Episode Transcript – Fishing in Siskiyou:

(00:03):

Hey there! I’m Drew Alvarez and you’re listening to the Discover Siskiyou podcast locally produced in beautiful historic Dunsmuir. We highlight the best that California’s North has to offer. On today’s episode, we’ll talk about one of the star attractions of Siskiyou County – fishing.

Maybe you need some time spent alone in waiters. Maybe you’re looking for that perfect spot to take the kids and practice casting, or maybe you’re looking for a guided fly-fishing adventure. Whatever the case, and this is probably no surprise, Siskiyou is the place to grab your tackle box and head out from the Klamath. And it’s many tributaries to the upper Sacramento and Siskiyou is full of world-class opportunities to fish for everything from bass to steelhead. And we’ve got the folks who can help get you out there for yourself. So let’s start at the local fishing hub, the Ted Fay Fly Shop in Dunsmuir, a locally-owned store that’s been serving anglers for over half a century.

(00:58):

Well, I’m Bob Grace. I’m the owner of Ted Fay Fly Shop. Uh, I’ve owned it since 1997. I am the third owner. Joe Kimsey is the person that I bought the store from. And Joe bought it from Ted’s estate. He didn’t change the name, so I didn’t see any reason to change it either, so it marches on with that name. It’s probably the oldest fly shop in continuous operation in California.

I look back at my first visits to Dunsmuir, uh, and I walked into the Ted Fay Fly Shop as a customer. And Joe showed me where to go and how to do it. Low and behold, it worked. So then I progressed as an angler, uh, and I progressed as, you know, Siskiyou County angler as I, as I learned those things. So yeah, there are opportunities, really solid opportunities. If the people take the advice that they’re given and, you know, they’ll, they’ll be able to catch fish.

(01:47):

We have a lot of angling opportunities for the beginner here in Dunsmuir because of the way the regulations are set up. That there’s a significant portion of the river, about seven miles from a bridge site here in Dunsmuir, in the Scarlet Way bridge site, down to the Sweetbriar bridge, which is about about seven miles south of here. And that area is relatively heavily planted, so on any given day, a beginning angler can, can go out and fish to a planted fish. It’s not something that everybody craves, but frankly, it’s, it’s a great opportunity is a great educational opportunity for a beginner. It’s an opportunity to get feedback with fish that may be a little less cautious, uh, but that’s how you learn and, and it’s how you progress.

So, uh, yeah, there’s some great opportunities right here in town. And, uh, when I bought the store in 1997, uh, there were three fly shops in Dunsmuir and I always joke. I’ve had my taste of competition. I was the third place store in a one shop town. It’s worked out well.

(02:52):

There’s no doubt about it. You can’t talk about fishing in Siskiyou County without the shop coming up in conversation. We, with some of the most experienced anglers we know Carol Skalko and Curtis Knight.

(03:04):

The Ted Fay Fly Shop. When I got into the foray of fly fishing and eating flies, because I’m a little too impatient to make them. I became friends with Joe Kimsey who bought the store from Ted Fay. And I went fishing with him and we went in his truck. We went on a hunting roads that were so small. We were, branches were hitting the truck. My daughter was with me and he took me to a little creek that we had to sneak up on. You have to tiptoe before you get to them and we’d sneak up on it and catch these little golden trout or different kinds of trout that were in this creek. that was not more than 10 feet across.

He was a great resource. He would always want to, uh, tell you his stories, take you places. And he even taught me how to fly fish for bass in a Lake Siskiyou. Quite extraordinary. My connection with that store is great, and Bob who owns it now is he’s super.

(03:58):

We’re fortunate here in Siskiyou County to have, I think, one of the coolest, best fly shops on the planet with Ted Fay, Bob Grace. I mean, it’s the history with that shop and what he has for a small town shop too. And the knowledge you get, you get a lot when you go in there. So that’s a, that’s always a great first stop if you want to want to go fishing here in Siskiyou. And the guides that live here, I mean, it’s amazing the talent level. I mean, I guess it shouldn’t be too surprising because we have such great water and it is such a great place, but there’s a number of really good guides and outfitters out there.

And if you’re a beginner, you learn years of things in one session with some of these great guides that are here locally. So definitely encourage doing in that. You’ll get the same advice when you come up to Siskiyou and have a chat with Bob himself. And, of course, there’s a lot of great guides, a lot of great guides in the area. If, if the time and the resources allow, uh, you know, you can hire some of these people. They’re great instructors.

