warm, and a perfect location for snowshoeing in the winter. The road is the main access point for all winter activities, so the road to Bunny Flat is always plowed.

Sisson Meadow is a popular spot for visitors to take in the views and nature of this wetland. The 7.5-acre area offers plenty of wildlife and plants, as well as places to sit and public installation art. Views of Mount Shasta, Mount Eddy, Black Butte and Castle Spire are possible from this location.

Gateway Trail offers visitors access to the forest directly from the town. Only a mile or so ahead of Mount Shasta High School, this shared-use trail is popular with bikers, hikers and even equestrians, providing trail explorers of all kinds with nearly 10 miles of paths to discover.

CHECK IT OUT!

Celebrating its 40^th anniversary in 2023, the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum offers a look at the past, present and future of the Mount Shasta region. Exhibits showcasing the history and science related to Mount Shasta and the surrounding areas have been seen by more than 500,000 visitors. The museum shares the property with the oldest fish hatchery in operation west of the Mississippi River. The hatchery opened in 1888.

From November through April, have fun on the Shastice Park outdoor ice rink. The park, located in the northeastern part of Mount Shasta, is perfect for getting your steps in, and dogs are allowed as well. Then head to Snowman’s Hill for a thrilling sledding adventure. Located between Interstate 5 and McCloud, the hill is at the high point of the roadway. For more winter fun, visit the Mount Shasta Nordic Center, a nonprofit organization that provides groomed cross-country ski trails, a snowshoe trail as well as a warming hut, ski rentals, lessons and more.

Siskiyou is home to numerous food and drink establishments, most of them independent and some family-owned. Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, located in Mount Shasta, offers a variety of comfort food and seasonal dishes, as well as craft beer and wine. Yaks on the 5 in Mount Shasta offers mouthwatering gourmet burgers, salads and microbrews, and don’t leave without trying a house-roasted coffee or handcrafted pastry. There are a variety of restaurants throughout the area, so make sure to try a few.

Mount Shasta is not just another pretty place. It’s also known for its healing arts – it is a sister mountain to Mount Fuji in Japan after all. Crystals play an important part of Mount Shasta’s allure, and there are numerous shops that offer them. According to local spiritual guides, it’s important to cleanse your crystal to clear away all the energy of the many hands that touched it. Hedge Creek Falls, which is a short drive away in Dunsmuir, and Sacramento Headwaters are among the locations with healing properties.

PLAN A GETAWAY

There’s so much to see and do in Siskiyou throughout the year; we’ve only scratched the surface in this blog. Make plans to visit for a few days, a week or longer to really understand why this region is so loved. There are a variety of lodging choices, including bed-and-breakfasts, inns, cabins and hotels, such as the new Summit Lofts Boutique Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Mount Shasta and close to everything in this unique town.

Hit the Town

Although it is small, McCloud packs a big punch. There’s plenty to explore in this hidden gem of the Mt. Shasta area, from locally owned shops to restaurants offering the best of Siskiyou’s cuisine.

Historic Downtown McCloud

When the weather’s nice, a stroll through Downtown McCloud is the perfect way to spend your afternoon. This downtown is a registered historical district, and includes seventeen different buildings designated as landmarks themselves. As you stroll, you’ll find unique gifts, apparel, outdoor gear, fine wines, antiques and homemade treats, all offered to you by friendly shopkeepers who love to learn about visitors.

Heritage Junction Museum

Whether you’re hiking or biking, you’ll find local flora, animals and stunning views. Dogs are also welcome on the trails, as long as they are leashed.

McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Legends and Lore

(1) Many think these are Lemurians, ancient beings of a lost continent that have taken refuge within the mountain. Perhaps it was a sighting Bigfoot or Sasquatch, an ape-like giant creature that has been known to roam and live in this area. Over the years, friends and family from urban and rural areas have spent time with me in Siskiyou County, and before writing this post, I took a very informal poll of my friends and asked:

What would have been helpful to know about Siskiyou County before planning your trip?

Below are the tips that came from my conversations:

Lodging

Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget and needs. For example, my mom loves staying at hotels in Siskiyou with a breakfast option. I enjoyed my experience at The McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Whereas one of my girlfriends, who lives in San Francisco, adored her long weekend at the Mt. Shasta Resort. It’s next to Lake Siskiyou, and she enjoyed being near the water.

PRO-TIP: When you narrow down your lodging options, don’t be afraid to call the property. Local employees can help you determine if their establishment is a good fit for your needs, and offer tips for things to see and do in the area.

Internet Access

Siskiyou County is geographically diverse and large; to give you a sense of scale it’s roughly the size of Massachusetts and 60% of the land area is public forest land.

