Take a left on Stewart Springs Road, continue for four miles and take a right on Route 17. Follow Route 17 for 9.3 miles to the top of Parks Creek Summit and the intersection with the PCT. There is a large parking area on the east side of the road.

ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Nestled in the shadow of the region’s crown jewel, Mount Shasta, Dunsmuir offers a wide variety of outdoor experiences for any intrepid explorer, whether you’re an expert hiker or only now purchasing your first pair of boots.

Hedge Creek Falls

Nature lovers of all ages will appreciate the beauty of Hedge Creek Falls, and the best part? It’s a simple, short hike. Accessible via an easy trail, this hidden waterfall cascades into a cavern behind it, creating a unique and enchanting experience. The trailhead is conveniently located near the I-5 highway, making it an easy stop along your way into town. You’ll also be able to hike to a platform that hangs over the Sacramento River, providing you with a stunning view of Mount Shasta.

Dunsmuir City Park & Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens

Although the phrase “city park” might call to mind images of modest playgrounds and picnic tables, Dunsmuir City Park has far more to offer. With over 14 acres of scenic areas to explore, this park, which runs adjacent to the Sacramento River, is a great place to take any sized gathering, whether you’re looking to enjoy some fresh air with a partner or you’re planning a family reunion. Located within the city park are the verdant Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, which account for about 10 acres of the park’s total area. In the warmer months, you’ll find stunning native plants and flowers growing along the river trails, making this a perfect spot to snap some photos.

Castle Crags

Open year-round, this 170-million-year-old landmark is accessible from a few different points. Head up the Vista Point trail, a fairly easy hike that most are able to navigate, to see these stunning rock formations as well as an epic view of Mount Shasta. Or, for a more challenging hike, you can follow Crags Trail, which takes you right to the base of the towering Castle Dome.

Ted Fay Fly Shop

With such easy access to the Upper Sacramento River, you’d be missing out if you didn’t plan to spend an afternoon catching a fish or two for lunch. Head to Ted Fay Fly Shop to make sure you have everything you need — since 1950, this friendly, full-service destination shop has been providing downtown Dunsmuir with all its fishing needs. Once you’ve picked up all the fishing essentials, spend an afternoon trying to snag a Rainbow Trout, which swim in abundance through easily fishable areas of the Upper Sac River.

Farmers’ Market & Public Art

Starting in July, the Dunsmuir Farmers’ Market happens every Thursday evening. To the north of the mountain Shasta Valley is a desert, contrary to what you see on tv or in magazines. Barely wooded, the valley is a stark contrast of green against the gold desert terrain. Lined to the east and west by the Klamath and Cascade ranges, the southern end of the valley is crowned by the snowy pyramid of Mount Shasta presiding regally over its domain. The desert landscape is from the valley position amongst Mt. Shasta. There is little precipitation to the north and the desert stays as is. Just a few miles away you have dense green forests so it is a big contrast. Despite the dry climate a lot of the land is privately owned and in the southeast corner has little public land. The remainder of the valley is privately owned with one little known exception. Just east of the town of Montague lies the Shasta Valley Wildlife Refuge, a park administered by the California Department of Fish and Game. This 4657 acre former ranch has no development except agricultural infostructure.

The hiking in the Shasta Valley Wildlife Refuge is much different than other places around Mt. Shasta because it is on a road or it is cross-country. Although it is different, there is the Trout Lake which is a secret amongst most fisherman. It has a beautiful view of Mt. Shasta and if you are lucky enough you can get a nice reflection on the water. The refuge has no main hiking trail so the Trout Lake Trail is the closest thing. It is not officially sanctioned, but the trail still manages to have incredible vistas. The hike is not long, but the amount of places to venture off to and see around the lake is limitless. A hike around Trout Lake is a great thing to do when the mountains are full of snow in the winter months.

Highlights: Continuous 3,100 ft. drop, historic 1900’s logging roads

Historic Downtown McCloud

When the weather’s nice, a stroll through Downtown McCloud is the perfect way to spend your afternoon. This downtown is a registered historical district, and includes seventeen different buildings designated as landmarks themselves. As you stroll, you’ll find unique gifts, apparel, outdoor gear, fine wines, antiques and homemade treats, all offered to you by friendly shopkeepers who love to learn about visitors.

