How Do You Get to Castle Lake?

Visitors can both hike and drive to Castle Lake. Driving access is via the paved Castle Lake Road starting in the town of Mt. Shasta. The road is not always open so be sure to check the latest conditions (see below).

How Long is Castle Lake Hike?

The Castle Lake Trail is 10.6 miles long out-and-back. The hike is considered slightly challenging, but is still a very popular trail. Year after year, the Castle Lake Trail draws more visitors than any other route in the area, and for good reason.

The Castle Lake Trail serves as a great introduction to the Trinity Alps and Mt. Shasta area. It is also a great day experience when taken in tandem with a hike up to Heart Lake that originates at Castle Lake.

Can You Fish in Castle Lake?

This north-facing cirque has easy access to North, West, and East-facing aspects allowing skiable terrain to be found in most snow conditions. When the lake is frozen, which is much of the winter, it is very easy to do laps that start and end at your car with the ability of doing over 1000 vertical feet in one run! The wide variety of terrain also means that there is almost always avalanche danger in the area.

The type of fish you’ll find in Castle Lake are gold shiners, brook and rainbow trout. Castle Lake has never been stocked. All trout are produced wild. The best baits to use are salmon eggs, roe, mini-crawlers, red worms and bright-colored power bait. Ice fishing during the winter is also very popular.

Camping Near Castle Lake

Approximately ¼ mile below Castle Lake you will find Castle Lake Campground. This small campground offers 6 sites with tables, fire rings and vault toilets, nestled in a thick mixed conifer forest. Bring your own water. There is no fee or reservations, but there is a 3-night limit.

Typically campground opens around the end of May and closes the first of November, depending on snowfalls and melts. Visit Castle Lake Campground website for more details and to see if it’s open.

Since Castle Lake can be prone to varying weather conditions, especially during winter, it is always recommended to check with the Mt. Shasta Forest Service Ranger office before visiting. Fort Jones

Fort Jones, also known as the Gateway to the Marble Mountains, is a tight-knit community with historical charm, making it the perfect stop to explore Northern California and feel like a local.

• M5 — Five Marys Burgerhouse
  Operating with a guiding philosophy of “Great food, great cocktails, and great company,” M5 is everyone’s favorite burger spot in Fort Jones, and it’s easy to see why. This restaurant is run by the Heffernan family, and all of their meat is raised to the highest standards right down the road, at their family ranch. They ensure that every dish is made with the best possible quality of ingredients, and as a result, you can taste the difference. Stop by for one of Mary’s famous Sidecars at the bar or a juicy burger and consider taking a some of their meat cuts home from the cooler cases or their farm store where they pack and ship all of their farm raised products. If you can make it on a Friday night, you’ll also be treated to some live music with your meal on their charming outdoor patio and grass lawn.
• Fort Jones Museum
  Step back in time at the Fort Jones Museum, where you can learn about the area’s rich history. The museum features exhibits on Native American culture, the Gold Rush, and early pioneer life. It’s a fascinating stop for history enthusiasts and provides a deep insight into this area’s colorful past.

• Fort Jones Trading Post
  Grab your caffeine boost and prepare to face the day with a stop at Fort Jones Trading Post, Fort Jones’ favorite local coffee shop and cafe. Their menu has a number of options for every palate, and each drink is handcrafted using locally-roasted espresso. It’s a great grab-and-go spot for lunch, too, as they also offer sandwiches, ice cream and more.

• Jones Beach
  For a bit of relaxation, head to Jones Beach, a serene spot tucked right by the Scott River. It’s perfect for picnicking, swimming or simply taking in the natural beauty of the area. Only a 20-minute drive from Fort Jones proper, the beach is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of Fort Jones.

Etna

While the city of Etna may be small, it has a lot to offer for anyone visiting the West Siskiyou region.

• Etna Summit
  If you’re cut from an adventurous cloth, you’ll love a day spent hiking Etna Summit, a popular starting point for hiking and exploring the rugged wilderness of the Klamath National Forest. The views from the summit are breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the valley below and the surrounding mountains. This hike is considered intermediate to difficult, so be sure you and your group are physically prepared for a somewhat challenging hike. This is also a crossroads of the Pacific Crest Trail and thru hikers often stop off here and make their way down to Etna, a favorite trail town for a filling meal and resupply on gear and trail essentials.

• Denny Bar Co
  Denny Bar Co is a distillery, restaurant and bar all rolled into one — and the only one of its kind in the area. This unique, elevated eatery produces a wide range of craft spirits, including whiskey, gin and vodka, all made at their on-site distillery, which you can also tour for free on your visit. The restaurant offers a menu of locally sourced dishes that pair perfectly with their drinks, making it a must-visit spot for any food and drink enthusiasts.
• Historic Avery Theatre
  Donated to the City of Etna by the Avery family, The Historic Avery Theatre is a beautifully restored venue that acts as the cultural hub for Etna. This theatre hosts a variety of performances, from live music to community theater. Keep an eye on their events calendar to see what’s on during your visit!
• Etna Brewing Company
  Calling all beer lovers: if you’re going to add one thing to your itinerary, make it Etna Brewing Company. • Johnson-Joss Memorial Park – Also known as Etna Park by locals
  You will hear this called Etna park by locals but the official name is Johnson-Joss Memorial Park is a lovely spot for a picnic or a leisurely stroll. The park features playgrounds, picnic areas and plenty of open space for activities. It’s a favorite spot for families and offers a peaceful setting to unwind. The park is a popular camp spot for PCT thru hikers because of its affordable price and proximity to town and hosts annual events like the Scott Valley Bluegrass festival under its many shade trees.

• Russian Wilderness
  Located about a half hour outside of Etna proper, The Russian Wilderness is a pristine natural area perfect for eager explorers. It offers over 100 hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging backcountry routes. The wilderness area is known for its stunning landscapes, including alpine lakes, dense forests and sweeping mountain peaks.
• Farmhouse Bakery
  For a taste of local flavor, stop by the Farmhouse Bakery. This charming bakery offers a range of homemade breads, pastries, and other baked goods, all made from scratch using local ingredients. It’s a delightful place to grab a coffee and a treat.

It’s a great choice for those looking to experience a piece of local history, as its building was initially occupied by Hallie Morse Daggett, the first female fire lookout ever employed by the U.S. Forest Service.

