The Marble Rim Gallery is a non-profit community gallery in Etna in the community of Scott Valley, California. Everything displayed and for sale in the gallery is made by local artisans. Marble Rim showcases the work of its members and hosts a special show celebrating a featured artist every month. They host a number of shows and events throughout the year. Yreka: Liberty Arts

A non-profit contemporary art gallery featuring local and guest artists, community outreach, and educations programs. In addition to its exhibitions in the gallery, Liberty Arts opened up their Explorations Arts Education program, classes meet the gallery with a docent tour highlighting interesting techniques, subjects and ideas. The students then proceed to the studio, also on Miner Street where they can create their own artwork using the elements and techniques they have experienced in the gallery. The exhibition schedule and Exploration classes are all available on the Liberty Arts website.

Happy Camp: Karuk Tribe People’s Center

As the cultural center for the Karuk Tribe, the People’s Center is devoted to the preservation, promotion and celebration of Karuk history, language, traditions and living culture. Located in Happy Camp, the headquarters of the Karuk tribe, the exhibition gallery at the People’s Center hosts a collection of historic photographs, woven baskets, beadwork, and more made by the Karuk people. The art of basketweaving has been refined over time and passed down through many generations, keeping the cultural heritage of the Karuk people alive.

Located in the heart of downtown Dunsmuir, Siskiyou Arts Museum strives to enrich the lives of artists, residents, and visitors to Siskiyou County through exhibition, sale, and interpretation of the visual, literary, and performing arts. The SAM features 60 to 100 local and regional artists in the gift shop and two large gallery spaces.

Watson’s Vet’s Club History

Part of the old historic “Whisky Row”, “The Vet’s” survived two fires when all of downtown burned. It actually saved the town twice during those fires, and it’s long hall brings you right back to the old west. There was a brothel upstairs with 8 rooms and a madame to keep the men coming back thirsty for more.

The bar itself came to Shasta by train in the early 30’s and has been here ever since.

This building has always been a bar, under many names but became The Vet’s Club during WW1 and the name has stayed as part of its title ever since.

April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

McCLOUD HOTEL

Situated at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta, the McCloud Hotel was built more than a century ago but offers modern-day amenities sure to please everyone, including the family pet. Dog treats are available at the front desk, and dog beds for any size canine can be provided as well.

A park across the street from the hotel is a beautiful place to walk your dog, or stroll amongst the shops in Historic Downtown McCloud, a nationally registered historic district with 17 buildings designated as landmarks. Leashed dogs are allowed on Gray Butte Trail, one of the only dog-friendly hiking trails at Mt. Shasta. When you’re ready to eat, head to the dog-friendly Axe and Rose Public House, a casual dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel.

RAILROAD PARK RESORT

Stay in one of the Railroad Park Resort’s caboose lodging units, complete with modern amenities, or rest your head in a vintage cabin, perfect for families or large groups. There are also 23 RV sites and 24 tent campsites throughout the property. Best of all, dogs are welcome, and there’s even a dog park area where your puppy can run off leash.

While staying at the resort, make sure to try your hand at fishing in the Sacramento River, bike around the historic town of Dunsmuir (where the resort is located) or head 2 miles away to hike the lower Castle Crags section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Dog Trail in the Castle Crags Wilderness Area offers spectacular views of the Castle Crags and other peaks, and as you might have guessed, dogs are welcome.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

While there, make sure to spend some time at the Dunsmuir Botanical Garden, which is adjacent to the resort. The 10-acre wooded area features a variety of native species, perennial plants and walking trails, ideal for hiking and viewing the natural beauty. Dogs are welcome.

HI-LO MOTEL, CAFÉ & RV PARK

All of the 41 rooms, four apartments and RV Park of the Hi-Lo Motel in Weed are dog-friendly (and cat-friendly, by the way). The family-owned-and-operated site features a café that serves homemade comfort food.

Among the sights to see in Weed are the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, a 136-acre art installation and war memorial located in the Klamath National Forest. Just northeast of Weed is Lake Shastina, where you can hike, fish, swim, camp and more while taking in a beautiful panoramic view of Mt. Shasta. The 1.2-mile loop hike around the lake is dog-friendly. The 4.9-mile Black Butte Trail, the largest of Mt. Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, welcomes canines as well.