Heritage Junction Museum

Learn a little more about this historic region with a stop at the Heritage Junction Museum. Incorporated in 1983, this museum aims to collect and preserve the important pieces of McCloud’s history that might have been otherwise lost. Discover fascinating facts about McCloud’s role as a company town as Northern California grew in size, as well as the impact that the town’s railroad had on McCloud’s early development.

What’s a vacation without a little bit of a splurge? Head to Sage Restaurant for a fine dining experience you won’t soon forget. Natural Bliss like Nowhere Else

McCloud River Waterfalls Trail & McCloud Falls (Lower, Middle, Upper)

Take a short, beginner-friendly hike to see one of McCloud’s most iconic natural vistas, the McCloud Falls. The Great Shasta Rail Trail

In all, the Great Shasta Rail Trail is 80 miles of scenic trail. From McCloud, you can access one end of the trail and follow it as far as you’d like. Whether you’re hiking or biking, you’ll find local flora, animals and stunning views. Dogs are also welcome on the trails, as long as they are leashed.

McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Shasta Ski Park or the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center.

How Do You Get to Castle Lake?

Visitors can both hike and drive to Castle Lake. Driving access is via the paved Castle Lake Road starting in the town of Mt. Shasta. The road is not always open so be sure to check the latest conditions (see below).

How Long is Castle Lake Hike?

The Castle Lake Trail is 10.6 miles long out-and-back. The hike is considered slightly challenging, but is still a very popular trail. Year after year, the Castle Lake Trail draws more visitors than any other route in the area, and for good reason.

The Castle Lake Trail serves as a great introduction to the Trinity Alps and Mt. Shasta area. It is also a great day experience when taken in tandem with a hike up to Heart Lake that originates at Castle Lake.

Can You Fish in Castle Lake?

This north-facing cirque has easy access to North, West, and East-facing aspects allowing skiable terrain to be found in most snow conditions. When the lake is frozen, which is much of the winter, it is very easy to do laps that start and end at your car with the ability of doing over 1000 vertical feet in one run! The wide variety of terrain also means that there is almost always avalanche danger in the area.

The type of fish you’ll find in Castle Lake are gold shiners, brook and rainbow trout. Castle Lake has never been stocked. All trout are produced wild. The best baits to use are salmon eggs, roe, mini-crawlers, red worms and bright-colored power bait. Ice fishing during the winter is also very popular.

Camping Near Castle Lake

Approximately ¼ mile below Castle Lake you will find Castle Lake Campground. This small campground offers 6 sites with tables, fire rings and vault toilets, nestled in a thick mixed conifer forest. Bring your own water. There is no fee or reservations, but there is a 3-night limit.

Typically campground opens around the end of May and closes the first of November, depending on snowfalls and melts. Visit Castle Lake Campground website for more details and to see if it’s open.

Check Castle Lake Conditions

Since Castle Lake can be prone to varying weather conditions, especially during winter, it is always recommended to check with the Mt. Shasta Forest Service Ranger office before visiting. You can call them at (530) 926-4511 for the latest road, trail and ice conditions. Visit the Forest Services website to see if Castle Lake Road is open.

Continue south, crossing over the dam that impounds the Sacramento River and forms Lake Siskiyou. Just past the dam, make a left hand turn onto Castle Lake Road which climbs for 7 miles to the roads end at Castle Lake.

The Dog trailhead is located at an old quarry. The east half of the parking clearing is often used as a firing range, so be sure to park on the west side if possible. The Dog Trail connects to the PCT in 0.5 miles. It is so named because people hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in the company of dogs use it. To the east of the Dog Trail, the PCT passes through Castle Crags State Park, which does not allow dogs on its trails. The Dog Trail thus provides a bypass through the park. Unfortunately it also bypasses a lot of great scenery. Although the trail climbs at a moderately steep grade (nearly 600 feet in 0.5 miles) this is the steepest part of the entire journey. Initially open and climbing an old road, the trail eventually swings to the east as it passes beneath the forest canopy. Watch for a pile of rough hewn timbers just above the trail. This is the remains of an old mine. The original road that the Dog Trail now follows was constructed to access this mine. When the trail intersects the PCT, head right, to the east. Immediately after the junction the trail rounds a corner and reveals a spectacular view of Battle Mountain, one of the largest towers in the Castle Crags. The trail then reenters the forest canopy and makes a descent down to Sulphur Creek.