Callahan

Round out your escape to Scott Valley with a stop in Callahan, the third town making up this dynamic trifecta of places to adventure.

McCloud River Waterfalls Trail & McCloud Falls (Lower, Middle, Upper)

Whether you’re hiking or biking, you’ll find local flora, animals and stunning views. Dogs are also welcome on the trails, as long as they are leashed.

McCloud Reservoir

Once the weather turns warm, the best way to beat the heat is with a visit to the McCloud Reservoir, where you can swim, kayak, fish and explore to your heart’s content. This is a great spot for families, in particular — kids will love a chance to splash around in the shallows as parents unwind on the sandy banks.

South Gate Meadows Trail

For more experienced hikers, the South Gate trail takes you right up the side of Mt. Shasta, and is one of the only maintained trails on the mountain itself. While this is a more difficult hike, it’s worth the extra effort — you’ll follow multiple spring-fed creeks as you make your way up the mountain, and your reward is absolutely breathtaking views of both the mountain and of the valley below you.

A Quick Drive Away

Due to its proximity to Mt. Shasta, McCloud is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for that quiet, small-town experience, while still wanting to make the most out of your Siskiyou stay. Particularly in the snowier months, you’ll find plenty to do a stone’s throw from McCloud. Enjoy sledding at Snowman’s Hill, for instance, or spend your stay zipping down the mountain at Mt. Head to this park just next to the College of the Siskiyous and explore 7 acres worth of beautiful open space. Dogs are allowed on leashes, and for the competitive types, there are bocce ball and horseshoe courts.

Pluto’s Cave

Explore an ancient lava tube on this fairly easy out-and-back hike into Pluto’s Cave. This centuries-old cave was formed by lava erosion, and as a result, the rock formations you can explore are unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Bear Trail

Circling the perimeter of the College of the Siskiyous, this 2.1-mile trail is a great way to soak in some views of Mount Shasta while surrounded by sweeping forest.

Exploring Local Culture, History and Recreation

Weed might be small — but its cultural scene is mighty. Along the historic downtown, you’ll find plenty to explore, whether you’re interested in discovering some local history or you’re just looking to unwind over a few rounds of golf.

Cedar Lanes Bowling Alley

This locally-owned spot for bowling, food and drinks is the perfect way to spend an evening relaxing after exploring the outdoors. Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum

Before it was the charming town we know and love today, Weed was founded as a lumber milling town by Abner Weed — and though a name change has been proposed a few times throughout the town’s history, the locals would have none of it. Head to the Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum to learn the fascinating history of Weed, and all the incredible people who made it what it is today.

Weed Golf Club & Lake Shastina Golf Resort

Once the weather starts to warm up, there are few better ways to spend an afternoon than wandering a golf course surrounded by stunning mountain views. Living Memorial Sculpture Garden

This 136-acre art installation created in 1988 honors the brave sacrifices of those who have lost their lives in war. The trees stand as a living tribute to those who have died, while the sculpture garden provides a serene place for visitors to reflect and marvel at the beauty and artistry that has gone into creating this work of art.

Hunter Orchards Pumpkin Patch

What fall day in Siskiyou is complete without a little pumpkin spice and a visit to northernmost California’s original U-Pick pumpkin patch at Hunter Orchards.  Located at 14431 Old Westside Rd, in Grenada, this farm has acres and acres of pumpkins to choose from in all sizes and shapes. Lots of varieties of winter squash, a hay maze for the kids, apples, pears, fresh cider, jam, and fall holiday decorations for sale. Open daily in the month of October, 10 am to 6 pm. Food trucks and Live music will be on site Saturdays. Check back in the events calendar for updates.

McCloud Halloween Pub Crawl

Leaf peeping and bar hopping go hand and hand, right? Join a group of 21+ adults in costume on Oct 25th for a stroll through historic McCloud, stopping at all of the local watering holes for some Siskiyou craft brews and cocktails. Goblins and Ghouls should meet up on Main Street in downtown McCloud at 4pm.

Trick or Treating

A handful of communities around Siskiyou are host to annual trick-or-treating events for kids. Weed’s historic district will transform into a Trunk-or-Treat  and businesses on Yreka’s Miner Street will be handing out candy on Halloween from 2- 5pm. Don’t Cause Fires

As Smokey Bear says, “Only you can prevent wildfires.” Being a smart and safe traveler includes  knowledge of simple prevention practices: Maintain your equipment and vehicle – if you’re towing, triple check that you aren’t dragging any chains. • InciWeb is a web based interagency source for wildfire information that is provided by the US Forest Service.
• Air Now is a useful resource for current smoke and air quality reporting.

• Monitor incident maps, including live lookout cameras from ALERT California.

• Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Services provides emergency event information as well as evacuation statuses.
• Follow the Klamath National Forest and Shasta-Trinity National Forest on Facebook before your trip so you are more likely to be in the know of any risk or closures.

Be flexible with your plans and research alternative lodging options in the event that fire or smoke alter your experience. Hedge Creek Falls

Nature lovers of all ages will appreciate the beauty of Hedge Creek Falls, and the best part? It’s a simple, short hike. Accessible via an easy trail, this hidden waterfall cascades into a cavern behind it, creating a unique and enchanting experience. The trailhead is conveniently located near the I-5 highway, making it an easy stop along your way into town. You’ll also be able to hike to a platform that hangs over the Sacramento River, providing you with a stunning view of Mount Shasta.

Dunsmuir City Park & Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens

Although the phrase “city park” might call to mind images of modest playgrounds and picnic tables, Dunsmuir City Park has far more to offer. With over 14 acres of scenic areas to explore, this park, which runs adjacent to the Sacramento River, is a great place to take any sized gathering, whether you’re looking to enjoy some fresh air with a partner or you’re planning a family reunion. Located within the city park are the verdant Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, which account for about 10 acres of the park’s total area. In the warmer months, you’ll find stunning native plants and flowers growing along the river trails, making this a perfect spot to snap some photos.

Castle Crags

Open year-round, this 170-million-year-old landmark is accessible from a few different points. Head up the Vista Point trail, a fairly easy hike that most are able to navigate, to see these stunning rock formations as well as an epic view of Mount Shasta. Or, for a more challenging hike, you can follow Crags Trail, which takes you right to the base of the towering Castle Dome.