So how does a visitor get a chance to learn from these fabled fishermen to find out? We spoke with Davis Elliott, a local guide.

(05:10):

Um, so my name is Davis originally from Fayetteville, Arkansas. I’ve been living in the Shasta area for the last five years. Um, I was guiding in, I started out my guiding career in Estes park. Colorado was doing that for a few seasons. And within the past two years started guiding with Wild Waters Fly Fishing, which were based in Mount Shasta, just about seven of us guides that are actually living in the area.

However, the company contracts out up to 30 guides during our busiest season. It’s capable of, you know, taking out big group trips and running people everywhere, all over the state, really. Um, but yeah, we operate all year round John Rickard and Chuck Volckhausen. Those are kind of the names to look out for as the owners of the company and Rick Cox, he’s our booking manager. Um, he has been in the area for about 20 to 30 years. He guides trips as well. If you guys would like to book a trip,

(05:58):

Find more information on booking a trip in our show notes or by visiting DiscoverSiskiyou.com. So now you know where to get your gear and who to call for your personalized adventure, but what’s so special about fishing in Siskiyou?

(06:12):

Water, actually, how close together everything is. We have four different rivers, all jammed in here. Granted not all of them are within Siskiyou County lines, but all of them, all their headwaters are based out of Siskiyou County. Being that we have Mount Shasta and plenty of other like lakes and whatnot, bass lakes, bass ponds, everywhere, and all kind of the nooks and crannies. If you see just about any piece of blue on a map within 60 County, it’s most likely holding fish.

(06:38):

The water. We have a lot of water and a lot of spring water, and that in particular makes for a lot of good trout fishing waters, cold. It’s clear, it’s beautiful. And it’s like that year-round. Geographically, if you look at this area, there’s probably not much like it in California, where you have all these trout fishing opportunities, uh, in, in the North state that we have. To the East, we have the McCloud River a little further east. We have the Pit, of course the upper Sacramento is here. We’ve got other lake fishing opportunities.

I have favorite places. Uh, Cantara, the Cantara Loop is, is very special. Uh, one winter, maybe five or six years ago, uh, I was spent a large amount of time up in the upper reaches of the river below Cantara Loop. I kept a, uh, ad hoc total of occurrences. And over the course of the winter, I think I fished Cantara up probably six, seven or eight times that winter. And, over the course of that winter, I saw more bold eagles than I did other fishermen.

The waters of Siskiyou will, without a doubt, leave you with your own moments to remember the area can’t help, but provide pristine flows and picture scenes and folks like Davis, make it easy to get out there yourself.

(07:59):

Around here, we generally don’t get up crazy early. Like about eight is about the earliest we’ll start really. And then we’ll fish our little hearts out and grab some lunch on the river and then wrap up the day around four or five far as the upper set goes that’s within Siskiyou County lines. The, the access on that river is phenomenal. You have I5 running alongside the river all the way from Shasta all the way to Lakehead, right? And within each of those exits in between, you can drop down to the river and fish right there. So it makes for a lighter day on the legs and you’re able to kind of drive around and kind of spot these fish based on what you’re seeing on the river as a big picture. That’s the cool thing about the upper Sac is you have the access, you have access to the whole thing.

(08:44):

And so based on conditions, you can get to exactly where you need to be based on the fish that might be swimming upstream to spawn from the lake or the residential fish and what they’re doing based on hatches and the conditions where they might be kind of spreading out to or consolidating. You have to really zoom out. When you’re fishing for trout, you’re with a very like closeup lens in a way you’re trying to pick out your bugs, you know, and, and really trying to really trying to target these, these fish almost on a microscopic level, right? Because most of the trout that you’re seeking, they’re kind of residential fish. And it, honestly, sometimes it just comes down to what’s on the menu that day for him, you know, and matching up with that for steelhead. Um, they don’t really care. They’re not out there to eat that much, right.