Depending on what area of the county you’re visiting—and what activities you do—the Internet could be slow, spotty, or nonexistent. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it’s the perfect place to unplug from email, social media, and work projects.

PRO-TIP: Tell your work colleagues, friends, and family that you’ll have limited Internet access while in Siskiyou. Create an out of office notification for your inbox, too.

Cell phone reception

Cell phone reception is adequate along Highway 5 and in the central part of the county. However, in the far east and west parts of Siskiyou reception can be spotty.

PRO-TIP: Buy a paper map of the area. If you need a cell phone connection in the great outdoors, consider looking into satellite options.

Driving conditions

No matter what time of year you visit Siskiyou, stay abreast of driving conditions. In the winter, you’ll experience rain, snow, and wind in various parts of the county, so carry chains in your car. During the summer season, you might encounter smoke from wildfires, and just like winter, it’s essential to stay updated on road conditions.

PRO-TIP: The California Department of Transportation keeps their website updated with travel alerts. Before you embark on a road trip, check the site for updates.

Quirks of small-town life

Most small towns have unique quirks, and that’s what makes them fun. It also means business may or may not be open when you expect. For example, you won’t find much open after 9 pm in most towns in Siskiyou.

PRO-TIP: If a store, coffee shop, or restaurant is closed, use the opportunity to explore what’s nearby or ask a local for recommendations. I’ve done this in large cities like Paris, France and Portland, Oregon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Farm to Table

Siskiyou County is a rural region, so compared to large cities, there are aren’t as many dining choices. However, it is a rich agricultural area and you will find unique and delicious dining options in Siskiyou that source local food. For example, I love eating dinner at Denny Bar Co. in Etna. Also, Café Maddalena in Dunsmuir uses local ingredients, offers a seasonal menu, and daily specials. And don’t forget to check out California Heritage Farms! They have a U-pick berry patch with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers that’s open from June to October seven days a week.

If you’re in need of a snack or coffee or both, check out Zephyr Books & Coffee in Yreka. Zephyr serves Northbound Coffee—that’s roasted in Mt. Shasta—plus homemade scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more.

PRO-TIP: Make reservations, and look for unique farm-to-table dining opportunities in Siskiyou. Also, use Google Maps to locate restaurants, ask locals for tips, and your hotel for restaurant recommendations.

idance is a studio in downtown Fort Jones that hosts a variety of youth and adult dance and fitness classes. Visitors are welcome to come join a class for Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Hip Hop, Stretching and more. Check the online class schedule as it changes seasonally, they feature Aerial Silks, Tumbling, Yoga and other classes throughout the year. Drop-in rate is $12.

Stoneway Athletics

This gym is all about community, friendship and respect. With a foundation in traditional CrossFit training, they teach basic to advanced classes in functional exercise, athletic conditioning, plyometrics, kettle bell training, Olympic weightlifting, medicine ball and dumbbell training, power-lifting, gymnastics, rowing, running and jumping rope. Open to athletes of all fitness levels, this gym is a local’s favorite! Drop- ins please contact Stoneway Athletics in advance to schedule your visit.

Siskiyou Family YMCA

The local YMCA Center in Yreka offers a variety of fitness opportunities and classes that promote healthy living and overall health and wellness. They host over 25 weekly fitness classes that are designed for a wide variety of health seekers. Whether you are into Yoga, Spin, HIIT, TRX, Bootcamp, *PiYo or *WARRIOR classes, they have qualified fitness instructors and programs to help you stick to your fitness goals. A full gym on site, specialized clinics, tournaments and leagues that would be a fun addition to an active vacation! $8 Drop-In Fee for Non-Members and Fitness Punch Cards are available (10 Visits @ $72.00)

Rough & Ready Fitness

Rough and Ready Fitness, new to Etna in 2024, is a cutting-edge gym offering weights, cardio machines, and tanning in a clean and welcoming environment in the heart of Scott Valley. Door codes offer 24/7 access, and drop-in passes are just $10.

LevelUp

Level up is Yreka’s premiere group fitness studio. Classes include BODYPUMP, Vinyasa Yoga, Pilates, Mini Yogis, Kids Yoga, 30-Minute-High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), 60 Minute HIIT Mash Up, Latin/Hip-Hop Dance, Little Movers, Gentle Fitness, and Wing Chun Kung Fu. Black Bart’s Hideout

Black Bart, the infamous gentleman bandit of the Old West, is believed to have used a hidden cave behind Hedge Creek Falls in Dunsmuir, as one of his hideouts during his stagecoach-robbing spree in the 1880s. Nestled off I-5, this secluded spot along the Siskiyou Trail offered Bart both concealment and access to fresh water, allowing him to maintain his famously clean and refined appearance. Known for his polite demeanor and poetic notes left at crime scenes, Bart robbed Wells Fargo stagecoaches across Northern California and Southern Oregon, with several heists concentrated in Siskiyou County. His hideout beneath the waterfall remains a point of intrigue and local legend, drawing visitors curious about the outlaw who vanished mysteriously after serving time in San Quentin. You can visit this waterfall still today!