Ted Fay Fly Shop

With such easy access to the Upper Sacramento River, you’d be missing out if you didn’t plan to spend an afternoon catching a fish or two for lunch. Head to Ted Fay Fly Shop to make sure you have everything you need — since 1950, this friendly, full-service destination shop has been providing downtown Dunsmuir with all its fishing needs. Once you’ve picked up all the fishing essentials, spend an afternoon trying to snag a Rainbow Trout, which swim in abundance through easily fishable areas of the Upper Sac River.

There’s plenty to find in the heart of Dunsmuir, whether you’re looking to attend some local events or simply to stroll through this historic town and absorb the small-town charm infused in every shop.

Farmers’ Market & Public Art

Starting in July, the Dunsmuir Farmers’ Market happens every Thursday evening. You can stroll dozens of stalls showcasing Dunsmuir’s finest local artisans and producers, and purchase everything from fresh vegetables to handmade jewelry. Dunsmuir also boasts a thriving local art scene, with several beautiful murals decorating downtown’s historic brick buildings. Healing Waters

Lake Siskiyou, with its clear waters, is a serene spot for fishing, swimming, boating and recreation. Majestic Mt. Shasta lies as the backdrop for this tranquil and picturesque location. Siskiyou is also home to many majestic waterfalls that offer visitors a place for peace and healing. Legends and Lore

Alien mysteries and mythical creatures are sprinkled into the legendary tales of Siskiyou’s locals and visitors. People have reported sightings of mysterious beings and strange lights around Mt Shasta. (1) Many think these are Lemurians, ancient beings of a lost continent that have taken refuge within the mountain. A beautiful mountain lake tucked at the foot of Mt. Shasta, Lake Siskiyou enjoys panoramic views of the mountain, lots of shoreline and a forested setting. There is a multi-use trail around the lake and several access points that make the lake a recreational jewel for paddlers, swimmers, boaters and day use year-round. Boat rentals, marinas and ramps are available on the lake during summer months, though summer weekends can get crowded. Camping is available. Summer also sees a kids inflatable Splash Zone through Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort.

Fishermen will find a variety of fish including lake trout, brook trout, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout and brown trout here. Whether you’re trolling, spinning, fly fishing or bait-casting your chances of getting a bite in Lake Siskiyou are good. Are Dogs Allowed at Lake Siskiyou?

Yes! Dogs are allowed at Lake Siskiyou as long as they are kept on a leash no longer than 6-feet at all times all around the lake, except when in your vehicle.

Can You Swim at Lake Siskiyou?

Swimming is allowed in Lake Siskiyou. It’s safe, clean, clear waters sit comfortably around 70 degrees in summer and are ideal for a dip. A few of the best places to swim are the roped off swim area and the inflatable kids “Splash Zone” waterpark by Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort.

Can You Kayak at Lake Siskiyou?

Lake Siskiyou is a great place to kayak! Spanning 430 acres, with breathtaking views of Mt. Shasta, there’s plenty of water to paddle around and explore. Kayak rentals can be found right on the lake. Overall, Lake Siskiyou is one of the best places to kayak in Siskiyou County.

What about Boats?

There are no motorized boats allowed on Lake Siskiyou.

How Long is the Walk Around Lake Siskiyou?

The Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop is 6.5 miles long. The trail is a flat, quiet route that goes around the entire lake. It is considered easy and takes an average of two and half hours to complete walking. The trail is open year round, however the bridges where the Sacramento River enters the lake are typically removed for winter in October and reinstalled in May or June, cutting off the loop during that time.

Hit the Slopes

Mt. Shasta is often referred to as Siskiyou’s crown jewel, and for good reason. This majestic giant surveys nearly all of Siskiyou County. In the winter months, it becomes one of the best spots to get some great skiing or snowboarding runs in, regardless of skill level. Head to Mt. Shasta Ski Park to traverse the park’s over 400 acres of skiable terrain. You can take lessons from the experts before zipping down the mountain, and all ages are welcome, so it’s a great stop for anyone traveling with the family. Or, head to the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center, where you’ll find access to over a dozen ski trails and a cozy base area for unwinding afterward.

If you’re feeling a little more adventurous — and you’re confident on a pair of skis — you can also venture further into Siskiyou’s beautiful natural landscape and try your hand at backcountry skiing. While we don’t recommend this for beginners, it can be a great way to explore Mt. Shasta, provided you follow all safety precautions. Bunny Flat Trail provides backcountry adventurers a chance to forge out into the surrounding wilderness of the mountain, where you’re sure to find breathtaking views and a truly unforgettable experience. For a gentler ski experience that still allows you to escape into nature, you can also head to Sand Flat Trail for prime cross-country skiing trails.

Totally Tubular! Snow Tubing & Sledding Opportunities

If you’re a little intimidated by the prospect of tackling the mountain slopes, no problem! There are plenty of places to get the same thrilling rush of flying down a snowy hill without having to strap into a board. In addition to its numerous skiing and snowboarding slopes, Mt. Shasta Ski Park boasts a large snow tubing hill, perfect for kids, adults and everyone in between. Or, for a BYOS (bring your own sled, of course!) experience, head to Snowman’s Hill, a designated sledding hill that offers sledders 300 feet of fast-paced downhill thrills.

Snowmobiling

Another great way to experience Siskiyou’s wild backcountry is atop a snowmobile. Snowmobilers can choose from one of three interconnected snowmobiling parks, each with warming huts, restrooms, designated parking areas and both groomed and ungroomed snowmobiling trails. At Deer Mountain Snowmobiling Park you’ll find everything you need for your snowmobiling adventure, including rentals, guided lessons and more, courtesy of Fun Factory Snowmobiling. Pilgrim Creek Snowmobiling Park and Doorknob Warming Hut Snow Park both offer hundreds of miles of adventurous trails to embark on as well.

‘Tis the Season

You can’t help but fall a little in love with the holidays if you’re spending them in Siskiyou. Get into the holiday spirit with some festive activities, like ice skating at Shastice Park. Take in the winter scenery at this fully outdoor ice rink, which welcomes skaters of all ages and experience levels.