(09:28):

They’re just up there to spawn. They have one thing in mind. And so the, the hardest part about finding a steelhead is really zooming out and putting on your steelhead hat and looking at the river as a big picture, based on what kind of rain we have, if there’s a dam above what kind of ww- what’s the dam release doing, um as far as increases in influxes of water, and what’s gonna actually pull fish up river. And so you’re putting it all together as this big puzzle, essentially, that’s pretty attractive to me. I like really trying to solve it. And a lot of the times you don’t, you know, but say, okay,

(10:03):

So that’s a fun aspect of it. So say you show up, you know, if it’s, if it’s may on the upper Sac, you’re thinking, wow, you know, may June, I’m thinking golden stone fly on the surface. This is going to be fun. It’s kind of what you’re thinking about. You know, same thing, McCloud and or here on the upper Sac in October, October, Caddis big, dry flies out, and that’s a fun way to fish. So you thinking about the time of year, for sure.

And then once you get in, you know, you’re fine tuning again, you know, you see what’s going on. You know, I’ve had many times on the McCloud where you’re fishing and all of a sudden your arms covered with these little mayflies, and you’re like, okay, time to switch, and that can be really productive too. So it’s telling a combination of the big picture you have an idea, and then you get there and you’re adjusting to what’s going on around you. That’s what makes it really fun.

(10:55):

No, it was over on River Road and, uh, was hard to get down there. And I said, Oh, that looks like a good spot. I’m going to get down in there. And so I was in the river and so people can fish all their lives and would never be in a hatch, meaning these insects are being born in within that hour at that time. That’s when they’re all coming up at the same time.

And when I was in the river, it, it hatched, these insects came up and out. And, it went dark. It was just like, I don’t know what locusts looked like. You know, but I mean, it was heavy filled sky with insects that the fish were going to feed on. And when they come out, there’s a frenzy in the river. You can almost feel it. And I caught, I think, nine beautiful rainbows in a row that were all over it seemed like 12 to 16 inches and beautiful red stripes on them.

(11:46):

And, and it was all happening and went, oh my gosh, I’m in, I’m actually in the river in a hatch. And so I just love the idea of the sport of fly fishing when you’re in the waters and this fish thinks that what you’re presenting is something natural and they’re going to go after it and you’re going to catch it and then reel it in, look it in the eyes. Thank you, and then let it go as gently as you can. And sometimes when I’m out on the river and I don’t catch a thing, I still have the hope that I would.

But the river is, is more than just fly fishing. It’s hope. It’s always running. It never lets you down. And all the eyes that have cast their eyes upon the river all these years, they are long gone. These humans, it’s still there for me and still going to be there for my daughter and for her daughter and for everybody’s kids, you know.

(12:56):

Catching is fun, but it’s more just being out there. I mean, I think you’ll get that from most people who fish, you know, part of it is where that opportunity brings you. You know, whether it’s sitting in a boat on your favorite lake or it’s, you know, beating down the trail to your, your favorite trout stream or hanging out knee deep and an Osprey comes in and scoops a fish, you know, 10 yards in front of you and Whoa, that’s cool. I mean, those are the kind of, uh, those are the kinds of experiences. And then, and then, then yeah, then you catch fish. That’s cool too.

Walking up to the water, like so slowly, but, but surely it just like, you know, taking in every little bit, really observing and, uh, didn’t see a single fish that day, but just purely with the idea of being a complete observer to your environment like that, that really flipped a switch in my brain as far as like what I wanted to be as a fishermen.

(13:51):

And from there, like, you know, it was something I wanted to master at that point. I wanted to be able to really pick up on what’s going on around me when I’m outside, especially by a river.

Each time I stepped onto a trail, take a deep breath, cold Alpine air, or dip my hands in fresh water, there’s something about being outside that resets my perspective and lets me just sense. All of a sudden, the quiet around me is filled with creaking tree branches, glittering scrub, Jays, and the kerplunks and babbles of the river. So far, my experience with the waters of Siskiyou has been limited to rafting swimming and teeth-chattering dips after a day of climbing. While all of that has been amazing, and I’m always happy to do more. I’m really looking forward to starting to fish. I think it’s going to be good for me, even if I come home empty handed.

You know, I think as you progress as an angler and the things that bring you to the river or that you enjoy most, when you’re on the water, a change over the course of your career, first, you want to catch a fish and then you want to catch a lot of fish. And then you want to catch just a few big fish. Then as you get older, uh, and it’s just number one, being able to fish, which is important as, as I age and as I talked to my customers who are aging, that’s, that’s an important thing.