Though the creek is quite scenic it lacks much of the sulfuric odor for which it is named. The smell is quite evident from Castle Creek Road, further downstream. As the path climbs away from the creek crossing be alert for a well-established path coming up the creek’s canyon and continuing northward into the crags. This is a popular rock climber’s route into the heart of the Castle Crags. As the trail makes a gradual ascent it crosses the east fork of Sulphur Creek. This is also a very scenic stream. Near the top of the long grade the PCT arrives at a junction with the Flume Trail. This trail begins at Castle Crags State Park. After making its way across the valley bottom the trail steepens and makes its way up to a pair of junctions with the PCT. This is the first of the two intersections. A short distance further the trail begins to descend into another creek drainage, blessing hikers with yet another incredible view of sheer face of Battle Mountain. Soon the trail arrives at small Dump Creek. Despite its small size, the creek has numerous scenic cascades and clear pools. This is a good example of why this trail is best hiked in the spring, when small waterways such as Dump Creek are flush with rainwater and snowmelt.

Unlike the State Park, dogs are allowed in the adjacent Castle Crags Wilderness Area.

April is Dog Appreciation Month, so show your furry friends how much you love them by taking them along on a trip to Siskiyou, the northernmost part of California where adventure and natural beauty are the norm.

Fortunately, many of Siskiyou’s lodging options, restaurants, breweries and attractions are dog-friendly. We’ve provided a few locations where you can stay with your pooch, in addition to nearby amenities that will welcome them as well. Keep in mind that there may be some restrictions and fees required, so check the establishment prior to making reservations.

McCLOUD HOTEL

Situated at the base of majestic Mt. Shasta, the McCloud Hotel was built more than a century ago but offers modern-day amenities sure to please everyone, including the family pet. Dog treats are available at the front desk, and dog beds for any size canine can be provided as well.

A park across the street from the hotel is a beautiful place to walk your dog, or stroll amongst the shops in Historic Downtown McCloud, a nationally registered historic district with 17 buildings designated as landmarks. Leashed dogs are allowed on Gray Butte Trail, one of the only dog-friendly hiking trails at Mt. Shasta. When you’re ready to eat, head to the dog-friendly Axe and Rose Public House, a casual dining restaurant adjacent to the hotel.

RAILROAD PARK RESORT

Stay in one of the Railroad Park Resort’s caboose lodging units, complete with modern amenities, or rest your head in a vintage cabin, perfect for families or large groups. There are also 23 RV sites and 24 tent campsites throughout the property. Best of all, dogs are welcome, and there’s even a dog park area where your puppy can run off leash.

While staying at the resort, make sure to try your hand at fishing in the Sacramento River, bike around the historic town of Dunsmuir (where the resort is located) or head 2 miles away to hike the lower Castle Crags section of the Pacific Crest Trail. The Dog Trail in the Castle Crags Wilderness Area offers spectacular views of the Castle Crags and other peaks, and as you might have guessed, dogs are welcome.

CAVE SPRINGS

Situated along the Sacramento River and only 10 minutes from Mt. Shasta, Cave Springs is a mid-century modern resort located in Dunsmuir. Stylish hotel rooms are the perfect place to relax, or book one of the premier modern cabins, which offer inspiring views of the river and the mountain. If you desire a historic feel, reserve a 100-year-old rustic cabin with what was “state-of-the-art” in 1923, such as a private bathroom with a shower or clawfoot tub, and a kitchen with an old-fashioned gas stove. Dogs are allowed in select hotel rooms and modern cabins, as well as all rustic cabins and Airstreams, which are available to be booked.

While there, make sure to spend some time at the Dunsmuir Botanical Garden, which is adjacent to the resort. The 10-acre wooded area features a variety of native species, perennial plants and walking trails, ideal for hiking and viewing the natural beauty. Dogs are welcome.