Instead of buying a Christmas tree, start a new holiday tradition this year and head out into the snow-covered forests of Siskiyou to find your tree. Christmas tree cutting permits are available all December, and an afternoon spent searching for your perfect tree will be sure to make this holiday a standout. Even if you aren’t planning to take a Christmas tree home, it’s worth putting on your warmest winter boots and hiking some of Siskiyou’s best trails. In the winter, Lake Siskiyou might be too cold to swim in — but the views you’ll find along the trail loop make it a must-stop. Hedge Creek Falls or the McCloud Falls, both beginner-friendly waterfall hikes, are also excellent (and Instagrammable!) trails to wander in the colder months.

So stop resisting and plan your next getaway to East Siskiyou, home of fascinating wildlife refuges, accommodating lodging sites, historical museums, and plenty of fun and thrilling activities.

There are a number of towns that comprise East Siskiyou. We’ve highlighted two below – Dorris and Tulelake – both of which offer year-round enjoyment, natural wonders, and important historic moments sure to have visitors both fascinated and contemplative.

DORRIS

The town of Dorris may be small in size, but it makes up for it in big ways. The first city you’ll enter in California when traveling south on Highway 97 from the Oregon border, Dorris was at once the holder of the title “America’s Tallest Flagpole.” In honor of all veterans and active military personnel, the Dorris Lions Club arranged to have a 30-by-60-foot American flag perched on top of a 200-foot pole in 1996, thereby giving the small town a huge record to boast about. Although a Wisconsin insurance company has since taken its place atop the list, the Dorris pole still provides a sense of pride and is a big draw on July 4 and Veterans Day, when the massive 150-pound American flag is lifted.

The Butte Valley Wildlife Area in Dorris is a birdwatcher’s dream. In addition to being an ideal spot for finding a variety of waterfowl, bald eagles and sandhill cranes, it is known for its share of raptors, specifically the Swainson’s Hawk. This particular hawk migrates 12,000 miles each year between the Butte Valley area and Argentina, one of the longest journeys for any raptor. The hawks normally begin arriving in California in February and March and leave anywhere between September and October.

The Butte Valley National Grassland is home to a wide assortment of animals, from lizards and snakes to bobcats and Roosevelt elk. Its official “National Grassland” designation four decades ago provided protection from disposal and destructive uses, and it is now being enhanced primarily for natural use.

Although Juanita Lake is available year-round for trout, catfish and bass fishing, the campground facility is open from approximately April/May to October. Motorless boats, such as canoes and rowboats, are allowed on the 55-acre lake, and a 1.5-mile paved, barrier-free trail circles the lake. Grills, water and picnic accommodations are available at no charge.

Dorris is home to some memorable restaurants serving up small-town hospitality and plenty of local flavors. Among them is El Ranchito, a family-owned Mexican food restaurant located right off of Highway 97. With everything made from scratch, you’ll want to try dishes like the made-to-order burritos or a delicious enchilada plate. You really can’t go wrong, no matter what you choose.

When you’re ready to rest your tired feet or enjoy a good night’s sleep, you’ll find a variety of locations sure to fit any budget. Try the Butte Valley RV Park or the Butte Valley Bed and Breakfast, or book a stay at the Golden Eagle Motel, a three-star motel that’s convenient to the flagpole, city hall and parks. Comfortable rooms, free breakfast and Wi-Fi, microwaves and more make this an ideal resting spot at an affordable price.

TULELAKE

Just four miles from the Oregon border is Tulelake, a small Siskiyou County literally built by veterans, as a land lottery was held after World War II. Veterans won 80- and 160-acre plots to prepare for farm land to grow potatoes, onions, grain and other important foods. The area attracted a number of businesses and farm services, as well as families, and Tulelake grew into the successful agricultural community it’s become today.

Nature and history play a large part in drawing visitors to Tulelake. The Lava Beds National Monument combines both attractions in one. Lava tube caves were created by flows of smooth lava between 10,500 and 65,000 years ago, and eruptions on the Medicine Lake shield volcano created rugged landscapes. Developed caves, available for hikers, vary in the level of difficulty, from least to most challenging, so there’s amazing sights ideal for the whole family.

Years ago, the Klamath Basin featured thousands of acres of shallow lakes and freshwater marshes, attracting millions of waterfowl and other water birds. In 1905, the government chose to convert many of these wetlands into agricultural lands. Several years later, President Theodore Roosevelt established the first in a series of national wildlife refuges to conserve the wetlands which remained, resulting in the Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge, the first such area in the U.S.

A new visitor center recently opened at the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge. It features self-guided tours, trails that provide beautiful views of the refuge, and a look at the variety of wildlife that makes these places so special.

Any adventurer worth his or her salt would tell you that hiking is the best way to see the countryside and all of its beauty. Fortunately East Siskiyou has an excellent share of adventurous trails to see the land closeup.

The Glass Mountain Trail is one such pathway. Beginning and ending near Tulelake, the moderately challenging 4.9-mile route is excellent for birding, hiking and walking. The views of the sparkling selenite crystals on slopes and mesas are unique, and panoramic views of the Sierra and White mountains are jaw-dropping.

A short but rugged pathway, Captain Jack’s Stronghold Trail is split into two self-guided interpretive routes that tell the history of the Modoc War of 1872-73. Captain Jack (Kintpuash) and his small, yet savvy band of Modoc Indians, held off U.S. Army forces for five months, despite being woefully outnumbered. See rock art and archeological sites that make for a truly unique adventure.

For some travelers, finding the ideal golf course is as much of an adventure as hiking along the area’s trails. Indian Point Golf Course in Tulelake combines the fun and strategy of the game of golf with spectacular views of the Klamath Basin and other landmarks. The 1,500-plus-yard golf course offers nine holes, with both beginning and challenging pathways to accommodate any golfer’s game.

Nearly 120 years ago, Spanish philosopher George Santayana spoke one of history’s most famous and consequential phrases: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”

The expression has been repeated millions of times, and is appropriate when visiting the Tule Lake National Monument and its place in history. Included at the monument is the Tule Lake Segregation Center, a large facility where Japanese Americans were incarcerated during World War II in the early 1940s. Also featured is Camp Tulelake, originally a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that was converted to an additional detention facility for Japanese Americans, and finally a camp that housed German prisoners of war in the mid 1940s. The Visitor Center is typically open from Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day Weekend, and ranger-guided tours may be available, although reserving a tour is recommended.

