As the golden leaves of autumn give way to snow-draped peaks, Siskiyou transforms into a seasonal tapestry of color, contrast, and cozy charm. This region offers a rare opportunity to experience both fall and winter in a single visit. Here we feature some of our favorite fall-to-winter escapes so you can get the most of both seasons.
Low Elevation Adventures
At lower elevations fall lingers longer, painting the landscape in warm hues. These areas stay relatively snow-free into late fall, making them ideal for scenic drives, outdoor markets, and cozy town strolls. Here’s how we suggest soaking up the season:
Alpacas on the Rocks (Weed):Visit this year-round farm and meet alpacas, mini horses, donkeys and other animals. Check them out over a weekend and maybe buy a handmade scarf, some mittens or a fuzzy alpaca hat!
Greenhorn Park (Yreka): Hike among oak and pine trees, perfect for leaf-peeping and photography. Grab lunch to go for an autumn picnic in the park.
Historic Miner Street (Yreka): Explore Gold Rush-era buildings, antique shops, art galleries, and hop over to the Siskiyou County Museum for a dose of local history. Shops are brimming with handmade gifts and treats, ideal for some early holiday shopping!
Siskiyou Ice Rink (Mount Shasta): Opening on November 15th, this outdoor ice rink is the perfect way to enjoy a brisk afternoon under the snowy peak of Mount Shasta. Rentals and lessons are also available!
Pickle Ball (Mount Shasta): Engage in some friendly competition and break a sweat on a brisk afternoon. A sport that is gaining in popularity because it is easy to learn, fun and social, and accessible in lots of places!
High Elevation Escapes
The further you climb, the more winter begins to show itself. Snow-dusted trails and alpine lakes offer a peaceful contrast to the fiery colors below. These high-altitude destinations are perfect for embracing winter’s quiet beauty while still enjoying the tail end of fall.
Mount Shasta Ski Park: Opens in late fall for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing. Check out the lodge for some cozy après, and live entertainment around the firepits!
Mount Shasta Nordic Center: On the road up to the Ski Park, a great place for snowshoeing and Cross Country Options. Warm up in the new wood-framed lodge after a day slushing in the snow.
Castle Lake: A stunning spot for early snowshoeing or simply watching the lake begin to freeze. Pack a winter picnic and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
McCloud Falls: A short hike rewards you with icy cascades and misty forest views. A popular place for families and photography enthusiasts!
