Saturday, September 13th from 9am-12pm at Luginbuhl Ranch, 2100 Deetz Rd. Mount Shasta, CA

Join Siskiyou Land Trust (SLT) and the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center (MSBEC) for a day of exploration at SLT’s Luginbuhl Ranch Preserve, a 320-acre property at the intersection of the Upper Sacramento and Shasta River headwaters. This headwaters forest is not just a piece of property though – it is a living legacy of local conservation and stewardship. We’ll enjoy guided walks by SLT staff and interpreters followed by a continuation of our bioblitz, cataloging species on iNaturalist. At noon, we’ll meet back at the Luginbuhl Cottage for a small BBQ (hot dogs/burgers/veggie options and their fixings).

Sledding is one nostalgic pastime that all ages can enjoy during the winter months. Siskiyou is not short on places to sail down a snowy hill and feel that crisp winter air in your face. Here are our favorite spots to sled and enjoy the snowy wonderland that Siskiyou becomes each winter season.

Deer Mountain Snow Park

Snowmobiles are technically sleds, right? This area can be described as a mecca for all winter sports. Also called Chuck Best Snowmobile Park, this snow lover’s heaven welcomes snowmobilers, sledders, skiers and snowshoers to over 250 miles of trails, valleys, vistas and more in the area. Winter camping is available, as well as restrooms and a warming hut on site. Snowmobile rentals are available seasonally through Fun Factory. They host guided backcountry tours as well. Make sure to check the Open/Closed status of the snow park here and pre-arrange any tours or snow machine rentals with Fun Factory before heading out. There is lots of winter fun to be had at Deer Mountain!

If you don’t partake in skiing or snowboarding, a trip to “The Ski Park” can still offer a rush of alpine fun.
Mt Shasta Nordic Center

Also located on the Ski Park Highway, the Mt Shasta Nordic Center is a wonderland of winter recreation. Although not exactly downhill sledding, folks come here to enjoy Cross Country Skiing and Snowshoeing. This is a great place to find some solitude and delight in the slushing of the snow beneath your feet. Day passes, lessons, and rental equipment are available as well as pull-sleds for the little ones. This is an epic way to embrace your surroundings on a crisp winter day!

Snowman’s Hill

By far the most popular and well-known sledding spot in South Siskiyou. This place can be found at the summit of Highway 89 between Mount Shasta and McCloud, across from the Ski Park Highway intersection. There is ample parking and bathrooms are on site. This is a big hill, so be prepared to fly!

Bunny Flat

Who can say they have gone sledding on a volcano with the 5th highest peak in California? You can! Just driving up to Bunny Flat, via Everett Memorial Highway is epic. This trailhead on the slopes of Mt Shasta, is a recreation area and access point to the upper mountain. Open throughout the winter, this location has bathrooms, parking and snowy slopes sure to offer some winter fun. This is also the gateway for many backcountry skiers and mountaineers heading further up the mountain. Be sure to check current road conditions before selecting this location!

Ironhead Guide Service specializes in salmon and steelhead adventures on the Klamath River, with peak season September through March.

Born and raised on the Klamath River in Happy Camp, CA professional guide Mario Gomez from Ironhead Guide Service grew up on the creeks and rivers fishing for salmon, trout, and steelhead. Mario was fortunate enough to have a great year-round fishery on the Klamath River in his backyard. After catching his first steelhead on a guided fishing trip he knew that being a fishing guide was something he would pursue. 15 years into a career of fighting wildland fires for the US Forest Service, Mario chose to follow that dream and bought a custom Willie drift boat and started guiding and exploring the world of Salmon, Trout, and Steelhead fishing on the Klamath, Smith, Chetco, Umpqua, and Rogue rivers

Ironhead Guide Service believes that the most important part of a fishing trip is the EXPIERENCE. That is why they are a customer service based company and go through great lengths to insure its clients receive the best fishing experience possible. The things that set professional guide Mario Gomez apart from the competition are his state of the art boats, top of the line equipment, and his ability to produce a comfortable, fun, relaxing fishing experience.