GOOD NIGHTS

With all that Tulelake has to offer, you’ll want a place to settle in for the night, and the Winema Historic Lodge is an excellent choice. Popular with birders, duck hunters, large family groups and scout troops, the lodge offers motel and large lodge rooms with multiple beds and excellent accommodations.

Over the years, friends and family from urban and rural areas have spent time with me in Siskiyou County, and before writing this post, I took a very informal poll of my friends and asked:

What would have been helpful to know about Siskiyou County before planning your trip?

Below are the tips that came from my conversations:

Lodging

Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget and needs. For example, my mom loves staying at hotels in Siskiyou with a breakfast option. I enjoyed my experience at The McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Whereas one of my girlfriends, who lives in San Francisco, adored her long weekend at the Mt. Shasta Resort. It’s next to Lake Siskiyou, and she enjoyed being near the water.

PRO-TIP: When you narrow down your lodging options, don’t be afraid to call the property. Local employees can help you determine if their establishment is a good fit for your needs, and offer tips for things to see and do in the area.

Internet Access

Siskiyou County is geographically diverse and large; to give you a sense of scale it’s roughly the size of Massachusetts and 60% of the land area is public forest land.

Depending on what area of the county you’re visiting—and what activities you do—the Internet could be slow, spotty, or nonexistent. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it’s the perfect place to unplug from email, social media, and work projects.

PRO-TIP: Tell your work colleagues, friends, and family that you’ll have limited Internet access while in Siskiyou. Create an out of office notification for your inbox, too.

Cell phone reception

Cell phone reception is adequate along Highway 5 and in the central part of the county. However, in the far east and west parts of Siskiyou reception can be spotty.

PRO-TIP: Buy a paper map of the area. If you need a cell phone connection in the great outdoors, consider looking into satellite options.

Driving conditions

No matter what time of year you visit Siskiyou, stay abreast of driving conditions. In the winter, you’ll experience rain, snow, and wind in various parts of the county, so carry chains in your car. During the summer season, you might encounter smoke from wildfires, and just like winter, it’s essential to stay updated on road conditions.

PRO-TIP: The California Department of Transportation keeps their website updated with travel alerts. Before you embark on a road trip, check the site for updates.

Quirks of small-town life

Most small towns have unique quirks, and that’s what makes them fun. It also means business may or may not be open when you expect. For example, you won’t find much open after 9 pm in most towns in Siskiyou.

PRO-TIP: If a store, coffee shop, or restaurant is closed, use the opportunity to explore what’s nearby or ask a local for recommendations. I’ve done this in large cities like Paris, France and Portland, Oregon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Farm to Table

Siskiyou County is a rural region, so compared to large cities, there are aren’t as many dining choices. However, it is a rich agricultural area and you will find unique and delicious dining options in Siskiyou that source local food. For example, I love eating dinner at Denny Bar Co. in Etna. Also, Café Maddalena in Dunsmuir uses local ingredients, offers a seasonal menu, and daily specials. And don’t forget to check out California Heritage Farms! They have a U-pick berry patch with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers that’s open from June to October seven days a week.

If you’re in need of a snack or coffee or both, check out Zephyr Books & Coffee in Yreka. Zephyr serves Northbound Coffee—that’s roasted in Mt. Shasta—plus homemade scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more.

PRO-TIP: Make reservations, and look for unique farm-to-table dining opportunities in Siskiyou. Also, use Google Maps to locate restaurants, ask locals for tips, and your hotel for restaurant recommendations.

There’s plenty to do in Mount Shasta

The beauty of Siskiyou, California’s northernmost region, is a sight to behold any time of the year. Visiting Mount Shasta, the second-highest peak in the Cascades, makes your trip to Siskiyou even better given the wide variety of activities available around the mountain, not to mention its spectacular view.

If you plan a vacation during the winter, you’ll find plenty of spots to ice skate, ski, snowboard and ice fish, just to name a few ideas. The magic of spring brings flowers of every color and an abundance of ways to explore Mount Shasta, such as on foot, by car or with the assistance of a tour guide.

Summertime means getting in and on the water, including Lake Siskiyou. The lake, located at the foot of Mount Shasta, offers plenty of trails that are ideal for sightseeing, as well as excellent conditions for boating, swimming, paddling and all sorts of water sports. And the yellow, orange, rose and burgundy colors of the trees in autumn, especially with a backdrop of Mount Shasta, provide a spectacular vision you’ll never forget. Whether you enjoy the view by hiking, biking or simply strolling around, the sights are breathtaking.

Here are a few ideas for your first (or return) trip to majestic Mount Shasta and Siskiyou, the crown jewel of northern California.

LAKE SISKIYOU

Located about 2 miles from Mount Shasta is Lake Siskiyou, which offers plenty of shoreline and a trail around the lake with several access points for boaters, swimmers and others year-round.

Whether you like to camp, glamp or something in between, there are plenty of opportunities. Located right on the lake is Lake Siskiyou Resort Camp, a beautiful getaway surrounded by tall Douglas firs, pines and cedar trees. From tent camping to spacious houses, there’s a lodging choice that’s perfect for you. Kayaking, fishing, paddleboarding, walking the 6.5-mile long trail around the lake and more is available to you. During the summer, a waterpark of large inflatables is pure fun for all ages. Make sure to bring a blanket no matter what time of year you arrive, because when the sun goes down, the stars come out like you’ve never seen before.

MOUNT SHASTA RESORT

A HIKER’S PARADISE

The Siskiyou area is known for its outdoor recreational activities, and hiking is at the top of most adventurer’s list.

You’ll find beautiful alpine meadows and spectacular views along the Clear Creek Trail, a 5.7-mile route that leads to a popular spot where a view of Mud Creek Falls is possible. Although the view is from a mile away, the falls are so massive, their beauty can still be seen from that distance. For those who want a closer view, there is a cross-country route from the end of the trail.

For a shorter, yet beautiful journey, Heart Lake Trail is a 2-mile moderate trail that leads to a bench on top of Castle Lake. Above Castle Lake is Heart Lake, surrounded by rocky cliffs. What makes this trail even more incredible is the view of Mount Shasta from the lake. On a clear, calm day, the sight of the mountains reflected in the lake will have you in awe. Bunny Flat Trail is another popular and fairly easy journey when the weather is warm, and a perfect location for snowshoeing in the winter. The road is the main access point for all winter activities, so the road to Bunny Flat is always plowed.

