A few years ago, my husband and I attended a fundraiser for the Yreka Women in Business Network. We drank wine, ate good food, chatted with friends, and we bid on a few silent auction items at the fundraiser. We came home with a beautiful basket filled with gardening tools, and an overnight stay at the McCloud Mercantile Inn in McCloud, CA.
When I called to book our room, I talked to Darlene Mathis; the co-owner of the Inn. She recommended that we visit McCloud in mid-September because we’d be able to attend the annual McCloud Mountain Bluegrass Festival. I’m so happy we listened to Darlene’s advice!
It was easy to walk to the music festival from the Inn, and we spent Saturday afternoon eating good food and listening to amazing tunes.
Other highlights from our trip to McCloud included:
— Discovering a giant book sculpture in Hoo Hoo Park. The statue is a 10-foot by 13-foot open book that features the work of Joaquin Miller; a northern California literary figure.
— Visiting local galleries that were filled with paintings, photography, glasswork, and more.
— Breakfast at the White Mountain Cafe. The cafe has a fun, 1930s vibe, and the food was delicious! I enjoyed the vegetarian egg scramble with potatoes, toast, and coffee.
We ended our trip with a leisurely hike along the McCloud River. The trail was quiet and seeing Lower and Middle McCloud Falls made the walk even more magical.
In short, our trip to McCloud was lovely. The weather was perfect, the locals were friendly, and I’m looking forward to attending the McCloud Mountain Bluegrass Festival, again.

Lodging: We stayed in a gorgeous suite at the McCloud Mercantile Inn. Large windows lined the room, and the natural light made the wood lined walls glow. Plus, the windows offered a beautiful view of Mount Shasta and old railway cars. Also, the Inn is in downtown McCloud, so it’s easy to walk to meals and other attractions.

Events: Plan your trip to McCloud around fun events like the annual McCloud Mountain Bluegrass Festival, the McCloud Motor the Mountain Car Show, the Apple Harvest Festival, or the McCloud Victorian Christmas.
