Tauhindauli Park Tour

At Dunsmuir Dogwood Daze, on Sunday morning May 3, Cheryl Petty guides a tour at Tauhindauli Park, a natural resource park at the location of the first settlement in Siskiyou County and the home of the Tauhindauli family of the Wintu tribe. The Upper Sacramento River winds through it attracting fishers and kayakers, dog walkers, runners and nature lovers.
Today’s tour points out numerous landmarks in the interesting history of this natural ford of the river for beaver hunters, settlers and gold rush miners following the Siskiyou trail. You’ll see Aunt Nel’s quaint car garage, a historic building at the site, and where a cable bridge stretched across the river for 19th century tourists to disembark trains and cross over the Upper Sacramento River to the Upper Soda Springs Resort. Friends of Tauhinauli have planted a native wildflower garden at the entrance, and gardening enthusiasts will enjoy seeing the methods used to establish this welcoming feature.
Dogwood Daze returns with family fun and cool activities. Gardening, art, music, treasure hunt, wine tasting, park tours…Just up the road in Dunsmuir. Contact the Chamber of Commerce for more information 5302352177 or email at hello@dunsmui.com.
For the two tours on Sunday, take the second Dunsmuir exit at the Chevron, turn onto Stagecoach Road and turn left onto Upper Soda Springs Road. We’ll meet at 9am for the first tour and at 10am for the second in the parking lot. Bring water, good shoes and a hat.