Sisson Meadow is a popular spot for visitors to take in the views and nature of this wetland. The 7.5-acre area offers plenty of wildlife and plants, as well as places to sit and public installation art. Views of Mount Shasta, Mount Eddy, Black Butte and Castle Spire are possible from this location.

Gateway Trail offers visitors access to the forest directly from the town. Only a mile or so ahead of Mount Shasta High School, this shared-use trail is popular with bikers, hikers and even equestrians, providing trail explorers of all kinds with nearly 10 miles of paths to discover.

Celebrating its 40^th anniversary in 2023, the Mount Shasta Sisson Museum offers a look at the past, present and future of the Mount Shasta region. Exhibits showcasing the history and science related to Mount Shasta and the surrounding areas have been seen by more than 500,000 visitors. The museum shares the property with the oldest fish hatchery in operation west of the Mississippi River. The hatchery opened in 1888.

From November through April, have fun on the Shastice Park outdoor ice rink. The park, located in the northeastern part of Mount Shasta, is perfect for getting your steps in, and dogs are allowed as well. Then head to Snowman’s Hill for a thrilling sledding adventure. Located between Interstate 5 and McCloud, the hill is at the high point of the roadway. For more winter fun, visit the Mount Shasta Nordic Center, a nonprofit organization that provides groomed cross-country ski trails, a snowshoe trail as well as a warming hut, ski rentals, lessons and more.

Siskiyou is home to numerous food and drink establishments, most of them independent and some family-owned. Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, located in Mount Shasta, offers a variety of comfort food and seasonal dishes, as well as craft beer and wine. Yaks on the 5 in Mount Shasta offers mouthwatering gourmet burgers, salads and microbrews, and don’t leave without trying a house-roasted coffee or handcrafted pastry. There are a variety of restaurants throughout the area, so make sure to try a few.

Mount Shasta is not just another pretty place. It’s also known for its healing arts – it is a sister mountain to Mount Fuji in Japan after all. Crystals play an important part of Mount Shasta’s allure, and there are numerous shops that offer them. According to local spiritual guides, it’s important to cleanse your crystal to clear away all the energy of the many hands that touched it. Hedge Creek Falls, which is a short drive away in Dunsmuir, and Sacramento Headwaters are among the locations with healing properties.

There’s so much to see and do in Siskiyou throughout the year; we’ve only scratched the surface in this blog. Make plans to visit for a few days, a week or longer to really understand why this region is so loved. Over the years, friends and family from urban and rural areas have spent time with me in Siskiyou County, and before writing this post, I took a very informal poll of my friends and asked:

What would have been helpful to know about Siskiyou County before planning your trip?

Below are the tips that came from my conversations:

Lodging

Where you choose to stay will depend on your budget and needs. For example, my mom loves staying at hotels in Siskiyou with a breakfast option. I enjoyed my experience at The McCloud Mercantile Hotel. Whereas one of my girlfriends, who lives in San Francisco, adored her long weekend at the Mt. Shasta Resort. It’s next to Lake Siskiyou, and she enjoyed being near the water.

PRO-TIP: When you narrow down your lodging options, don’t be afraid to call the property. Local employees can help you determine if their establishment is a good fit for your needs, and offer tips for things to see and do in the area.

Internet Access

Siskiyou County is geographically diverse and large; to give you a sense of scale it’s roughly the size of Massachusetts and 60% of the land area is public forest land.

Depending on what area of the county you’re visiting—and what activities you do—the Internet could be slow, spotty, or nonexistent. And, I don’t think that’s a bad thing because it’s the perfect place to unplug from email, social media, and work projects.

PRO-TIP: Tell your work colleagues, friends, and family that you’ll have limited Internet access while in Siskiyou. Create an out of office notification for your inbox, too.

Cell phone reception

Cell phone reception is adequate along Highway 5 and in the central part of the county. However, in the far east and west parts of Siskiyou reception can be spotty.

PRO-TIP: Buy a paper map of the area. If you need a cell phone connection in the great outdoors, consider looking into satellite options.

Driving conditions

No matter what time of year you visit Siskiyou, stay abreast of driving conditions. In the winter, you’ll experience rain, snow, and wind in various parts of the county, so carry chains in your car. During the summer season, you might encounter smoke from wildfires, and just like winter, it’s essential to stay updated on road conditions.

PRO-TIP: The California Department of Transportation keeps their website updated with travel alerts. Before you embark on a road trip, check the site for updates.

Quirks of small-town life

Most small towns have unique quirks, and that’s what makes them fun. It also means business may or may not be open when you expect. For example, you won’t find much open after 9 pm in most towns in Siskiyou.

PRO-TIP: If a store, coffee shop, or restaurant is closed, use the opportunity to explore what’s nearby or ask a local for recommendations. I’ve done this in large cities like Paris, France and Portland, Oregon, and have been pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Farm to Table

Siskiyou County is a rural region, so compared to large cities, there are aren’t as many dining choices. However, it is a rich agricultural area and you will find unique and delicious dining options in Siskiyou that source local food. For example, I love eating dinner at Denny Bar Co. in Etna. Also, Café Maddalena in Dunsmuir uses local ingredients, offers a seasonal menu, and daily specials. And don’t forget to check out California Heritage Farms! They have a U-pick berry patch with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and flowers that’s open from June to October seven days a week.

If you’re in need of a snack or coffee or both, check out Zephyr Books & Coffee in Yreka. Zephyr serves Northbound Coffee—that’s roasted in Mt. Shasta—plus homemade scones, muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more.

PRO-TIP: Make reservations, and look for unique farm-to-table dining opportunities in Siskiyou. Also, use Google Maps to locate restaurants, ask locals for tips, and your hotel for restaurant recommendations.

  Stretching alongside five miles of both Yreka Creek and Greenhorn Creek, the Yreka Creek Greenway is both a great place for a stroll or bike ride, and serves the environment around it. Volunteers for the Greenway project are dedicated to restoring and maintaining the natural watersheds of Yreka and Greenhorn Creek, and as the Greenway expands, there are more and more opportunities to explore the trails surrounding these natural wonders.

  With easy proximity to tons of excellent biking trails, you’ll want to devote an afternoon to cruising around on a pair of wheels. Start your bike trip at Jefferson Bike Company, Yreka’s premier bike shop offering repairs, accessories, group rides and much more.