Lemurians

The Lemurians are mythical beings said to originate from the lost continent of Lemuria, a fabled land believed by some to have sunk beneath the Pacific Ocean. According to legend, survivors of this ancient, spiritually advanced civilization took refuge deep within Mount Shasta. These beings are often described as tall, wise, and peaceful, living in a hidden city called Telos beneath the mountain. The myth gained popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and many still believe that the region is a spiritual wonderland. Mount Shasta has since become a focal point for spiritual seekers and New Age believers, who view it as a portal to higher realms and a sanctuary for the Lemurians, whose presence is said to be felt through mysterious lights, strange encounters, and an aura of mystical energy surrounding the mountain. Spiritual Retreats and Sacred Places are popular destinations for visitors looking for an energetic experience.

Sasquatch

Siskiyou is considered one of the most active regions for Sasquatch sightings in the United States, earning it a reputation as the heart of Bigfoot country. With reports dating back to at least 1850, the area—particularly the Marble Mountains, Mount Shasta, and the Klamath River corridor—has been a hotspot for alleged encounters. One notable account involves three brothers who, during a 2010 expedition west of Yreka, reported hearing strange, deep vocalizations and later found signs suggesting the presence of a large, elusive creature. Researchers like David Paulides have documented dozens of sightings in the region, emphasizing its rich history of Bigfoot lore and the belief among some locals that these creatures may even winter in the area’s remote cave systems.

Coyote Steals Fire

The Karuk tribe, whose name means “upriver people,” have a rich tradition of oral storytelling that reflects their deep connection to the Klamath River and surrounding lands in northwestern California. Their legends often feature Coyote, a central figure in many Native American mythologies, who is portrayed as both a trickster and a cultural hero. In one well-known Karuk myth, Coyote Steals Fire, Coyote cunningly brings fire to humanity, a tale that explains the origin of fire and emphasizes themes of cleverness and sacrifice. Other stories include the Acoru Maidens, who represent natural elements and seasonal cycles, and tales of spirit journeys, where characters travel to the spirit world to gain wisdom or restore balance. These narratives are not just entertainment—they serve as moral lessons, cultural preservation, and spiritual guidance, passed down through generations in the Karuk language

Llao and Skell

The legend of Llao and Skell is a powerful tale from Klamath Native American mythology that explains the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Llao, the god of the underworld, lived beneath Mount Mazama (now Crater Lake), while Skell, the god of the sky, resided above Mount Shasta. When Llao fell in love with a mortal woman and was rejected, he erupted in fury, bringing destruction to the land. In response, Skell descended to protect the people, and the two deities engaged in a cataclysmic battle. Their war was so intense that it shattered Mount Mazama, forming Crater Lake. In the end, Skell triumphed, casting Llao back into the depths and sealing his domain with water. The lake and its central island, Wizard Island, are said to be the remnants of Llao’s defeat, symbolizing the eternal balance between darkness and light. The Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway that passes trhough Siskiyou on its way to Crater Lake.

Lost Humbug Creek Gold Mine

One of the most enduring lost treasure legends in Siskiyou is that of the Lost Humbug Creek Gold Mine. In the 1850s, during the height of the California Gold Rush, a miner traveling through the Humbug Creek area reportedly stumbled upon a rich vein of gold-bearing quartz while resting under a tree. He managed to collect a sack full of gold and brought it to his family in Hawkinsville, telling them of his accidental discovery. Tragically, when he returned to retrieve more, he fell ill and died before he could relocate the site. Despite numerous attempts by his family and later treasure hunters, the exact location of the mine was never found again. This tale, combined with the area’s documented gold production and the mysterious naming of “Humbug” by disillusioned miners, has kept the legend alive, drawing modern-day prospectors and curious adventurers to the region in hopes of striking it rich.

Mill Creek’s Missing Gold

The legend of Mill Creek’s Missing Gold is one of Siskiyou County’s most tantalizing tales of lost treasure. According to local lore, during the height of the California Gold Rush, a group of miners traveling through the Mill Creek area were ambushed by bandits. In a desperate attempt to protect their hard-earned fortune, the miners buried a large cache of gold somewhere near the creek before fleeing or being captured. Though some of the miners may have survived, none ever returned to reclaim the treasure—perhaps due to death, imprisonment, or simply being unable to relocate the exact spot. Over the decades, treasure hunters have scoured the area, drawn by whispers of the hidden hoard, but the gold has never been found. The story persists, fueled by the rugged terrain, the creek’s shifting course, and the enduring hope that the treasure still lies buried beneath the soil, waiting to be discovered.

