Beat the Winter Blues in Siskiyou

Traveling to Siskiyou in winter offers a unique experience that celebrates the natural beauty of the colder months with a variety of outdoor adventures and a cozy, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere. Here are several reasons why you should consider visiting Siskiyou during the winter months:

World- Class Winter Sports

Siskiyou is a fantastic destination for snow enthusiasts offering fun for folks at all levels. Whether it is downhill skiing or snowboarding at Mt Shasta Ski Park, Cross-Country Skiing or Snowshoeing at The Mt Shasta Nordic Center, or a backcountry adventure in the surrounding alpine areas, there is no shortage of opportunities to get out and enjoy the snow. Also, with fewer crowds than some of California’s more famous ski destinations, it’s a more peaceful and intimate experience. Spending a bluebird day skiing in Siskiyou is truly an epic experience!

Snow-Capped Views

The winter months provide a unique opportunity for winter photography and sightseeing. Snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, and clear blue skies make the destination even more picturesque. Take a scenic drive and explore the epic landscapes surrounding the majestic Mount Shasta. We recommend checking out the McCloud River Waterfalls, a breathtaking site, especially in the winter months!

Less-Crowded Atmosphere

Siskiyou offers a quieter and more laid-back atmosphere compared to some of the busier destinations in California. The serene beauty of the snow-covered trees and mountains provides an ideal backdrop for relaxation and recharging. Enjoy more solitude in nature, less crowded accommodations, and a more relaxed vibe.

Winter Hiking

If you’re not into skiing or snowboarding, there are still plenty of opportunities for outdoor exploration. Many trails around the region are open for winter hikes, offering beautiful views, quietude, and the chance to enjoy the stillness of nature. We particularly love McCloud Falls Trail, Lake Siskiyou South and North Shores, Yreka’s Greenhorn Park, and hiking around and exploring the caves at Lava Beds National Monument. If the weather is unfavorable in one part of Siskiyou, there is bound to be some sunshine to be found in our other regions!

Stargazing

Siskiyou is known for its dark skies and epic star-filled canopy. In winter especially, the days are shorter, offering more opportunities for viewing the cosmos in the endless darkness. That and the crisp mountain air makes for a truly wonderous evening. We have rounded up our top 5 Spots to View Siskiyou’s Starry Skies.

Make sure that you always do your research and plan ahead when exploring in the winter. Check conditions and accessibility beforehand as weather and road conditions can be variable this time of year.