And then number two is just being there. And I know that’s cliche, but it’s, it is, it is a cliche, but it’s also real. So when you get to spend a, um, you know, a few minutes or a few hours or a few days in, uh, in something that’s not bombarded by opinion, uh, not bombarded by media, not bombarded by anything other than maybe a yellow jacket or a rattlesnake. Over my lifetime, I’ve gotten a different sense of what’s important to me and you sure the fish, the fish are why we think we’re there, but it’s probably not the real reason.

Homeward Bounty Farm is located in Grenada, the agricultural valley nestled at the foot of Mt. Shasta. The small scale farm produces organic, open-pollinated crops and has become a fixture of the Mt. Shasta Farmer’s Market and venues that serve and sell local produce. Homeward Bounty Farm is owned and run by Kate O’Brien, and by her side is husband Jonathan Mann and their young daughter.

Kate has a deep relationship to agriculture and the Siskiyou County area, and in her own words feels, “It isn’t odd that I’ve found the perfect fit in small scale agriculture, growing food and saving seeds. It has been the culture of agriculture that has struck me deep. The relationship we have with what we eat, how we eat, who we share meals with and how those acts define our days and lives…An even more resonating chapter in my passion for food…is my recent move back to Siskiyou County and the honor of growing food and seeds for the community that raised me”.

Want to meet Kate or buy some Homeward Bounty Farm Produce?

Visit the beautiful<a title="Mt.
Eat out, locally! Cafe Maddalena has been a lovely supporter of Homeward Bounty Farm’s efforts. Brett’s creativity and chef skills take fresh produce to another level!

Shasta view has an Island Canopied Queen Bed; fluffy towels; custom tiled floors, shower and backsplashes; a private garden with a fire pit and original art. Our cozy BnB has a fully equipped self-serve kitchen with thoughtful amenities and smart design. Easy on/off I-5 to Mt. Shasta, Dunsmuir, McCloud or Mineral Springs activities.

THE SPACE

WHAT IS THE WELCOME LIKE?

There is a Welcome Board outside the cottage. We love to have special little surprises, to get the oohhs and aaahhhs! We like a 15 to 20 minute heads-up before your arrival. When you arrive we will take you on a tour of the cottage and gardens which are down the driveway OR we can make arrangements for you to let yourself in. You will park your car at the bottom of the driveway.

WHAT IS THE COTTAGE LIKE?
It is a studio apartment ( 16×20) that has custom porcelain tile and a water closet (toilet, hand washing sink), shower closet, sink/stove kitchen area, sitting area, clothes closet, washer and dryer (no extra charge), a work desk/table which also has a mirror and storage for a dressing table. a monitor heater and a sleeping “island” bed. It is in the city limits with a church parking lot on one side and a residential lot on the other. The Freeway is close which makes it easy to get on and off of. There is no air conditioning although there are fans and the ability to open windows at night for cool mountain air.

HOW MANY DOES THE COTTAGE SLEEP?
Inside the cottage, the queen platform bed comfortably sleeps 2. There is also a sofa sleeper and a chaise sleeper with sleeping bags in the upper cupboard for 2 more.
The Cottage is ideal for a small family, a couple or singles.

WHAT IS A SELF-SERVE BREAKFAST?
We provide eggs for your breakfasts. Our guests recognize the value of thoughtful amenities that allow you to cook and bake your own self-serve meals as the cottage has everything you need to cook and serve meals except lunch and dinner foods. There are spices, salt and pepper, oil, Bisquick/pancake mix, and sugar and butter. We also provide milk, coffee beans and fruit. Please let us know your preferences, any allergies or gluten or lactose intolerance.

WHAT IS THE WATER LIKE?
The cottage has an under counter water heater which provides hot water for a short shower. Hot water is instant and is set very hot. Start with cold water and add hot to get the right mix. The wash is cold water only. The drinking water is pure and good here. It comes right off the mountain streams and is bottled in our area.

HOW CLOSE IS THE FREEWAY?
The freeway is nearby. Once you close the cottage door and windows it can barely be heard as the cottage is well insulated. To us the freeway is a constant calming sound. It provides easy on and off to the various attractions of the area.