Yreka Gold Heist

The Yreka Gold Heist is one of the most dramatic and mysterious crimes in Siskiyou’s modern history. On the morning of February 1, 2012, courthouse staff discovered that a significant portion of the county’s historic gold display—featuring nuggets and artifacts collected since the 1850s—had been stolen from the Siskiyou County Courthouse in Yreka. The thieves had broken in through a bathroom window and smashed a hole in the display case, grabbing what they could reach. Although both men were eventually caught and served prison time, the bulk of the stolen gold—valued at over $1.2 million—was never recovered and sparks conspiracy and speculation among locals to this day.

• Monitor incident maps, including live lookout cameras from ALERT California.

• Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services provides emergency event information as well as evacuation statuses.
• Follow the Klamath National Forest and Shasta-Trinity National Forest on Facebook before your trip so you are more likely to be in the know of any risk or closures.

Have a Backup Plan

Be flexible with your plans and research alternative lodging options in the event that fire or smoke alter your experience. For example, If you are planning to camp at Kangaroo Lake, and there is fire danger or smoke nearby, possibly alter your plans to stay at Castle Lake, or select a location like Lake Siskiyou to be closer to town and services. Episode Transcript – Siskiyou’s Dark Skies:

(00:04):
There’s no shortage of amazing things to do and see in Siskiyou. In fact, it’s usually a pretty difficult task to pare down the list of activities we choose to feature in these episodes. But one gem that I feel often eludes even the most experienced traveler is stargazing. Not just a quick glance, but true stargazing taking the time to really observe the night sky. These glimpses into the infinite void. These moments of unintended time-travel truly let us know where we stand in the universe.

(00:37):
Most widely recognized nighttime view is that of our Milky Way’s galactic center, the glowing dense, massive stars crossed by wispy ethereal arms. Most of us are probably only familiar with this view from our Instagram feeds, but each summer in Siskiyou, all you have to do is look up. Seeing millions of stars feels special, but it feels even more special when you realize that 99% of people in the U S and Europe can’t experience a natural nighttime sky. This was according to a 2016 study called the World Atlas of Artificial Night Sky Brightness. Today’s city lights, residential fixtures, and even car headlights all contribute to light pollution. The form of light pollution that affects most of our nighttime views is “sky glow” or the brightening of the sky over built areas. It’s that nighttime orang-y haze just above the horizon that city dwellers and suburbanites are familiar with. In the aforementioned study, with a link in the show notes, found that 80% of the world’s population is affected.

(01:37):
My nieces and nephews came up here and, you know, we had that little moment in between where the sun’s setting and the stars haven’t fully come out yet. And they’re like, Oh, it’s so dark here. It’s so dark. Turn on the lights! Just wait, because as soon as the stars like really come out and the moon, we’re not going to need the porch light. And just seeing their awe of that, they were just blown away when we finally turned everything off and let the fire die down and they got to look up and they were just amazed. They hadn’t ever seen that many stars before.

(02:07):
That’s Angela Sutton lead interpretive ranger at Lava Beds National Monument in Tulelake, one of the parts of Siskiyou County that’s so dark, so free from sky glow and other light pollution that it is currently being considered by the International Dark Sky Association as a “Dark Sky Place.”

So broadly speaking, there’s two categories or kind of philosophies behind our Dark Sky Places. We have our conservation certifications, which would be international Dark Sky Parks, International Dark Sky Reserves and International Dark Sky Sanctuaries. And these are protected lands where there’s extremely good sky quality and these places also take effort to enact policies which protect their future skies for generations to come. But then also..

That’s Adam Dalton, the Dark Sky Places Program Manager at the International Dark Association.

(03:01):
While that job title does not sound real, I assure you, it is undoubtedly real. Um, my job at IDA essentially is to run and manage the organization’s flagship conservation program, which is our International Dark Sky Places program.

(03:16):
The Lava Beds National Monument is a vast park located in the northeastern corner of Siskiyou County. And it’s about to join just a handful of National Parks that have received the honor of being designated as a Dark Sky Place. Pat Seiser, a physical scientist in cave resources lead at the park has been working with the Dark Sky Association to get a Dark Sky Place designation.

(03:38):
And the idea is that as we’ve become more and more urbanized across the world, um, we’re losing the ability to see our stars. There was a decision made that we needed to recognize and protect our night skies.