HI-LO MOTEL, CAFÉ & RV PARK

All of the 41 rooms, four apartments and RV Park of the Hi-Lo Motel in Weed are dog-friendly (and cat-friendly, by the way). The family-owned-and-operated site features a café that serves homemade comfort food.

Among the sights to see in Weed are the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden, a 136-acre art installation and war memorial located in the Klamath National Forest. Just northeast of Weed is Lake Shastina, where you can hike, fish, swim, camp and more while taking in a beautiful panoramic view of Mt. Shasta. The 1.2-mile loop hike around the lake is dog-friendly. The 4.9-mile Black Butte Trail, the largest of Mt. Shasta’s satellite volcanic peaks, welcomes canines as well.

WINEMA HISTORIC LODGE

Popular with hunters, bird-watchers and explorers, Winema Historic Lodge in Tulelake offers large-sized lodge rooms and motel rooms, and dogs are welcome. Perfect for families or large groups, Winema features RV parking with hook-ups, as well as on-site dining options.

Tulelake is home to the unique Lava Beds National Monument, which features more than 800 caves, Native American rock art sites, historic battle fields and more. Dogs are allowed in developed areas, but not on trails, or in caves or buildings.

President Theodore Roosevelt established the first in a series of national wildlife refuges to conserve wetlands, resulting in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in Tulelake. Start your adventure at the new visitor center for a look at exhibits, displays and more. Dogs are permitted at the refuge.

One of the darkest times in U.S. history is memorialized at the Tule Lake National Monument. The monument includes the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a large facility where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II, and Camp Tulelake, originally a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that was converted to an additional detention facility for Japanese Americans. Dogs are allowed, although not in buildings, including the visitor center.

HUNGRY AND THIRSTY

If you’re looking for a place to eat and drink that’s open to dogs as well, visit Pipeline Craft Taps & Kitchen in Mt. Shasta. Dogs are allowed in the outside seating area, so bring your furry friend and enjoy scrumptious goodies such as Duck Fat Fries, Savage Salad and a What the Puck sandwich. You can wash it down with a craft or bottled beer, of which the choices are plentiful, all while you enjoy Northern California’s beautiful weather.

Also in Mt. Shasta is the popular Yaks Shack, a bakery and café with outdoor seating only, so, of course, your dog is more than welcome. From coffee and pastries to barbecue and beer, Yaks is the place for breakfast, lunch or dinner, or just stop in for a snack and a breather as you visit the town, enjoying the beautiful mountain, activities and sensational sights.

Start from the parking area at the end of Vista Point Road, where a well marked trail sets out for Vista Point. The quarter-mile long trail takes a horseshoe-shaped course up to a landing on Kettlebelly Ridge. The trail starts out heading southeast, but swings around to face northwest toward the Castle Crags. At 0.15 miles, as the trail is making a curve to the right, you will pass the top of another trail on the left that descends toward the campground. Continue up the trail, which levels out and arrives at the scenic overlook.

Reaching the overlook, you will first be struck by the head-on view of the Castle Crags. The mountains rise 3,000 feet above the overlook and are made up of jagged rugged peaks.

Find a large opening in the trees to your right and it will line you up perfectly for a clear views north toward Mount Shasta. This massive volcano is over 14,000 feet tall and completely covered in snow during the winter months. In geological terms, Mount Shasta is relatively young compared to the area’s other mountains, having begun forming just 530,000 years ago.

There is also a gap in the trees to the left, providing a window up a canyon carved by Castle Creek. Across the canyon there are evergree ridges topped by rocky peaks known as the Gray Rocks, which look different from the Castle Crags and are actually made up of greenstone.

There are picnic tables and a viewing scope at the vista point, allowing you to really enjoy the surroundings. Vista Point Trail is wheelchair-friendly and gains 50 feet in a quarter mile, with a typical grade of 4% and a typical width of 4 feet. Dogs and bikes are not allowed on trails in Castle Crags State Park. There is an entrance fee for Castle Crags State Park ($10 as of 2015).

This hike is the only dog-friendly trail in Castle Crags State Park.