Pro guide Mario Gomez now has 15 years of professional guiding experience running world class fishing trips on the Klamath, Smith, Chetco, Umpqua, and Rogue rivers. Mario has built from the ground up a reputable outfitter and guide service and has made a name for himself and his company in the fishing community. Ironhead Guide Service has established itself as a Premier Outfitter in California and Oregon, and has also become one of the top rated outfitter and guides in the Pacific Northwest.

Ironhead Guide Service employs all techniques when pursuing Salmon, Trout, and Steelhead including side-drifting, back trolling, fly fishing, and back-bouncing. Mario features a broad range of innovative fishing techniques, many of which have been learned throughout his carrier as a Klamath River fishing guide, Umpqua River fishing guide, Rogue River fishing guide, Chetco River fishing guide, and Smith River fishing guide.

Mario Gomez is a US Coast Guard certified OUPV Captain, bonded, insured, CPR certified, and a medical first responder, meaning your fishing trip will be completely safe. We are a non-discriminating business and an equal opportunity employer. Ironhead Guide Service operates under special use permits as a fishing guide for Bureau of Land Management Medford District, and the US Forest Service on the Klamath, Six Rivers, and Rogue-Siskiyou National Forests. Mario is certified through the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon State Marine Board as a commercial fishing guide.

The Sisson-Callahan Trail (SCT) is the longest trail in the Mount Shasta area, with the sole (and obviously significant) exception of the Pacific Crest Trail. The trail measures a little over 9 miles from the trailhead near the confluence of the North Fork of the Sacramento River with the river’s main fork, to the junction of the SCT with the PCT. Over the course of its journey, the trail follows a beautiful, wild river, passes through narrow canyons, traverses a large meadow complex, climbs out of a rugged, rarely seen canyon and descends through the Deadfall Lakes Basin, one of the prettiest spots in the region.

Category: Medium

Distance and Elevation: Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Route Type: Out & Back

Directions: The Upper portion of the Sisson Callahan Trail can be accessed at the Deadfall Meadows Trailhead located on Forest Road 17. From Mt Shasta City, drive north on Interstate 5 through the town of Weed and exit at Edgewood/Stewart Springs Rd. Turn left, drive under the freeway, then right on Old Stage/Old 99. Turn left on to Stewart Springs Road, after 4 miles Forest Road 17 splits off to the right. Follow the road to the summit and then about a mile down the other side to Deadfall Meadows Trailhead.

Trail: For the first mile and a half, the SCT winds its way up through Deadfall Meadows crossing the creek multiple times, then crosses the PCT trail and heads up to the Upper Deadfall Lakes. Right after crossing the PCT, one can take a short side trip to Lower and Middle Deadfall Lakes. For mountain biking this section is about 60% riding and 40% hike a bike. The next mile and a half of the trail takes you up past both Upper Deadfall Lakes and arrives at a saddle and a junction to either hike to Mount Eddy or continue down the SCT. This section is about 50% ridable and 50% hike a bike. The total ascent is 1800 ft of climbing in just under 3 miles. On the descent, the trail switchbacks its way down to the North Fork of the Sacramento River which it then follows for most of the way down. This section offers multiple stream crossings, rock gardens, flowy single track, and beautiful meadow scenery. During the descent, the trail sometimes hits a forest service road. Stay on right on the roads and you will eventually see the trail to the left. After approximately 10 miles riders will come to a flat opening with the North Fork of the Sacramento River on the left and the main stem of the Sacramento River in front of them. Riders can then cross the river to the left and follow the road down to the North Shore of Lake Siskiyou making sure to stay right at intersections. Total descent is 5000 ft in 10 miles.

Highlights: Observe the Pacific Crest Trail that intersects Siskiyou County, beautiful canyon views

We are excited to screen two new episodes of our docuseries Shasta Stories at the delicious Smoked Tomato Pie Sunday afternoon, April 12th. The even is about an hour and a half with a Q&A with Autie Carlisle, the director afterwards. Films start at 3pm and feel free to arrive early!

—Out of Place— Mitzi and Cheewa share about their cultures’ unmarked graves in Tulelake and how they have preserved their family history despite incarceration camps and Indian schools.