(03:52):
Some of the steps they’ve been taking at the Lava Beds National Monument have been to swap fixtures in bulbs for more downward-facing warmer lighting. The park staff and visitors have already noticed an improvement and to paraphrase Adam, unlike other forms of pollution we’re most familiar with, restoring the night sky happens literally at the speed of light. What’s more, the benefits of these changes extend far beyond an improved view for astronomers.

(04:18):
The International Dark Sky Association was founded in 1988, as a joint venture between a professional and an amateur astronomer, Dave Crawford and Tim Hunter, both of Tucson, Arizona, which is where our organization is currently headquartered. And it was originally focused more on astronomy, but as our organization has grown and evolved, it’s also began to focus on other things such as ecology, human health, certification of lighting, educational programming, and it’s become much more multi-faceted over time.

(04:52):
Light pollution affects quite a lot of things, and these days, it’s difficult to find parts of the world untouched by this little-known pollutant. Luckily, there are parts of the world where you can still see the sky for all it has to offer. And Siskiyou is one of those places.

(05:07):
It is really hard. Um, realistically speaking, if you’re looking to go somewhere that completely lacks the built environment, you’re going to go to some of the most remote sites. If you’re speaking about like the continental US. Now, if you’re in Alaska, it might be a little bit easier. But if you’re talking about most of the continental US, it’s very hard. And if you’re talking about some of the more densely populated States, it’s nearly impossible. I mean the most recent estimates place that 80% of people cannot see the Milky Way from where they live. And I would doubt that that’s currently the case, that study that was released that was a little bit, it was released a few years ago. So I guess that probably upwards of 80% of people in North America could not see the Milky Way from where they live. If you look at light pollution’s progression over the past, really 60, 70 years, you can see a remarkable trend where there’s vast reserves of darkness throughout the US and great clear starry skies.

(06:05):
But you can see as time advances and basically urbanization occurs, people move to cities. And, even with suburbanization, the spreading out of cities, the light pollution impacts both to the cities, as well as the urban and rural areas surrounding them has become increasingly significant. You can actually have light pollution on a clear night travel all the way from Las Vegas to remote areas of Death Valley. Um, we’re talking hundreds of miles. So this is something that while urban centers are releasing light pollution, their impacts can be felt in areas that are considerably farther away. If you’re looking at, artificial lighting at night and its usage, it ties into so many different things. Lighting impacts ecology and it serves as a deterrent to some species while serving as an attractive element to other species.

(07:01):
And furthermore, it also can encourage plant and growth in seasons or times of the year where it’s not appropriate. And then additionally, I mean, you also have human health impacts on everything from glare directly impacting us to, uh, with the use of brighter blue LED technology, potential effects on Circadian rhythm cycle of humans and sleep issues, which is why you hear not to use your phone or computer right before bed. Those kinds of lighting signatures are making their way into both indoor and outdoor lighting. So it really impacts so many things from sky glow to ecology, to human health. And then broadly speaking, you can also look at tradition and cultural heritage of so many experiences in the night sky throughout the world and the associated lore with the night sky and being able to even just experience that as being lost throughout the generations.

(07:55):
So there’s so many issues that this indirectly touches on. If you’re looking at a light pollution map from various satellite sources of Siskiyou County, I mean, you can see that there are sites, especially along interstate five that are more light-polluted. However, if you go further west or further east, especially into the protected landscapes as I said the Klamath National Forest, but then even additionally Lava Beds National Monument, you have sites that are almost what we consider to be completely “a natural night sky.” While that’s hard to necessarily quantify this, if you’re at one of these sites, it means that you could see essentially the same night sky that humans have looked up to for millennia before the invention of artificial light at night. So you’ll be seeing some incredible phenomenon. You’ll be able to clearly see the Milky Way from horizon to horizon if it’s the right season. And you’ll be able to experience the night sky in a way that most people frankly, are not able to. So I think that, uh, just the development patterns, the county being a lower population, being fairly large and also having large amounts of public lands that aren’t really built upon, gives an opportunity for county residents, as well as people visiting the county to experience quite an exceptional night sky.