WHAT IS THE GARDEN LIKE?
Garden Gate Cottage nestles down our hill. It is calming, peaceful, private, pleasant and appealing to the senses. The outdoor garden has easy style with intimate areas for conversation, eating or just relaxing. In Winter the garden is dormant and the outdoor furniture is stored. There is a view of Mt Shasta from the Cottage garden. The Conversation Areas: The Fire Pit Area with seating. We set the fire pit with wood so all you have to do is strike the match. The outdoor furniture provides lounging, seating and conversation in season. The Eating Areas: A small table and chairs just outside the cottage door. A table and chairs in the Pergola. The Relaxing Areas: The Bubbling Fountain ( in season) with seating. The bench with a tin roof. Great for listening to rain.

WHAT ARE SUMMERS LIKE?
Summer days can be very warm with cooler evenings and night air. There are fans, but no air conditioning. Open windows at night for cool air, but close them during the day when it is warm out.

WHAT ARE WINTERS LIKE?
Winter months are November through February. Nights are colder than days. Usually the sun comes out and it warms a bit even in winter. There are only a couple of times a year that we have severe winter storms. We rarely have to put on chains, but we always carry chains as we live in the mountains. You should carry chains when you come to visit in the winter. The freeway is frequently plowed in case of snow and rarely gets completely closed down. Our road is a main street and regularly gets plowed during a snow. If snow is building up it is wise to park at the mouth of our driveway unless you have snow tires. We have a snow blower.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Expect to be cared for but not hovered over. Expect friendly folk. Expect vegetables and/or fruit from the garden during the growing season which is June to September or October.
Expect cool nights and warmer days (no air conditioning).
Expect changeable weather in the winter and options for winter sports.
Expect us to keep the garden watered.
Expect the gardener. The gardener is my 96-year old Dad who lives with us. He definitely has a ‘green thumb’ and loves to work the garden. You may see him or hear the scritch-scratch of his spade. He quietly goes about the garden in some area each day of the growing season; hoeing weeds, picking produce, tilling the soil or watering. He may not have his hearing aids in, but If you can engage him in conversation, he loves it.

GUEST ACCESS

These are the things You have access to…

…Wifi. The provider is slow and sometimes streaming movies is frustrating, but you can gain on-line access. The password is in the Welcome Book.

…A TV that swivels toward the bed or toward the sitting area. There is no Cable TV. There is the TV monitor for you to stream your own movies.

…The cottage garden directly in front of the cottage with firepit.

…A private parking space, outdoor pergola to the left of the cottage and outdoor stairway.

…Optionally you may Schedule an art lesson at Juliart School with Julie Grossman. There is oil, acrylic or water color painting, fused and slumped glass, stained glass, mosaics and sculpture.

…Off limits is the vacation rental on the lower level of the main house, the garage and sheds.

Interaction with guests

Someone is always present at the Main House or in the garden during your stay.

OTHER

The Marble Rim Gallery is cooperatively organized to promote, support and encourage artists. The Marble Rim Gallery, is located at 448 Main Street, in downtown Etna, where members’ products are displayed and sold. Among the items displayed are artists’ originals in almost every medium — including: paintings, prints and photographs (framed and unframed); note cards; pottery; ceramics; hand painted saws; vintage and beaded jewelry; metal sculptures and decorative objects; ornaments; turned wooden vessels and pine needle bowls; painted gourds; handmade soaps, scrubs, candles and other luxurious items of indulgence.

The organization was created by a diverse quintet of artists and crafters in 1991. They joined together out of frustration because artshows were being produced by non-artisans, and they found that they and many other talented local artists had no place to display and show their artistic creations. Since 1991, the Gallery has remained open to the public, giving its members a chance to fulfill their dreams of displaying and selling the products of their artistic endeavors.

THE SCOTT VALLEY THEATRE COMPANY AND THE MARBLE RIM GALLERY ARE NOW PARTNERS IN THE ARTS.