—Field Advantage— Mexicans and Homesteaders work together keeping agriculture alive and learning to acknowledge their entangled past together, despite language gaps and even deafness, they are providing the next generation of youth.

Free event but $10 suggested donation (cash in person or digital apps such as Venmo, Cash, or Paypal accepted).

Hope to see you there! Kids are welcome.

Spring Mushrooms

Siskiyou County offers excellent habitat for spring mushroom hunting! Lots of the edible mushroom species we seek are “mycorrhizal” meaning they have a symbiotic relationship with a tree – exchanging beneficial nutrients for carbon and sugars. Ponderosas, true firs, Douglas firs, pines, and cedars all form a complex forest type typically referred to as “California mixed conifer”. Many different kinds of oaks also pepper the landscape and play host to fungi. Foragers can expect to find gourmet edibles such as morels and spring porcini in the area.

What To Look For

As you drive around the forests in April, May and June you will likely see signs of foragers roaming the woods, even if it is only their cars parked on the side of the road.

Morchella species, aka morels, are arguably the most prized of all mushrooms. It is easy to spend a few days searching high and low trying to find these elusive fungi. However, once you unlock their secrets, you can really fill your basket.

Morels typically fall into three distinct types:

Natural morels tend to grow in the same areas, during the same time of year, year after year. In Siskiyou county you may find both “black morels” and “blonde morels” which are easy to distinguish by their respective colors.

Burn morels are fleeting – they grow in the same spot for a few years only, but in great abundance if the weather cooperates. They can happen anywhere in the area where a conifer forest was impacted by fire. Hunting these spots requires planning and research, unless you happen to drive past a burn.

Disturbance morels also commonly known as logging morels, are usually found in areas that have been logged within the last few years. These fungi are typically black morels, and like burn morels, can fruit in astounding quantities if you hit the right spot at the right time. The disturbance morels tend to fruit before the burn morels, at the same elevations.

Boletus rex-veris, commonly called the spring porcini or spring king, is another popular gourmet mushroom available to foragers in this region. This large and charismatic mushroom can be easy to spot but is often hiding under the pine and fir duff forming a camouflaged “shrump” or mushroom hump. Look for these especially around fir trees.

The most popular spring king spots can be found near Mt. Shasta with McCloud being well-known as the epicenter of the local hunt. In fact every year McCloud is host to the popular McCloud Mushroom Festival. 2024 marks their 20th Annual event, held every Memorial Day weekend – May 25-26th this year. The festival touts over 100 artisan, craft and food vendors as well as music from local and well-known bands. More than 10,000 people gather each year for this one-of-a-kind event!

Where & When

Siskiyou County claims two massive National Forests – Klamath National Forest and Shasta Trinity National Forest. These huge swaths of protected land are primary hunting spots for spring mushroom foragers. Both allow mushroom hunting with personal collections up to 1 gallon per day. Familiarize yourself with the mushroom collection rules of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest and the rules for Klamath National Forest, it’s important to carry your permit at all times.

Do not hunt mushrooms in California State Parks like Castle Crags State Park where harvesting mushrooms is against the rules.

The area around the base of Mt Shasta is especially popular with mushroom hunters. It is accessible via hundreds of miles of roads and the forest is endless.

Follow the mushrooms up the hillsides as the season progresses from April through May and into June. From 3,000 to 6,000 feet in elevation is the typical range you will find yourself looking for the fruits of the forest. However, the mushrooms are wiley and can certainly be found outside of these rough guidelines.

Practical Tips

Keep your mushrooms cool – cooling down mushrooms after picking them can really extend their shelf life. Alternatively, morels and porcini dehydrate very well and are delicious when rehydrated.

Consider weather and road conditions. Check with your local forest service office for closures.

Remember cell phones often don’t work in the field. Practice safe hiking practices. Let someone know where you are going.

Don’t eat any wild mushroom if you are not 100% sure about your identification. If in doubt, do not consume.

Cook your mushrooms thoroughly, especially morels, which will sicken people if raw or undercooked.