(09:22):
The Park is an amazing place. All our National Parks were created because they’re our national treasure. We don’t have the amazing castles, the extraordinary long history of artwork that Europe has. And when our forefathers who created the National Park Service looked around and said listen, the most valuable treasure we have is our natural areas and they created the national park system to protect those resources. Here at Lava Beds, there’s lots of stuff you can do during the daytime. You can go caving. You can actually go caving at night because caves are dark naturally. So there’s not a whole lot of difference. But the one thing about coming out to the park and seeing the night skies is you also see the wildlife that’s out there at night. So as I mentioned earlier, that when you go walk along the road of Cave Loop, you can see the bats that are in in our caves, the maternity wards

(10:24):
when the bats are flying at night, they’ll come out and fly across the road and you can see them silhouetted across the night sky. And there’s various other animals out there that you may not be aware of that use the environment. And it’s just, it’s a whole different world to see there. It’s like seeing the Park twice – once with all the lights on and once with all the lights off. You’re on the mountain top, the mountain ridge and so we have quite the view. We can see during the day you can see Mount Shasta, and so we’ve got quite a range that we can see out. We can see out across the Tule Lake Wildlife Refuge, we look out across the Modoc National Forest. And so we’re basically one of the highest points in the region, and so we can see all the stars. We see the moon. The Milky Way is phenomenal. It’s, it’s just, it’s beautiful. It’s breathtaking.

(11:24):
Lava Beds National Monument is a very popular destination for amateur astronomers. The Park typically hosts an annual stargazing astronomy night, each August, and although it won’t be happening this year, the park is still inviting responsible visitors to come experience what the Siskiyou night sky has to offer.

(11:41):
Some of our amateur astronomers they’ve got much larger telescopes that they can’t pack around and they need to be near their vehicles, so lots of times I’ll use several of our overlooks. There’s one just before you get to the visitor center, it’s called our Bunch Grass overlook.

(11:54):
It’s at the start of a trail, but that parking area puts you where you’re far enough away from the visitor center so you’re not getting any of, any of the light coming off of the building. You’ve got the whole basin stretched out in front of you, Sconchin Butte stretched out in front of you. You get a nice sunset view from there too. So a lot of them will pull into that overlook cause it’s still, you know, almost as high, um, or probably is just as high as being at the visitor center area, but you get away from any of the light. And then when we do our annual or semi-annual event, we just use the parking lot at the visitor center, since all the lights are already down-facing, and we turn off a few others that are even, you know, still don’t put off much light, but they’ll just set up in the parking lot. You’re nice and high, and you’ve got this amazing view and our starting amateur astronomers, really like it because they got telescopes that they essentially haul around on trailers because they’re so large and this gives them the opportunity to just roll it off the trailer and they can start viewing and they don’t have to, you know, be far away from their stuff. And it works out really well.

(13:04):
One of the most magical astronomical events you can witness with the naked eye is a meteor shower, a stream of material burning up as it enters earth atmosphere. These showers are named after the area of the sky where the meteors originate. The Perseids emanate from Perseus, Orionids from the constellation of Orion, and so on. The first of these, the Perseids will peak around August 11th through the 12th of this year. And if you’ve got the dedication, the Orionids are known to put on a dazzling display of up to 20 meteors per hour, especially in the hours just before dawn. These cosmic fireworks are viewable on October 21st and 22nd, year after year.

(13:44):
Oh, meteor showers are amazing. They happen throughout the year. You can go to various websites and find out which meteor showers is going to happen when. Some are brighter than others, just simply because they’re closer to the earth. A meteor shower is basically bits of space rock coming through our atmosphere, getting superheated and they just light up. Some actually make it through intact and others end up just burning up as they try to make it through the atmosphere. I think it helps us understand that there’s a whole different dimension to our world and for people that may, whether they just go into a rural community to look at the stars or actually make it out to our National Park units, they see a whole different part of the world that they’re just not used to seeing. And I think it helps develop, um, bringing out curiosity, why does it do, where does it go? What’s up there. And I think it helps introduce people to the fact that this is rare or potentially getting rarer, and that our natural world truly needs to be protected. I think that’s one of the biggest values is that it helps us understand where we are, knowing there are other worlds out there beyond us.

(15:16):
These days, their entire catalogs have automated hassle-free telescopes that will snap to objects in the night sky with a press of a button. I think these are great. And I jumped at the chance to use one, but they’re easy and free ways to find an observe the spectacular light show above us each night. Both the Google play store and the Apple app store are chock full of free apps that turn your phone into a little augmented reality window full of neatly labeled stars, planets, and constellations.

(15:44):
Seeing the Milky Way overhead. Seeing just the sky totally full of stars. It’s just this feeling of feeling so small and so insignificant, but also in a good way that almost leads to being at peace and like accepting where I’m at and your place kind of in the world and the universe. I think it’s also powerful, you know, to look up and think that people across the world they’re seeing, you know, potentially the same thing I am. Someone is standing in this spot 2000 years ago and saw the same thing that I did, and I think just feeling that like sense of continuity over time and telling them that connection with both the past, the present and the future, um, and just feeling so small in the universe, I think is something that’s hard to put into words, but it’s, you know, refreshing and I would encourage anyone to do.