Directions:Take Interstate 5 to exit 724 in Castella (located 14 miles south of Mount Shasta City and 44 miles north of Redding). At the bottom of the offramp, turn northwest onto Castle Creek Road. Drive 0.3 miles and turn right into the park entrance. Inside the park, bear right and drive almost two miles up Vista Point Road to the parking area at the road’s end where the trail begins. This road goes through the campground before heading up Kettlebelly Ridge. You will pass the start of the longer Castle Trail just before reaching the parking area for Vista Point Trail.

Take a Hike, but bring a jacket!

Solitude and natural beauty are two things that come to mind when visiting Siskiyou in November. The rush of summer tourists has passed, and things seem to start settling down to prepare for winter. Explore Native American History in Siskiyou

November is Native American History Month, a time to celebrate traditions, language and stories of the indigenous communities of this land. Native people have been traced to inhabit Northern California for over 10,000 years and have maintained a strong cultural identity in Siskiyou through much adversity over time.

The tribes that call Siskiyou home are the Karuk, Shasta, Modoc, and Yurok. The Karuk, which is one of California’s largest tribes is headquartered in Happy Camp, in West Siskiyou. Visitors can experience the cultural heritage of the Karuk thorough a collection of items at the People’s Center and Museum. In Yreka, check out the Native American Gallery in the Siskiyou County Museum, which explores the history and artistry of the Karuk and other local tribes.

Today, the tribes in Siskiyou continue to honor and preserve their cultural heritage through events, education, and community initiatives. There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

Trail to East Boulder Creek Falls:

The East Boulder Lake Loop begins mildly, following East Boulder Creek through a wide, shallow canyon. Craggy Peak, among the highest peaks in the Scott Mountains, can occasionally be observed through the fairly light forest cover. The creek remains on the right hand side of the trail, which passes through intermittent meadows. About 0.5 miles from the trailhead the route crosses the wilderness boundary, entering the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Continuing past the boundary, watch for faint use trails branching off to the right. These lead to Lower Boulder Lake and the Cement Banks area, a geologic formation similar to the Cement Bluff found at the east end of the Scott Mountains, near Mount Eddy and China Mountain. After 0.75 miles from the wilderness boundary, the trail begins to climb a little more earnestly, swinging close to a small waterfall a short distance from the outlet of East Boulder Lake. The rock along this section of the trail is gray granite, a stark contrast to the bright red rock that composes the East Boulder Lake Basin. After climbing above the falls, the trail crosses the creek immediately prior to being deposited at East Boulder Lake’s outlet.

There’s plenty to do in Mount Shasta

The beauty of Siskiyou, California’s northernmost region, is a sight to behold any time of the year. Visiting Mount Shasta, the second-highest peak in the Cascades, makes your trip to Siskiyou even better given the wide variety of activities available around the mountain, not to mention its spectacular view.

If you plan a vacation during the winter, you’ll find plenty of spots to ice skate, ski, snowboard and ice fish, just to name a few ideas. The magic of spring brings flowers of every color and an abundance of ways to explore Mount Shasta, such as on foot, by car or with the assistance of a tour guide.

Summertime means getting in and on the water, including Lake Siskiyou. The lake, located at the foot of Mount Shasta, offers plenty of trails that are ideal for sightseeing, as well as excellent conditions for boating, swimming, paddling and all sorts of water sports. And the yellow, orange, rose and burgundy colors of the trees in autumn, especially with a backdrop of Mount Shasta, provide a spectacular vision you’ll never forget. Whether you enjoy the view by hiking, biking or simply strolling around, the sights are breathtaking.

Here are a few ideas for your first (or return) trip to majestic Mount Shasta and Siskiyou, the crown jewel of northern California.

LAKE SISKIYOU

Located about 2 miles from Mount Shasta is Lake Siskiyou, which offers plenty of shoreline and a trail around the lake with several access points for boaters, swimmers and others year-round.

Whether you like to camp, glamp or something in between, there are plenty of opportunities. Located right on the lake is Lake Siskiyou Resort Camp, a beautiful getaway surrounded by tall Douglas firs, pines and cedar trees. From tent camping to spacious houses, there’s a lodging choice that’s perfect for you. Kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, walking the 6.5-mile long trail around the lake and more is available to you. During the summer, a waterpark of large inflatables is pure fun for all ages. Make sure to bring a blanket no matter what time of year you arrive, because when the sun goes down, the stars come out like you’ve never seen before.