Sharing similar missions and common artistic goals made a formal affiliation agreement between the Scott Valley Theatre Company, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization, and the Marble Rim Gallery, a community artists’ cooperative, a perfectly logical choice. Members of the Scott Valley Theatre Company and the Marble Rim Gallery will now work together as “partners in the arts”, to encourage and promote performing and visual arts in Scott Valley. By virtue of this formal affiliation, the Marble Rim Gallery will operate under the non-profit umbrella of the Scott Valley Theatre Company. The formal affiliation between the Scott Valley Theatre Group and the Marble Rim Gallery will be beneficial to local performing and visual artists alike because of their parallel goals. The Marble Rim Gallery (“Gallery”) artists’ cooperative grew out of the Scott Valley Creative Arts Guild, which was established in April of 1991. Similar to the SVTC, the mission of the members of the Marble Rim Gallery is to promote awareness, appreciation, and a passion in our community for all types of artistic endeavors by providing a gallery and other public events for local artists to exhibit and sell their artistic creations. The gallery is located at 11835 Main Street in Fort Jones. It is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. [Insert website info] The Marble Rim Gallery is also a place for teachers to share their skills, and a center for artists to conduct classes and workshops in drawing, water color painting, pine needles basketry, and gourd art. The Gallery currently has twelve members in its cooperative group. The members work together to sponsor annual and monthly artistic events. Gallery-sponsored events include the Scott Valley Artisans’ Street Fair in May, the Christmas Arts and Crafts Fair in December, and monthly First Friday Open House receptions which feature art by local high school students and other artists, music by local musicians, and poetry readings. These events encourage artistic diversification and the cultivation of new and upcoming local artists. Gallery members also assist in a number of community service organizations through sponsorship and/or through artistic donations for fundraisers by groups such as Madrone Hospice, Fort Jones Rotary, local libraries, FFA, Cattlewomen, and the Farm Bureau. As a result of its formal affiliation with the Scott Valley Theatre Group, members of the Marble Rim Gallery will actively promote and assist with the production of events at the Avery Memorial Theatre with the goal of encouraging even more community involvement with both performing and visual artistic endeavors in Scott Valley.

Pizza could be considered a love language in Siskiyou. Every one of our distinct pizza places below has perfected the classics and also incorporates something unique to their crowd-pleasing pies. Let’s take a tour around Siskiyou and tell you why these pizza spots are considered “fantastico”!

Denny Bar Co.

Tucked in the North Siskiyou town of Etna, Denny Bar Co. is a distillery, sit-down restaurant, AND hidden pizza gem! Their custom-built massive wood-fired oven is front and center as you enter the establishment, and their signature pies are as creative as they are crispy. Denny Bar Co. is a great spot for a cheesy slice after a day out on the trail!

Recommendation: Try the Burrata, Pepperoni and Hot Honey, what’s not to love about this combo?!

Smoked Tomato Pie

You notice the intoxicating smell of pizza right when you walk in. Quality of ingredients is what sets STP apart from the other options in Yreka. From the tomatoes to the house smoked chicken and pork, all the way to the hand filled cannoli, you can’t go wrong! Smoked tomato pie has a casual and friendly atmosphere that is great for groups, and they host local musicians regularly.

Recommendation: PPP: Smoky pulled pork, pineapple and peppers. They infuse the sauce with pineapple juice and smoked jalapenos and drizzle everything with BBQ Sauce!

Sparky’s Landing

Hand tossed dough and a wood fired oven, no wonder Sparky’s can produce up to 300 pizzas in a night! This downtown Mt Shasta restaurant specializes in craft cocktails, pastas, and steaks but we have our eyes (and tastebuds) focused on their insanely good pies. While Mt Shasta has a few options, we are currently swooning over Sparky’s Landing!

Recommendation: THE GOAT: Garlic olive oil, cheese blend, Goat Cheese, prosciutto, Caramelized onions, topped with balsamic glaze. Can we say YUM!

Pizza Factory

For over 40 years, Pizza Factory in Dunsmuir has been serving up their tasty hand-tossed pizzas. Their motto proudly declares “We Toss’em, They’re Awesome,” and they don’t lie. A mom-and-pop atmosphere and friendly service is the testament to why this pizzeria has been serving the people of Dunsmuir and its visitors for over four decades!

Recommendation: ALL MEAT: Piled high with Canadian bacon, salami, pepperoni, ham, signature sausage, and bacon! Bring your appetite!

The Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge located in rural northeastern California and Southern Oregon, was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908 as the Nation’s first waterfowl refuge.

The refuge, with a backdrop of 14,000-foot Mount Shasta to the southwest, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark.

The 50,092-acre refuge is a varied mix of intensively managed shallow marshes, open water, grassy uplands, and croplands that provide feeding, resting, nesting, and brood-rearing habitat for waterfowl and other water birds. This refuge is one of the most biologically productive refuges within the Pacific Flyway. Approximately 80 percent of the flyway’s migrating waterfowl pass through the Klamath Basin on both spring and fall migrations, with 50 percent using the refuge. Peak waterfowl populations can reach 1.8 million birds, which represent 15 to 45 percent of the total birds wintering in California. The refuge produces between 30,000 and 60,000 waterfowl annually. The refuge is also a fall staging area for 20 to 30 percent of the central valley population of sandhill crane. From 20,000 to 100,000 shorebirds use refuge wetlands during the spring migration. Wintering wildlife populations include 500 bald eagle and 30,000 tundra swan. Spring and summer nesting wildlife include many colonial water birds, such as white-faced ibis, heron, egret, cormorant, grebe, white pelican, and gulls.