WINEMA HISTORIC LODGE

Popular with hunters, bird-watchers and explorers, Winema Historic Lodge in Tulelake offers large-sized lodge rooms and motel rooms, and dogs are welcome. Perfect for families or large groups, Winema features RV parking with hook-ups, as well as on-site dining options.

Tulelake is home to the unique Lava Beds National Monument, which features more than 800 caves, Native American rock art sites, historic battle fields and more. Dogs are allowed in developed areas, but not on trails, or in caves or buildings.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the first in a series of national wildlife refuges to conserve wetlands, resulting in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Tulelake. Start your adventure at the new visitor center for a look at exhibits, displays and more. Dogs are permitted at the refuge.

One of the darkest times in U.S. history is memorialized at the Tule Lake National Monument. The monument includes the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a large facility where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, and Camp Tulelake, originally a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that was converted to an additional detention facility for Japanese Americans. Dogs are allowed, although not in buildings, including the visitor center.

HUNGRY AND THIRSTY

If you’re looking for a place to eat and drink that’s open to dogs as well, visit Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen in Mt. Shasta. Dogs are allowed in the outside seating area, so bring your furry friend and enjoy scrumptious goodies such as Duck Fat Fries, Savage Salad and a What the Puck sandwich. You can wash it down with a craft or bottled beer, of which the choices are plentiful, all while you enjoy Northern California’s beautiful weather.

Also in Mt. Shasta is the popular Yaks Shack, a bakery and café with outdoor seating only, so, of course, your dog is more than welcome. From coffee and pastries to barbecue and beer, Yaks is the place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or just stop in for a snack and a breather as you visit the town, enjoying the beautiful mountain, activities and sensational sights.

There’s plenty to do in Mount Shasta

A HIKER’S PARADISE

You’ll find beautiful alpine meadows and spectacular views along the Clear Creek Trail, a 5.7-mile route that leads to a popular spot where a view of Mud Creek Falls is possible. Although the view is from a mile away, the falls are so massive, their beauty can still be seen from that distance. For those who want a closer view, there is a cross-country route from the end of the trail.

For a shorter, yet beautiful journey, Heart Lake Trail is a 2-mile moderate trail that leads to a bench on top of Castle Lake. Above Castle Lake is Heart Lake, surrounded by rocky cliffs. What makes this trail even more incredible is the view of Mount Shasta from the lake. On a clear, calm day, the sight of the mountains reflected in the lake will have you in awe. Bunny Flat Trail is another popular and fairly easy journey when the weather is warm, and a perfect location for snowshoeing in the winter. The road is the main access point for all winter activities, so the road to Bunny Flat is always plowed.

Sisson Meadow is a popular spot for visitors to take in the views and nature of this wetland. The 7.5-acre area offers plenty of wildlife and plants, as well as places to sit and public installation art. Views of Mount Shasta, Mount Eddy, Black Butte and Castle Spire are possible from this location.

Gateway Trail offers visitors access to the forest directly from the town. Only a mile or so ahead of Mount Shasta High School, this shared-use trail is popular with bikers, hikers and even equestrians, providing trail explorers of all kinds with nearly 10 miles of paths to discover.

Celebrating its 40^th anniversary in 2023, the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum offers a look at the past, present and future of the Mount Shasta region. Exhibits showcasing the history and science related to Mount Shasta and the surrounding areas have been seen by more than 500,000 visitors. The museum shares the property with the oldest fish hatchery in operation west of the Mississippi River. The hatchery opened in 1888.

From November through April, have fun on the Shastice Park outdoor ice rink. The park, located in the northeastern part of Mount Shasta, is perfect for getting your steps in, and dogs are allowed as well. Then head to Snowman’s Hill for a thrilling sledding adventure. Located between Interstate 5 and McCloud, the hill is at the high point of the roadway. For more winter fun, visit the Mount Shasta Nordic Center, a nonprofit organization that provides groomed cross-country ski trails, a snowshoe trail as well as a warming hut, ski rentals, lessons and more.

Siskiyou is home to numerous food and drink establishments, most of them independent and some family-owned. Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, located in Mount Shasta, offers a variety of comfort food and seasonal dishes, as well as craft beer and wine. Yaks on the 5 in Mount Shasta offers mouthwatering gourmet burgers, salads and microbrews, and don’t leave without trying a house-roasted coffee or handcrafted pastry. There are a variety of restaurants throughout the area, so make sure to try a few.