MOUNT SHASTA RESORT

If your idea of camping is staying at a highly rated all-season resort, then Mount Shasta Resort is for you. Nestled in a forest that overlooks Lake Siskiyou, the private chalets at the resort offer all the comfort of home plus activities like golfing on an 18-hole golf course, horseback riding, skiing, relaxing at a day spa and dining in an exceptional resort restaurant with views of the mountain.

MOUNT SHASTA CITY PARK

The 26-acre Mount Shasta City Park, located 1 mile north of downtown Mount Shasta, is the site for numerous public events throughout the year. With four scenic picnic areas, a gazebo, a playground and other amenities, this area is perfect for a relaxing day with the family. You can spend the day unwinding, or explore a nature trail that winds through the trees and meadow as well as a trail that leads to the beautiful Headwaters Spring,

A HIKER’S PARADISE

The Siskiyou area is known for its outdoor recreational activities, and hiking is at the top of most adventurer’s list.

You’ll find beautiful alpine meadows and spectacular views along the Clear Creek Trail, a 5.7-mile route that leads to a popular spot where a view of Mud Creek Falls is possible. Although the view is from a mile away, the falls are so massive, their beauty can still be seen from that distance. For those who want a closer view, there is a cross-country route from the end of the trail.

For a shorter, yet beautiful journey, Heart Lake Trail is a 2-mile moderate trail that leads to a bench on top of Castle Lake. Above Castle Lake is Heart Lake, surrounded by rocky cliffs. What makes this trail even more incredible is the view of Mount Shasta from the lake. On a clear, calm day, the sight of the mountains reflected in the lake will have you in awe. Bunny Flat Trail is another popular and fairly easy journey when the weather is warm, and a perfect location for snowshoeing in the winter. The road is the main access point for all winter activities, so the road to Bunny Flat is always plowed.

Sisson Meadow is a popular spot for visitors to take in the views and nature of this wetland. The 7.5-acre area offers plenty of wildlife and plants, as well as places to sit and public installation art. Views of Mount Shasta, Mount Eddy, Black Butte and Castle Spire are possible from this location.

Gateway Trail offers visitors access to the forest directly from the town. Only a mile or so ahead of Mount Shasta High School, this shared-use trail is popular with bikers, hikers and even equestrians, providing trail explorers of all kinds with nearly 10 miles of paths to discover.

CHECK IT OUT!

Celebrating its 40^th anniversary in 2023, the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum offers a look at the past, present and future of the Mount Shasta region. Exhibits showcasing the history and science related to Mount Shasta and the surrounding areas have been seen by more than 500,000 visitors. The museum shares the property with the oldest fish hatchery in operation west of the Mississippi River. The hatchery opened in 1888.

From November through April, have fun on the Shastice Park outdoor ice rink. The park, located in the northeastern part of Mount Shasta, is perfect for getting your steps in, and dogs are allowed as well. Then head to Snowman’s Hill for a thrilling sledding adventure. Located between Interstate 5 and McCloud, the hill is at the high point of the roadway. For more winter fun, visit the Mount Shasta Nordic Center, a nonprofit organization that provides groomed cross-country ski trails, a snowshoe trail as well as a warming hut, ski rentals, lessons and more.

Siskiyou is home to numerous food and drink establishments, most of them independent and some family-owned. Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, located in Mount Shasta, offers a variety of comfort food and seasonal dishes, as well as craft beer and wine. Yaks on the 5 in Mount Shasta offers mouthwatering gourmet burgers, salads and microbrews, and don’t leave without trying a house-roasted coffee or handcrafted pastry. There are a variety of restaurants throughout the area, so make sure to try a few.

Mount Shasta is not just another pretty place. It’s also known for its healing arts – it is a sister mountain to Mount Fuji in Japan after all. Crystals play an important part of Mount Shasta’s allure, and there are numerous shops that offer them. According to local spiritual guides, it’s important to cleanse your crystal to clear away all the energy of the many hands that touched it. Hedge Creek Falls, which is a short drive away in Dunsmuir, and Sacramento Headwaters are among the locations with healing properties.