Sustainable Hunting Practices

Sustainable mushroom foraging practices are correlated to protecting the habitat – if the trees disappear so too will the mushrooms. That said, there are many things the mindful forager can do to help guarantee a harvest in years to come:

Tread lightly – the main organism of the mushroom lives under the ground in a vast network of threads. Trampling the mycelial network or raking the forest floor can damage the ecosystem and potentially inhibit future fruitings.

Leave some behind – whether for spore production, animal food, or for fellow foragers to collect, it’s always good practice to leave some mushrooms behind to aid spore dispersal and complete the lifecycle.

Leave no trace

Tools

Like any hobby, it pays to do a little homework to get yourself up to speed before you jump in. Mushroom hunting is a wonderful activity – the more you learn, the more mushrooms you add to your edible basket. In time, you will be surprised at how much you know about the forest floor!

This 27 minute local documentary is about Franklin Thom, a Karuk elder and what it was like growing up and living in Yreka as an indigenous person. He shares his own struggles of being born with disabilities and reflects on how his ancestors survived the Gold Rush days and built resilience through song, dance, and language.

Full Circle is part of a docuseries by Autie Carlisle called Shasta Stories, consisting of short documentaries showing the histories, diversity, and commonality within Siskiyou County in Northern California. Shasta Stories aims to share the true perspectives and stories to the public by documenting first-hand information that has been absent or minimal in our public storytelling, sharing cultural expression directly from the individual(s) within those cultures and preserving the voices of the elderly before they pass.

These episodes stand alone as short films and do not need to be seen as part of the series, however it enriches a broader perspective within its entire collection.

Summertime in Siskiyou offers endless breathtaking summits, cool alpine lakes, and all the outdoor adventures you can handle. It also brings with it increased risk of wildfire. While non human-caused wildfires are part of the natural ecosystem in Siskiyou, they can be a real bummer if you’re not prepared. This guide will help you recreate safely in Siskiyou during fire season, which typically occurs from August – October.

Campfire (Canva)

Don’t Cause Fires

As Smokey Bear says, “Only you can prevent wildfires.” Being a smart and safe traveler includes knowledge of simple prevention practices: Maintain your equipment and vehicle – if you’re towing, triple check that you aren’t dragging any chains. Don’t park near dry brush or grasses, research and respect burn/campfire bans, and always put your campfire OUT COLD! If you are unsure about how to put your campfire out completely (hint: pouring water on it isn’t enough), visit our blog on How to Extinguish a Campfire – Discover Siskiyou for details.

Stay Informed

While vacation is a great time to go offline and check-out, we recommend downloading a few tools before you leave home in case a fire occurs while you are traveling in Siskiyou. Here are a few of our favorites:

Watch Duty is a mobile App that alerts users of wildfire and firefighting efforts in real-time.

InciWeb is a web based interagency source for wildfire information that is provided by the US Forest Service.

Air Now is a useful resource for current smoke and air quality reporting.

Monitor incident maps, including live lookout cameras from ALERT California.

Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services provides emergency event information as well as evacuation statuses.

Follow the Klamath National Forest and Shasta-Trinity National Forest on Facebook before your trip so you are more likely to be in the know of any risk or closures.

Smoke (Canva)

Have a Backup Plan

Be flexible with your plans and research alternative lodging options in the event that fire or smoke alter your experience. For example, If you are planning to camp at Kangaroo Lake, and there is fire danger or smoke nearby, possibly alter your plans to stay at Castle Lake, or select a location like Lake Siskiyou to be closer to town and services. Siskiyou has a wide variety of lodging options across our vast region if you experience a last-minute change in travel plans!

When the fires clear, try to go back and support affected regions, particularly local businesses like Quigley’s General Store in the community of Klamath River or the Seiad Café in Seiad Valley which were both threatened and devastated by the McKinney Fire in 2022. Visiting Siskiyou’s diverse communities and small businesses ensures that they will be here for future travelers to enjoy.

The Marble Mountain Ranch is a Dude Ranch that offers fully furnished deluxe homes and housekeeping cottages with full kitchens, as well as smaller units with kitchenettes. This Klamath River B&B offers cottages and homes in various sizes and can accommodate 2 to 7 guests. Dude Ranch vacations are all inclusive; guests can participate in trail riding, rafting and kayaking, archery, talent night, camp fire activities, and fly-fishing to name a few.