Mount Shasta is not just another pretty place. It’s also known for its healing arts – it is a sister mountain to Mount Fuji in Japan after all. Crystals play an important part of Mount Shasta’s allure, and there are numerous shops that offer them. According to local spiritual guides, it’s important to cleanse your crystal to clear away all the energy of the many hands that touched it. Hedge Creek Falls, which is a short drive away in Dunsmuir, and Sacramento Headwaters are among the locations with healing properties.

The Weed Store

Built in 1946, a funky shop selling shirts, gifts and souvenirs. This store, located right on the main drag when coming into Weed is where visitors can purchase the famous “I Heart Weed” gear and other tongue and cheek souvenirs. Definitely worth a stop!

Pack a picnic with goodies from Bee Kind Bakery for a secluded spot along the McCloud River Falls trail to enjoy a peaceful breakfast together or grab a fresh juice and nourishment from Alua’s Thrive Bar and stroll around Lake Siskiyou under view of the snowcapped peaks of Mt Shasta.

Adventurous couples might go snowshoeing at Mt Shasta Nordic Center or skate around the Siskiyou Ice Rink at Mt Shasta’s Shastice Park. A slower pace date might want to peruse the many art galleries and museums that Siskiyou has to offer, the options are endless, whatever your speed. Book a couples massage at Sacred Moutnain Spa or just go shopping on Yreka’s Historic Miner Street exploring the stacks at Zephyr Coffee and Books or paint a pottery craft together at Bella Art Works.

Tucked in the North Siskiyou town of Etna, Denny Bar Co. is a distillery, sit-down restaurant, AND hidden pizza gem! Their custom-built massive wood-fired oven is front and center as you enter the establishment, and their signature pies are as creative as they are crispy. Denny Bar Co. is a great spot for a cheesy slice after a day out on the trail!

Recommendation: Try the Burrata, Pepperoni and Hot Honey, what’s not to love about this combo?!

Smoked Tomato Pie

You notice the intoxicating smell of pizza right when you walk in. Quality of ingredients is what sets STP apart from the other options in Yreka. From the tomatoes to the house smoked chicken and pork, all the way to the hand filled cannoli, you can’t go wrong! Smoked tomato pie has a casual and friendly atmosphere that is great for groups, and they host local musicians regularly.

Recommendation: PPP: Smoky pulled pork, pineapple and peppers. They infuse the sauce with pineapple juice and smoked jalapenos and drizzle everything with BBQ Sauce!

Sparky’s Landing

Hand tossed dough and a wood fired oven, no wonder Sparky’s can produce up to 300 pizzas in a night! This downtown Mt Shasta restaurant specializes in craft cocktails, pastas, and steaks but we have our eyes (and tastebuds) focused on their insanely good pies. While Mt Shasta has a few options, we are currently swooning over Sparky’s Landing!

Recommendation: THE GOAT: Garlic olive oil, cheese blend, Goat Cheese, prosciutto, Caramelized onions, topped with balsamic glaze. Can we say YUM!

Pizza Factory

For over 40 years, Pizza Factory in Dunsmuir has been serving up their tasty hand-tossed pizzas. Their motto proudly declares “We Toss’em, They’re Awesome,” and they don’t lie. A mom-and-pop atmosphere and friendly service is the testament to why this pizzeria has been serving the people of Dunsmuir and its visitors for over four decades!

Recommendation: ALL MEAT: Piled high with Canadian bacon, salami, pepperoni, ham, signature sausage, and bacon! Bring your appetite!

Siskiyou offers some truly special experiences for both the wine novice and enthusiast. The landscape and climate offer unique conditions that make it an exciting area for wine production, with four distinct seasons and soil features that support the cultivation of many grape varieties. While local production is currently limited to few boutique wineries, some spectacular wine bars and tasting rooms have been popping up around Siskiyou over recent years and we can’t keep the secret to ourselves! The Wine Bar & Bistro in Yreka

A cozy and casual space close to downtown Yreka that features an extensive wine selection with bottle, glass, and flight options, craft beers, and numerous interesting and yummy small plates. The Wine Bar hosts specials like Wednesday ladies’ nights, local music regularly on weekends, and other fun events like wreath making or paint and sip experiences. The Wine Bar is a great place to visit with friends or take a date for a romantic evening on the town.

The Denny Bar Company brick building is located in downtown Etna — and was originally built in 1880 by the Parker Campbell Company, which sold goods and merchandise to the miners and settlers of the 1880s. In 1892, the second story became the site of the first high school north of Red Bluff, California, with an enrollment of 15 students. The second floor was also later used for public lectures, concerts, entertainment, as well as rooms for rent.

ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Nestled in the shadow of the region’s crown jewel, Mount Shasta, Dunsmuir offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences for any intrepid explorer, whether you’re an expert hiker or only now purchasing your first pair of boots.

Hedge Creek Falls

Nature lovers of all ages will appreciate the beauty of Hedge Creek Falls, and the best part? It’s a simple, short hike. Accessible via an easy trail, this hidden waterfall cascades into a cavern behind it, creating a unique and enchanting experience. The trailhead is conveniently located near the I-5 highway, making it an easy stop along your way into town. You’ll also be able to hike to a platform that hangs over the Sacramento River, providing you with a stunning view of Mount Shasta.

Dunsmuir City Park & Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens

Although the phrase “city park” might call to mind images of modest playgrounds and picnic tables, Dunsmuir City Park has far more to offer. With over 14 acres of scenic areas to explore, this park, which runs adjacent to the Sacramento River, is a great place to take any sized gathering, whether you’re looking to enjoy some fresh air with a partner or you’re planning a family reunion. Located within the city park are the verdant Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, which account for about 10 acres of the park’s total area. In the warmer months, you’ll find stunning native plants and flowers growing along the river trails, making this a perfect spot to snap some photos.

Castle Crags

Open year-round, this 170-million-year-old landmark is accessible from a few different points. Head up the Vista Point trail, a fairly easy hike that most are able to navigate, to see these stunning rock formations as well as an epic view of Mount Shasta. Or, for a more challenging hike, you can follow Crags Trail, which takes you right to the base of the towering Castle Dome.

Ted Fay Fly Shop

With such easy access to the Upper Sacramento River, you’d be missing out if you didn’t plan to spend an afternoon catching a fish or two for lunch. Head to Ted Fay Fly Shop to make sure you have everything you need — since 1950, this friendly, full-service destination shop has been providing downtown Dunsmuir with all its fishing needs. Once you’ve picked up all the fishing essentials, spend an afternoon trying to snag a Rainbow Trout, which swim in abundance through easily fishable areas of the Upper Sac River.

Although it is small, McCloud packs a big punch. There’s plenty to explore in this hidden gem of the Mt. Shasta area, from locally owned shops to restaurants offering the best of Siskiyou’s cuisine.

Historic Downtown McCloud

When the weather’s nice, a stroll through Downtown McCloud is the perfect way to spend your afternoon. This downtown is a registered historical district, and includes seventeen different buildings designated as landmarks themselves. As you stroll, you’ll find unique gifts, apparel, outdoor gear, fine wines, antiques and homemade treats, all offered to you by friendly shopkeepers who love to learn about visitors.

Heritage Junction Museum

Learn a little more about this historic region with a stop at the Heritage Junction Museum. Incorporated in 1983, this museum aims to collect and preserve the important pieces of McCloud’s history that might have been otherwise lost. Discover fascinating facts about McCloud’s role as a company town as Northern California grew in size, as well as the impact that the town’s railroad had on McCloud’s early development.

Natural Bliss like Nowhere Else

McCloud River Waterfalls Trail & McCloud Falls (Lower, Middle, Upper)

Take a short, beginner-friendly hike to see one of McCloud’s most iconic natural vistas, the McCloud Falls. Boasting three stunning waterfalls, this trail takes you above breathtaking works of natural art that you’ll only find here in Siskiyou. If you’re daring and the weather’s nice, you can even jump into the surrounding water by the Lower Falls — though we advise you to exercise extreme caution when jumping from high surfaces.

The Great Shasta Rail Trail

In all, the Great Shasta Rail Trail is 80 miles of scenic trail. From McCloud, you can access one end of the trail and follow it as far as you’d like. Whether you’re hiking or biking, you’ll find local flora, animals and stunning views. Dogs are also welcome on the trails, as long as they are leashed.

McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Shasta Ski Park or the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center.

Roseburg Lumber is still operating here, but many of the original buildings are being taken down. Weed now has a community college, College of the Siskiyous. Weed has outlived the wild, lawless days of its beginnings, it has succeeded in becoming an incorporated city, and the old description “one man’s town”, or “company town” no longer applies. But one man Abner Weed, lives on in the name of the town.

Hours: Daily (last week of May – September 30th), 10am – 5pm. Special off-season tours are available by appointment.