(16:43):
I just liked the sense of vastness. I grew up as a child being taken outdoors at night. I think it’s a shame that there are people out there who’ve never seen the stars in the Milky Way and such. You almost take it for granted until someone reminds you how special where we live really is because we see it every day. We see the stars every night and yeah, as soon as I took the next trip down to Bakersfield, and I sat in the backyard of my mother-in-law’s house, I was like, I can’t see a single star. I was like, no wonder those kids were just in awe. So it was really a moment of feeling, very, very blessed and very fortunate to live here in Siskiyou County and how that amazing night sky to, you know, look up at every single night whenever I want to. When you’re sitting there and you’re looking at that night sky, keeping your ears open, you’re going to hear different wildlife in the background. And the night chorus, essentially that comes with that night sky viewing, is also pretty awesome to listen to, and just take it all in, just take a moment, slow down and just enjoy it all.

Deer Mountain Snow Park

Snowmobiles are technically sleds, right?  This area can be described as a mecca for all winter sports. Also called Chuck Best Snowmobile Park, this snow lover’s heaven welcomes snowmobilers, sledders, skiers and snowshoers to over 250 miles of trails, valleys, vistas and more in the area. Winter camping is available, as well as restrooms and a warming hut on site. Snowmobile rentals are available seasonally through Fun Factory. They host guided backcountry tours as well. Make sure to check the Open/Closed status of the snow park here and pre-arrange any tours or snow machine rentals with Fun Factory before heading out. There is lots of winter fun to be had at Deer Mountain!

Mt Shasta Ski Park

If you don’t partake in skiing or snowboarding, a trip to “The Ski Park” can still offer a rush of alpine fun. Enjoy sailing down the 300-foot-long side by side tubing lanes, accessed by a magic carpet. Rental tubes are provided with your pass and are sold in tw0-hour increments. Pre-purchasing tickets is recommended so check the Ski Park’s website before heading out. Be sure to spend some time at the lodge and outdoor fire pits too!

Mt Shasta Nordic Center

Also located on the Ski Park Highway, the Mt Shasta Nordic Center is a wonderland of winter recreation. Although not exactly downhill sledding, folks come here to enjoy Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. This is a great place to find some solitude and delight in the slushing of the snow beneath your feet. Day passes, lessons, and rental equipment are available as well as pull-sleds for the little ones. This is an epic way to embrace your surroundings on a crisp winter day!

Snowman’s Hill

By far the most popular and well-known sledding spot in South Siskiyou. This place can be found at the summit of Highway 89 between Mount Shasta and McCloud, across from the Ski Park Highway intersection. There is ample parking and bathrooms are on site. This is a big hill, so be prepared to fly!

Bunny Flat

Who can say they have gone sledding on a volcano with the 5th highest peak in California? You can! Just driving up to Bunny Flat, via Everett Memorial Highway is epic. This trailhead on the slopes of Mt Shasta, is a recreation area and access point to the upper mountain. Open throughout the winter, this location has bathrooms, parking and snowy slopes sure to offer some winter fun. This is also the gateway for many backcountry skiers and mountaineers heading further up the mountain. Be sure to check current road conditions before selecting this location!

Shastice Park

The city park in Mt Shasta, has gentle sloping hills on the opposite end of the parking lot from the Siskiyou Ice Rink. This is a great place for less adventurous sledding or families with kiddos. This is also right nearby downtown Mount Shasta, so after a fun-filled winter day outdoors, a hot mug of cocoa is not too far away!

You can gear up for your next snow adventure at a number of local shops, our favorites are McCloud Outdoors & Gear Exchange, The Fifth Season, and Sportsmen’s Den. These locations rent and sell a variety of winter outdoor apparel, gear, and guide services. Sleds can be purchased at local hardware stores such as Ramshaw Ace or Solano’s in Mount Shasta. Always be sure dress warm and pack your vehicle appropriately for winter weather when venturing out, AWD or chains are a must in these parts. Spring Mushrooms

Siskiyou County offers excellent habitat for spring mushroom hunting! Lots of the edible mushroom species we seek are “mycorrhizal” meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with a tree – exchanging beneficial nutrients for carbon and sugars. Ponderosas, true firs, Douglas firs, pines, and cedars all form a complex forest type typically referred to as “California mixed conifer”. Many different kinds of oaks also pepper the landscape and play host to fungi. Foragers can expect to find gourmet edibles such as morels and spring porcini in the area.    

What To Look For

 As you drive around the forests in April, May and June you will likely see signs of foragers roaming the woods, even if it is only their cars parked on the side of the road. 

