A Winter Landscape Made More Accessible

Wintertime in Siskiyou is already pretty magical, but it gets even better when everyone can join in the fun. Thanks to a mix of local programs and adaptive offerings, visitors with all abilities can enjoy the snowy side of the Mount Shasta region without missing a beat.

Easy Access to Winter Gear

Regardless of ability, if you’re traveling light or trying something new, the SORA Equipment Lending Library is a friendly place to start. It offers well-maintained outdoor gear on a sliding scale or even no-cost basis, helping remove the barrier of buying specialized equipment just to get outside.

The goal is simple: make it easier for youth, veterans, and people with disabilities and limitations to take part in outdoor recreation. For winter visitors, that can mean access to snowshoes or Nordic skis, so you can explore snowy trails, try a new activity, or join a local program without the hassle of purchasing or bringing your own gear.

For folks with lower body disabilities, wanting to participate in Nordic skiing, the Mt Shasta Nordic Center has a first come first served sit-ski. This ski, also called a bi-ski has a bucket seat and shock absorbing suspension to handle bumps and terrain. The sit-ski is mobilized with the help of handheld poles providing a safe and stable ride with a low center of gravity. This adaptive option can make Nordic skiing an inclusive activity for wheelchair users and others wanting to experience the magic of the winter landscape.

Adaptive Skiing at Mt. Shasta Ski Park

Head up to Mt. Shasta Ski Park, and you’ll find adaptive lessons designed to make skiing and riding more inclusive and approachable. These lessons are arranged individually, so they can be tailored to different needs and comfort levels.

Meet with experienced and trained instructors on both regular ski equipment, or on one of their many bi-skis and navigate the slopes with customized support. For those that are independent and don’t need a lesson, adaptive ski equipment is free to use with purchase of a lift ticket. In an effort to make downhill skiing as accessible as possible, the Learning Center will work with each individual’s abilities and limitations and create a specialized experience. It’s a great option for visitors and locals who want to try downhill skiing in a way that feels safe, supported, and customized. Just reach out to the Mt Shasta Ski Park Learning Center ahead of time to set things up.

Why Visitors Love It

Winter in Siskiyou is all about fresh air, snowy views, and easy ways to get outside. Regardless of budget or ability, these programs make it possible to try winter sports without limits. With adaptive options that make participation easier for everyone, and experiences that are flexible, welcoming, and low-pressure, Siskiyou is a destination inviting all visitors to step into the winter scene and enjoy the snowy landscape at their own pace.