Yreka dates back to the 1850s, when it was established as a Gold Rush town. As a result, everywhere you go is steeped in local history and charm, from the attractions lining Historic Miner Street to more recent local businesses that have cemented themselves as instrumental to this town.

Pluto’s Cave, for instance, is an ancient lava tube that, nowadays, makes for a pretty fantastic hike. It’s a beginner-friendly, easy-in-and-out trail, so no worries if you and your partner aren’t up for something more challenging

Speaking of ancient lava formations — even in the winter time, the Lava Beds National Monument is a must-see in east Siskiyou. At this historic wonder, you can explore over 700 different caves, formed up to 65,000 years ago by lava flows. You’ll also find works of Native American rock art sites and an informative visitor’s center where you can learn about this natural marvel.

Delectable Dates

Once you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the region, we recommend heading back to your home away from home to refresh, reset and get a little dressed up. After all, doesn’t everyone love an excuse for a fancy dinner date? (Of course, finery isn’t a requirement — we’re pretty laid-back here.)

If you happen to be staying at the McCloud Hotel, then you’ll find Sage Restaurant a convenient date spot. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, the restaurant is worth a visit. This beautiful, intimate bistro-style restaurant represents the very best of California cuisine, utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients in each dish to create truly gourmet food.

Over in Yreka, The Wine Bar & Bistro makes for a great date night spot. Enjoy small bites, an excellent beer selection and of course, some really great wine. There’s so much to do throughout the beautiful Siskiyou region, you’ll need at least several days – if not a week or more – to explore this special place and all its beauty. Start planning some vacation time in California’s North, where you can celebrate Independence Day and so much more.

MOUNT SHASTA

Located midway between San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, the city of Mount Shasta sits at the foot of Mount Shasta, the beautiful mountain that is also the second-highest volcano in the continental U.S.

With an incredible view as its backdrop, the Mount Shasta Chamber of Commerce will present a 4^th of July celebration from July 3-6. After the street fair and live music on July 3, the Mount Shasta Fun Run and Walk kicks off at 8:30 a.m. on July 4, with events ranging from a 2-mile youth race to a 5-mile race that’s expected to draw approximately 1,000 runners. The races start at the corner of Castle and N. Mt. Shasta Blvd. in Downtown Mount Shasta.

The ”Shining Stars” 4^th of July Parade will begin its march along Mount Shasta Blvd. at noon, preceded by an Artisan Market and Street Fair at 10 a.m. Don’t miss the spectacular fireworks display at dusk. The street fair will continue on July 5-6, along with a variety of live music the whole family will enjoy.

Lake Siskiyou in Mount Shasta offers plenty of activities, starting with swimming, kayaking, fishing, boating, camping and walking along the 6.5-mile Lake Siskiyou Trail Loop around the lake, as well a prime spot to enjoy the panoramic views of Mount Shasta. Don’t leave without having some fun at Splash Zone, located at Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. The group of four inflatable floating “islands” feature slides, trampolines and high jump-off points for maximum enjoyment. Boats, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks and more are available to rent.

Many hikers and bikers who have visited the Siskiyou region quickly realize there may be no better place to go on an adventure, a prime reason being the alpine meadows and spectacular views. The 5.7-mile Clear Creek Trail leads to an excellent spot to see Mud Creek Falls, considered one of the most lovely falls in the area. Another journey can be taken along the 2-mile Heart Lake Trail, which leads to Castle Lake and Heart Lake and, if weather permits, a vision of the mountain reflected in the lake. For a truly relaxing time, head to Mount Shasta City Park, where you’ll find picnic areas, a playground and a nature trail the whole family will enjoy.

Mount Shasta is home to excellent restaurants and bars, such as Pipeline Craft Taps and Kitchen, which specializes in comfort food. Yaks on the 5 (which also has a location in Dunsmuir) features in incredible assortment of gourmet burgers to choose from, or start your day early with a breakfast sandwich or bakery item.

You’ll find a wonderful variety of fruits, vegetables and more at the Mount Shasta Farmers Market on Monday, June 30th and every Monday from 3:30-6 p.m. on E. Castle Street in downtown Mount Shasta.

MONTAGUE

The city of Montague has planned an action-packed holiday, as the Montague 4^th of July Freedom Festival will be held July 3 through 6th Featuring a massice civic fireworks display, carnival, local vendors, food and drink and more, will take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. July 4

Have fun at the carnival, held all three days, cheer the participants during rodeo events and dance to the music at concerts, held at various times during the festival. The Freedom Festival Car Show will ride into town from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, July 6 at Hoag Park in Montague.

SCOTT VALLEY

For active families, Kidder Creek Camp in Scott Valley will host the 2025 “Dirty Dash” this Fourth of July weekend. Bring the whole family and dash through an outdoor obstacle course and mud race. Choose between a 1.5K for kids up to age 12 or 5K race for teens and adults. Come out and have a blast while supporting Kidder Creek— you won’t want to miss it!  Register at www.kiddercreek.org

WHILE YOU’RE IN THE AREA …

There’s plenty to do and many places to visit throughout the Siskiyou region. Show your support for local businesses at area farmers’ markets, where you’ll find the freshest fruits, vegetables and other items. The farmers’ market in Weed is held each Wednesday from 3:30-6 p.m. through Oct. 25 at Bel Air Park. The certified farmers’ market in Yreka In Miner Street park on Friday’s from 4-6:30pm. through October. You can find the flavors of Etna each Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon through Sept. at the Etna Farmers’ Market, which takes places on N. Highway 3.

California is home to a number of beautiful waterfalls, and Siskiyou has several that are worth the walk. The trail to Hedge Creek Falls is less than a mile long, making this a must-see on your list of activities. A park off the Dunsmuir Ave. exit on Interstate 5 in Dunsmuir heads toward Mount Shasta and the 30- to 35-foot falls drop. But that’s just the beginning of your adventure, as the trail’s route leads to passage behind the waterfall. Continuing along Hedge Creek, the trail will take you to an observation deck high over where the creek and the Sacramento River meet. From the deck is a jaw-dropping view of Mount Shasta.