In all, the refuge provides habitat for 25 species of special concern listed as threatened or sensitive by California and Oregon.

Castle Lake is a 47 acre glacial lake located high in the Eddy Mountains west of Mt. Shasta, perfect for fishing, swimming, hiking, paddleboarding, kayaking and skating. In good winters, the lake plays host to ice fishermen and ice skaters. Formed by glaciers 10,000 years ago, Castle Lake is held by a pine-covered granite bowl and is 120 feet deep next to a steep rock wall. Above the lake are the beautiful lofty spires of Castle Crags State Park. The drive up to the lake also affords stunning views of Mt. Shasta, and the parking area at the lake affords close lake access for kayakers, where there’s a four-foot hand launch. Castle Lake is a must-see for outdoor adventurers in northern California.

How Do You Get to Castle Lake?

Visitors can both hike and drive to Castle Lake. Driving access is via the paved Castle Lake Road starting in the town of Mt. Shasta. The road is not always open so be sure to check the latest conditions (see below).

How Long is Castle Lake Hike?

The Castle Lake Trail is 10.6 miles long out-and-back. The hike is considered slightly challenging, but is still a very popular trail. Year after year, the Castle Lake Trail draws more visitors than any other route in the area, and for good reason.

The Castle Lake Trail serves as a great introduction to the Trinity Alps and Mt. Shasta area. It is also a great day experience when taken in tandem with a hike up to Heart Lake that originates at Castle Lake.

Can You Fish in Castle Lake?

This north-facing cirque has easy access to North, West, and East-facing aspects allowing skiable terrain to be found in most snow conditions. When the lake is frozen, which is much of the winter, it is very easy to do laps that start and end at your car with the ability of doing over 1000 vertical feet in one run! The wide variety of terrain also means that there is almost always avalanche danger in the area.

The type of fish you’ll find in Castle Lake are gold shiners, brook and rainbow trout. Castle Lake has never been stocked. All trout are produced wild. The best baits to use are salmon eggs, roe, mini-crawlers, red worms and bright-colored power bait. Ice fishing during the winter is also very popular.

Camping Near Castle Lake

Approximately ¼ mile below Castle Lake you will find Castle Lake Campground. This small campground offers 6 sites with tables, fire rings and vault toilets, nestled in a thick mixed conifer forest. Bring your own water. There is no fee or reservations, but there is a 3-night limit.

Typically campground opens around the end of May and closes the first of November, depending on snowfalls and melts. Visit Castle Lake Campground website for more details and to see if it’s open.

Check Castle Lake Conditions

Since Castle Lake can be prone to varying weather conditions, especially during winter, it is always recommended to check with the Mt. Shasta Forest Service Ranger office before visiting. You can call them at (530) 926-4511 for the latest road, trail and ice conditions. Visit the Forest Services website to see if Castle Lake Road is open.

Great company.

The Heffernan family own and operate Five Marys Farms, named for the five girls in the family all named Mary after strong Catholic grandmothers on both sides of their families. Brian and Mary moved their family to Fort Jones CA in 2014 from the Bay Area to raise cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens on their Siskiyou County ranch.

Today, they care for their animals together as a family – working hard to produce a premium product with barley finished, dry-aged Black Angus beef, pastured Heritage pork and heritage grass-fed Navajo Churro lamb. They sell their meats by-the-cut from their farm store downtown Fort Jones (next to the restaurant!) and ship them on dry ice to customers all over the country.

They took over the historic bar in town formerly known as Charlie Bob’s and Cold Stream Tavern to create a community gathering place to serve their own ranch raised meats and their favorite cocktails.