Modern urban life is fettered by “digital overload”. During a dude ranch vacation you will have the opportunity to spend time in nature and interact with natural settings that are impossible to duplicate in urban life or in virtual reality. Rafting, horse riding, swimming, hiking and all of the typical dude ranch events enable you to personally experience natural reality, as apposed to synthetic virtual realities. You can explore a world beyond computers and smart-phones to rediscover the natural world and the simple joys in outdoor life. You will smell the forest flora, feel the wind across your face, and satiate all of the tactile senses.

The Yreka Creek Greenway lies completely within the city limits of Yreka, California, along 5 miles of Yreka Creek and Greenhorn Creek. Yreka Creek flows south to north and Greenhorn Creek flows west to east. The location of the project is the Yreka Creek Corridor from the Belle Avenue neighborhood park at the south limits to the City Corporation Yard at the North I-5 Interchange. Greenhorn Creek from the dam to the confluence with Yreka Creek is also included.

Yreka Creek comprises about ten percent of the Shasta River basin and is the first significant tributary to the Shasta mainstem. A portion of the anadromous steelhead entering the Shasta system use Yreka Creek as spawning and juvenile rearing habitat. Four miles of Yreka Creek flows through the City of Yreka, which is the largest urban area in the Shasta River watershed and the county seat of Siskiyou County. As a result, the lower portion of Yreka Creek is a highly visible and public watershed in the Shasta Basin, having both local and regional importance.

The Greenway continues to grow thanks to volunteer neighbors, groups and agencies, guided by the Yreka Creek Committee and the City of Yreka. Explore and enjoy the Greenway’s Visitor Center behind the Siskiyou County Museum, the trail heading north from the Oberlin Road Trailhead, and the trail west of Deer Creek Way.

This area is dog friendly.

Legends and Lore

Alien mysteries and mythical creatures are sprinkled into the legendary tales of Siskiyou’s locals and visitors. People have reported sightings of mysterious beings and strange lights around Mt Shasta. (1) Many think these are Lemurians, ancient beings of a lost continent that have taken refuge within the mountain. Perhaps it was a sighting Bigfoot or Sasquatch, an ape-like giant creature that has been known to roam and live in this area. The mysteries of Mt Shasta invite you to come and experience the extraordinary energy and unlock the secrets of the mountain for yourself.

November in Siskiyou might just be a well kept secret, it is a time for natural beauty, tranquility, and unique local experiences! There is much to do in town and also out on the trail this time of year. Book a stay and see what some are calling the best month of the year in these parts!

Take a Hike, but bring a jacket!

Solitude and natural beauty are two things that come to mind when visiting Siskiyou in November. The rush of summer tourists has passed, and things seem to start settling down to prepare for winter. The weather can be crisp in the morning for a cozy coffee drink at Zephyr Books & Coffee, but warm by the afternoon for a refreshing cold beer on the patio at Etna Brewing Co. Wearing layers is a must and the sunsets are unbeatable. Whether you prefer to enjoy the outdoors in the wild Klamath National Forest, in caves at Lava Beds National Monument, or overlooking of one of the three McCloud River Waterfalls, November is one of the most ideal months for exploring the outdoors. This is due to our many microclimates. Whether it is mountainous, high desert, rugged alpine, valley or river, the varied climates across Siskiyou add to the extensive biodiversity and endless outdoor opportunities that can be had year-round.

Explore Native American History in Siskiyou

November is Native American History Month, a time to celebrate traditions, language and stories of the indigenous communities of this land. Native people have been traced to inhabit Northern California for over 10,000 years and have maintained a strong cultural identity in Siskiyou through much adversity over time.

The tribes that call Siskiyou home are the Karuk, Shasta, Modoc, and Yurok. The Karuk, which is one of California’s largest tribes is headquartered in Happy Camp, in West Siskiyou. Visitors can experience the cultural heritage of the Karuk thorough a collection of items at the People’s Center and Museum. In Yreka, check out the Native American Gallery in the Siskiyou County Museum, which explores the history and artistry of the Karuk and other local tribes.