Morchella species, aka morels, are arguably the most prized of all mushrooms. It is easy to spend a few days searching high and low trying to find these elusive fungi. However, once you unlock their secrets, you can really fill your basket.

Morels typically fall into three distinct types: 

1. Natural morels tend to grow in the same areas, during the same time of year, year after year. In Siskiyou county you may find both “black morels” and “blonde morels” which are easy to distinguish by their respective colors. 
2. Burn morels are fleeting – they grow in the same spot for a few years only, but in great abundance if the weather cooperates. They can happen anywhere in the area where a conifer forest was impacted by fire. Hunting these spots requires planning and research, unless you happen to drive past a burn.  
3. Disturbance morels also commonly known as logging morels, are usually found in areas that have been logged within the last few years. These fungi are typically black morels, and like burn morels, can fruit in astounding quantities if you hit the right spot at the right time. The disturbance morels tend to fruit before the burn morels, at the same elevations.

Boletus rex-veris, commonly called the spring porcini or spring king, is another popular gourmet mushroom available to foragers in this region. This large and charismatic mushroom can be easy to spot but is often hiding under the pine and fir duff forming a camouflaged “shrump” or mushroom hump. Look for these especially around fir trees.

The most popular spring king spots can be found near Mt. Shasta with McCloud being well-known as the epicenter of the local hunt. In fact every year McCloud is host to the popular McCloud Mushroom Festival. 2024 marks their 20th Annual event, held every Memorial Day weekend – May 25-26th this year. The festival touts over 100 artisan, craft and food vendors as well as music from local and well-known bands. More than 10,000 people gather each year for this one-of-a-kind event!

Where & When

Siskiyou County claims two massive National Forests – Klamath National Forest and Shasta Trinity National Forest. These huge swaths of protected land are primary hunting spots for spring mushroom foragers. Both allow mushroom hunting with personal collections up to 1 gallon per day. Familiarize yourself with the mushroom collection rules of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the rules for Klamath National Forest, it’s important to carry your permit at all times.   

Do not hunt mushrooms in California State Parks like Castle Crags State Park where harvesting mushrooms is against the rules.

The area around the base of Mt Shasta is especially popular with mushroom hunters. It is accessible via hundreds of miles of roads and the forest is endless.

Follow the mushrooms up the hillsides as the season progresses from April through May and into June. From 3,000 to 6,000 feet in elevation is the typical range you will find yourself looking for the fruits of the forest. However, the mushrooms are wiley and can certainly be found outside of these rough guidelines.

Practical Tips

• Keep your mushrooms cool – cooling down mushrooms after picking them can really extend their shelf life. Alternatively, morels and porcini dehydrate very well and are delicious when rehydrated.
• Consider weather and road conditions. Check with your local forest service office for closures.
• Remember cell phones often don’t work in the field. Practice safe hiking practices. Let someone know where you are going. 
• Don’t eat any wild mushroom if you are not 100% sure about your identification. If in doubt, do not consume. 
• Cook your mushrooms thoroughly, especially morels, which will sicken people if raw or undercooked.

Sustainable Hunting Practices

Sustainable mushroom foraging practices are correlated to protecting the habitat – if the trees disappear so too will the mushrooms. That said, there are many things the mindful forager can do to help guarantee a harvest in years to come:

• Tread lightly – the main organism of the mushroom lives under the ground in a vast network of threads. Trampling the mycelial network or raking the forest floor can damage the ecosystem and potentially inhibit future fruitings. 
• Leave some behind – whether for spore production, animal food, or for fellow foragers to collect, it’s always good practice to leave some mushrooms behind to aid spore dispersal and complete the lifecycle.
• Leave no trace

Tools

Like any hobby, it pays to do a little homework to get yourself up to speed before you jump in. Mushroom hunting is a wonderful activity – the more you learn, the more mushrooms you add to your edible basket. In time, you will be surprised at how much you know about the forest floor!

• A regional identification book is key to learning your local land and its fungi. 
  • All That the Rain Promises and More (Arora) is a popular pocket-guide.
  • Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast (Siegel & Schwarz) is an excellent desk reference
• Join a local mycological society. These clubs typically organize forays in season and have lots of friendly and knowledgeable folks who are keen to help you out. 
• Look for relevant Facebook or Reddit groups online – lots of valuable information can be gleaned just from watching the photos that come through local groups. At the least it will tell you what is fruiting now and in what kind of habitat (what kind of leaves or needles do you see on the forest floor in photos?). 
• The burn morel hunting maps at Modern Forager have rated burn perimeters and USFS disturbance maps as well as many other helpful map layers for those interest in burn morels and disturbance morels.