Not to be outdone, McCloud Falls in McCloud is home to three waterfalls, and thanks to the 4-mile round-trip McCloud River Falls Trail, you can get up close to each one of them. The well-maintained trail, which is considered easy to moderate, offers several spots where you can go for a swim, and a section of the trail is paved for wheelchairs.

Siskiyou offers an incredible number of adventures to go on, whether you do so by car, bike, boat or foot. Each town in the region has its own charm, so make sure to reserve enough time in one or more of the many lodging choices so that you can see it all.

Explore Native American History in Siskiyou

November is Native American History Month, a time to celebrate traditions, language and stories of the indigenous communities of this land. Native people have been traced to inhabit Northern California for over 10,000 years and have maintained a strong cultural identity in Siskiyou through much adversity over time.

The tribes that call Siskiyou home are the Karuk, Shasta, Modoc, and Yurok. The Karuk, which is one of California’s largest tribes is headquartered in Happy Camp, in West Siskiyou. Visitors can experience the cultural heritage of the Karuk thorough a collection of items at the People’s Center and Museum. In Yreka, check out the Native American Gallery in the Siskiyou County Museum, which explores the history and artistry of the Karuk and other local tribes.

Rain Rock Casino: Expansion and Destination Resort 

This month also announces an exciting addition to Siskiyou’s many lodging options. Yreka’s Rain Rock Casino, owned by the Karuk tribe, proudly completed a major expansion project. They nearly doubled the number of slot machines on the gaming floor to an expanded 6,000 square foot non-smoking area. Another exciting part of the project is the 43,000 square foot Rain Rock Casino Resort Hotel that, completed in November 2024, will comprise of 72 guest rooms and additional 8 cottage suites on the property. Five splash pools and soaking tubs, an outdoor fire pit, 4,000 square foot event center, gift shop, and May Yaj Asian Express Restuarant are some of the other new and exciting features. These additions will make Rain Rock a destination resort, and a must-see when visiting North Siskiyou. EAST

Butte Valley Museum

The Butte Valley Museum and Historical Society goals are to recognize, preserve, display and interpret the history of
Butte Valley in East Siskiyou. Located in Dorris, this museum offers the history of the Tulelake Basin and Butte Valley homesteads, military veterans, the Modoc Indian War and the Tule Lake Internment Camps.

WW II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Tule Lake Unit

The East Siskiyou town of Tulelake played a role in the WWII era as it was home to Japanese American Tule Lake Segregation Center and Camp Tulelake, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp that housed Japanese American internees. Later this location housed Italian and German Prisoners of War in the 1940s. Explore the grounds and learn about this history that is often left out of textbooks.

Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Established by President Roosevelt in 1908 as the nation’s first waterfowl refuge. The visitor center has a variety of exhibits, displays, brochures and wildlife-oriented programs. Refuge staff and volunteers are available to answer questions and help plan activities. Refuge wildlife is colorfully described by exhibits at the Visitor Center. Information regarding viewing opportunities, sightings, road conditions, and regulations is available.

Lava Beds National Monument

A uniquely natural and cultural site. Explore human history through Native American rock art and Modoc War sites, and the heritage of homesteaders, ranchers, cave explorers, “CCC boys,” and the modern Modoc and Klamath tribes. The monument is also known for scores of lava-tube caves and well-preserved young volcanic features. It lies on the flank of the Medicine Lake Volcano, which is the largest volcano by area in the Cascade Range.

NORTH

Siskiyou County Museum

Located in the county seat of Yreka, this museum educates on the history from pre-historic time to the earliest pioneer settlements. The Museum is an interpretive center for the history of the region and includes indoor and outdoor exhibits, programs, and a research library. There is machinery, early transportation vehicles, and both historic and recreated buildings on display.

Montague Railroad Depot Museum

The 1887 redwood building that was built in just five weeks as the town came to be, features many railroad and other artifacts from Montague and the Shasta Valley, including the station agent’s fully-furnished living quarters upstairs. The building served at the rail depot until the lines shut down in 1977 and was moved away from the tracks to its current location.

WEST

The People’s Center

The Cultural Center and Museum of the Karuk Tribe exhibits items representative of Karuk culture and history. Opened in Happy Camp in 2002, the Karuk People’s Center is a 5,000 square foot facility that includes an exhibition gallery, a gift shop, a Basketweaving classroom, a library, a collection’s storage area and the Karuk Language Program Office.

Fort Jones Museum

Fort Jones is the home of the self-proclaimed “biggest little museum” featuring a Shasta rain rock and an exterior of fossils, obsidian, and Native American stone tools. Be sure to take time to peruse the thousands of unique artifacts, photographs and geologic samples from the nearby area.

Etna Museum

The Museum of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eschscholtzia Parlor No. 112, is located in the first Town Hall of Etna, which also housed the fire department, library and jail, and was built to resemble Independence Hall in Philadelphia. This building was threatened by a fire when the Mason’s hall went ablaze next door in December 2023, but the Museum was saved along with all of the treasures inside.

SOUTH

Weed Historic Lumber Town Museum

The Weed Lumber Town Museum is a collection of artifacts and photographs of the people who founded and lived in Weed. Artifacts from the old lumber company store and from the company hospital are on display. Some rooms are decorated with original pieces to resemble a typical home from the early 1900s as well as a room dedicated to law enforcement with jail cell and booking area. Exhibits in the old courthouse feature the timber industry and life in early Weed and the life of Charlie Byrd, the first elected African American county sheriff in California.

Sisson Museum 

The Museum is located on ancestral lands of the Shasta and Wintu Tribes and stands today in a 1906 building on the grounds of the Mt Shasta Fish Hatchery. Established by Justin Sisson, one of the founding fathers of Mount Shasta. Permanent and changing exhibits display the history, culture, and geology of the Mount Shasta area.

Dunsmuir Railroad Depot Museum

Located in the former S.P.R.R. train and crew dispatchers’ office, the museum features much more than just railroad photographs and artifacts. Learn the story of Alexander Dunsmuir, a bit of town history, and check out the impressive Native American basket collection.

Heritage Junction Museum of McCloud

The Museum displays the logging and sawmill heritage of the town of McCloud and the surrounding area through artifacts, photographs and written materials.an impressive collection of artifacts from McCloud’s history, including the giant Corliss steam engine that powered the McCloud sawmill from 1903 until 1979. The museum also has a huge photographic collection covering the entire history of the town and its surrounding country.