Today, the tribes in Siskiyou continue to honor and preserve their cultural heritage through events, education, and community initiatives. They play a vital role in local ecosystems and contribute to the cultural landscape of Siskiyou and California. Come visit Siskiyou, where you can experience indigenous cultures, and grow your understanding and appreciation for Native American history.
Rain Rock Casino: Expansion and Destination Resort

This month also announces an exciting addition to Siskiyou’s many lodging options. Yreka’s Rain Rock Casino, owned by the Karuk tribe, proudly completed a major expansion project. They nearly doubled the number of slot machines on the gaming floor to an expanded 6,000 square foot non-smoking area. Another exciting part of the project is the 43,000 square foot Rain Rock Casino Resort Hotel that, completed in November 2024, will comprise of 72 guest rooms and additional 8 cottage suites on the property. Five splash pools and soaking tubs, an outdoor fire pit, 4,000 square foot event center, gift shop, and May Yaj Asian Express Restuarant are some of the other new and exciting features. These additions will make Rain Rock a destination resort, and a must-see when visiting North Siskiyou. The architect and design team involved have taken measures to promote the unique heritage of the tribe within the space. Come see why they like to say, “It all begins with you!”

Homeward Bounty Farm is located in Grenada, the agricultural valley nestled at the foot of Mt. Shasta. The small scale farm produces organic, open-pollinated crops and has become a fixture of the Mt. Shasta Farmer’s Market and venues that serve and sell local produce. Homeward Bounty Farm is owned and run by Kate O’Brien, and by her side is husband Jonathan Mann and their young daughter.

Kate has a deep relationship to agriculture and the Siskiyou County area, and in her own words feels, “It isn’t odd that I’ve found the perfect fit in small scale agriculture, growing food and saving seeds. It has been the culture of agriculture that has struck me deep. The relationship we have with what we eat, how we eat, who we share meals with and how those acts define our days and lives…An even more resonating chapter in my passion for food…is my recent move back to Siskiyou County and the honor of growing food and seeds for the community that raised me”.

In the late 1930’s, J.J. and May Burger opened and operated the Scott Valley Feed Co. in a building in “downtown” Greenview. Eggs were a large part of their business at that time. They bought eggs from their customers to sell retail and to other wholesale outlets.

Carl Craig and Harvey Palmer bought the business in 1947 but, wanted to concentrate more on their well-drilling business, sold Scott Valley Feed Co. to Otto and Maida Brogger in November of 1949.

When Highway 3 was completed in 1956, bypassing Greenview, the Broggers acquired land next to the new highway and built the present location. They opened the doors on January 2, 1959. The Broggers then expanded their feed, seed, and farm supplies by adding nursery stock, fruit and shade trees, indoor and bedding plants, along with garden and gift items. Maida’s talent can still be seen in the store on the handmade “GARDEN & GIFTS” cedar signboard she made with letters formed from pine branches. Otto, as secretary of the Scott Valley Chamber of Commerce since its foundation, did much of the Chamber’s work in the store along with his feed business.

Carl and Tory Austin bought the Scott Valley Feed Store from Otto and Maida Brogger when the Broggers retired from the feed business in 1975. The Austins added another department – the “Craft Corral”, featuring art and craft supplies. Their son, Benny, added the tack department and his wife, Kathy, enlarged the nursery stock, adding ground cover and perennials.

As Scott Valley Feed neared the half-century mark in 1989, Carl and Tory turned the reins over to son Benny. He and Kathy have again expanded the nursery to a full garden center and are waiting to serve you.

A long standing car show event in Weed and one of Siskiyou County’s favorites and it keeps growing. It has become a very popular event since we put it in Bel Air Park in Weed. The park setting is inviting and a cool place to be. The Community Pool is available to everyone on Saturday, and there is usually live music or a DJ playing 50’s through 80’s music to keep the rhythm going. There are vendors for food and the COS College Craft Fair share a part of the venue. There is always something for the car buffs and their families to participate in!