The Siskiyou Performing Arts Center (SPAC), based in Yreka, began in 1974. A concerned group of Siskiyou county residents felt the need for community theater. During the first year, SPAC staged two major productions and organized a touring melodrama production during the summer months. Because SPAC did not have a theater building, the performances were held throughout Siskiyou County in whatever structures were available. In January, 1975, SPAC rented an old church building in Yreka. That building, named the Dunlap Theater, has been the home of SPAC ever since. SPAC was able to purchase the building complex in 1983. In 1989, SPAC received a grant from the McConnell Foundation which enabled us to pay off our mortgage on the building.

The SPAC Theater Building in Yreka has been the site of many, many productions over the past years. We have presented major theater productions, musicals, poetry readings, acting classes, benefit concerts, etc. SPAC has also produced original theater and musical events which were written and directed by local artists. Over the past few years, the local junior college, the College of the Siskiyous, has held acting, directing, and writing classes in the SPAC theater. In addition, other volunteer organizations hold their offerings in the theater building.

The SPAC theater is a very active and busy venue, always ready and willing to offer its stage and seats for the edification of the performing arts in fascinating and enlightening the citizenry of Siskiyou county. In the past few years, our membership has grown tremendously. Our list of active actors, both adult and child, has grown from a mere handful to several hundred.

Nestled in the heart of Siskiyou County’s West region, Scott Valley comprises three main towns — Fort Jones, Etna, and Callahan. Each of these towns offers visitors something completely unique, from fascinating pieces of local history to outdoor adventure of all kinds. And, being only 15 minutes away from each other, this trifecta of Siskiyou towns provides all you need for an escape of epic proportions.

Fort Jones

Fort Jones, also known as the Gateway to the Marble Mountains, is a tight-knit community with historical charm, making it the perfect stop to explore Northern California and feel like a local.

The REC
The Fort Jones Resource & Event Center — or, the REC — is the community hub of this rugged mountain town. The REC hosts a wide range of events all year long, from dances and community get-togethers to film screenings and concerts. If you can’t make it out for an event, the Relics at the REC retail store make a visit here a must on your itinerary. Browse collectibles and antiques, hand-curated by the friendly folks behind the scenes at the REC. Much like each historical landmark in Fort Jones, every item here has a story — and owners Peggi and Larry Alexander would love to chat with you about them.

This restaurant is run by the Heffernan family, and all of their meat is raised to the highest standards right down the road, at their family ranch. They ensure that every dish is made with the best possible quality of ingredients, and as a result, you can taste the difference. Stop by for one of Mary’s famous Sidecars at the bar or a juicy burger and consider taking a some of their meat cuts home from the cooler cases or their farm store where they pack and ship all of their farm raised products. If you can make it on a Friday night, you’ll also be treated to some live music with your meal on their charming outdoor patio and grass lawn.

Opened in 1888, Mt Shasta is the oldest trout hatchery west of the Mississippi. The Sisson Museum on site has excellent displays and presentations. Skiing, hiking, fishing, hunting, backpacking, mountaineering are all available in the shadow of towering 14,179 foot Mt Shasta. Picnic tables are on site.

Fish raised at the hatchery:

Eagle Lake Trout– Known for its resistance to highly alkaline waters, the Eagle Lake trout is a native to nearby Eagle Lake and its Pine Creek tributary. Due to diminishing flows into Pine Creek, a program was started in the 1950’s to preserve the species. Once found only in its native waters, the Eagle Lake trout can now be found in many waters throughout the state. Egg production for Eagle Lake Trout reaches approximately 5 million eggs.

Brown Trout – Originally from parts of Eastern Europe, the brown trout has been planted in this state for many years. A favorite of many anglers, the brown continues to be stocked in select waters despites its non-native heritage. Approximately three million eggs are produced every year at Mount Shasta.

Brook Trout Originating from the Eastern United States, brook trout were brought over the rail lines in the early 1800’s Despite their common name, the brook trout is actually a char. Brook trout are received from Crystal Lake Hatchery as eggs and catchable-size fish for stocking local waters. These brook trout are planted via air and truck into various northern California waters.

Rainbow Troute– This popular fish, native to the tributaries of the pacific ocean in North American and Asia, can now be found all over the world. Farmed as food in many areas, rainbow trout can now be found in South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Mount Shasta Hatchery currently raises 2 different strains of rainbow trout; Shasta and Coleman strains. Average egg take for the 2 rainbow trout strains is around 26 million eggs per year. Rainbow trout are provided for recreational angling are now sterile.

Spawning takes place from the beginning of November to mid-march.

Hours: Temporarily Closed
