Discover a Romantic Escape in Siskiyou

Love is in the air as January fades away and February takes its place. Here in Siskiyou, we’re practically buzzing with the excitement of Valentine’s Day just around the corner. Who doesn’t love Love, after all? This year, instead of stressing about finding the perfect gift or planning the perfect date, consider making your Valentine’s Day epic with a trip to California’s real North. Whether you’re happily in the honeymoon phase or you’re going strong with a longtime sweetheart, Siskiyou has everything you need for a perfectly romantic escape.

Cozy Up, Lovebirds

Just like any successful relationship, a great getaway starts with a strong foundation. Choose from any of Siskiyou’s comfortable accommodations and soak in the beauty of your surroundings while your every need is taken care of.

Curl up with your loved one under the comforting shadow of Mount Shasta at Mount Shasta Resort, where you’ll enjoy absolute privacy amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery Siskiyou has to offer. These chalet accommodations provide you with everything you need for an intimate getaway, including a separate kitchen, a private balcony and a gas fireplace. A short walk through the trees on the resort’s property takes you right to the shores of Lake Siskiyou. While we don’t recommend swimming in it this time of year (brr!), the crystal-clear waters make an excellent backdrop for a romantic sunset stroll.

Treat yourself to a stay filled with historic hospitality at the McCloud Hotel, situated right along the Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway. You and your partner will feel completely at home at this charming hotel and you’ll truly want for nothing, as each thoughtful amenity ensures your stay is nothing short of perfect. Enjoy a complimentary glass of wine every afternoon for the duration of your stay as you unwind on the porch, wander the lush gardens or get to know the other guests in the common room. The hotel is also pet-friendly, if you have a fur baby you’re hoping to bring with you. Don’t worry — your pup will receive just as much VIP treatment as you will.

Add a little vintage flair to your trip with a stay at Cave Springs. Here, you can relax from within their cozy, fully renovated Airstreams, which are equipped with full kitchens, dining rooms and bathrooms. Through the end of February, you can use the promo code “SnowMo25” to receive 25% off any stay of two nights or more

Over on the west side of Siskiyou, just a few minutes walk from historic downtown Etna, is the Collier Hotel, a repurposed home that is perfect for a private getaway. The house sleeps 12, with 3 fully private rooms available to choose from (while the other 3 are semi-private and connected). Take in the sights from the hotel’s stunning wraparound porch as you inhale that Siskiyou air and enjoy a moment with your sweetheart.

Step into the Butte Valley Bed and Breakfast, a lovingly restored 90-year-old house, formerly the valley’s hospital, now offering six beautifully furnished bedrooms, including an ADA suite, cozy living and reading areas, and a picturesque outdoor space with a garden, kitchen, and patio seating for up to 40 guests. Relax in the hot tub after enjoying a delicious breakfast included with your stay.

Paint the Town Red (And Pink)

No matter what area of Siskiyou you find yourselves in, there are plenty of ways to enjoy all the region has to offer.

Try something a little outside the box and embark on a guided tour courtesy of Mount Shasta Vortex Tours. This journey through the beautiful wilderness of Mount Shasta is more than a physical one; it’s a spiritual journey, too. Ahead of your tour, you and your partner can share your desires and intentions with the knowledgeable guides, and your tour will be tailored to your individual spirits. Reconnect with both nature and one another as you experience the renewing energy of the mountain.

Of course, a trip to the spa can do quite a lot for the spirit, too. It’s Valentine’s Day, which means you should treat both yourself and your partner to a little TLC. Head to Glo Skin & Body Spa in historic Yreka and enjoy the pampering you both deserve. While you’re in Yreka, pop into Twigs & Sprigs and surprise your sweetheart with a handcrafted flower arrangement or gift basket. For a fun activity you can do together, Bella Art Works is a perfect stop. Let your creativity flow and create a heartfelt work of art as you enjoy ice cream, grown-up grilled cheeses and more. With your pottery creation in hand, stroll a bit further into downtown Yreka and stop for a caffeine boost at Zephyr Books & Coffee. At this combination bookstore and coffee shop, you’ll find plenty to browse, hand-in-hand with your special someone. See if you can split off and find books to surprise each other with while you’re there — then, you can spend an afternoon or evening cuddled up with your favorite person and a new read.

Fall in Love with Siskiyou’s Outdoors

There is nothing more romantic than escaping into the outdoor wonders that Siskiyou so proudly offers. Explore stunning hiking trails, find the perfect backdrop for a cute photo or two and create memories that will last a lifetime. One such hiking trail is the McCloud River Waterfalls Trail, a beginner-friendly hike that winds through a few miles of serene forest, following the McCloud River far below you. Explore the Lower, Middle and Upper Falls, each of which provides an excellent opportunity for a romantic moment against the backdrop of tumbling water.

For marriage-minded couples, you can get yourselves hitched in a memorable ceremony atop the snowy peaks of Mount Shasta, thanks to the completely free Valentine’s Day wedding special offered by Mt. Shasta Ski Park. Tie the knot and share an exhilarating ski run down the mountain with your new spouse — all you need is a marriage license, and the ski park will provide the officiant, roses and champagne. They also offer vow renewals.

If mountain peaks aren’t your thing, you can delve into the earth and explore some of California’s oldest underground formations. Pluto’s Cave, for instance, is an ancient lava tube that, nowadays, makes for a pretty fantastic hike. It’s a beginner-friendly, easy-in-and-out trail, so no worries if you and your partner aren’t up for something more challenging

Speaking of ancient lava formations — even in the winter time, the Lava Beds National Monument is a must-see in east Siskiyou. At this historic wonder, you can explore over 700 different caves, formed up to 65,000 years ago by lava flows. You’ll also find works of Native American rock art sites and an informative visitor’s center where you can learn about this natural marvel.

Delectable Dates

Once you’ve worked up an appetite exploring the region, we recommend heading back to your home away from home to refresh, reset and get a little dressed up. After all, doesn’t everyone love an excuse for a fancy dinner date? (Of course, finery isn’t a requirement — we’re pretty laid-back here.)

If you happen to be staying at the McCloud Hotel, then you’ll find Sage Restaurant a convenient date spot. Even if you aren’t staying at the hotel, the restaurant is worth a visit. This beautiful, intimate bistro-style restaurant represents the very best of California cuisine, utilizing fresh, locally sourced ingredients in each dish to create truly gourmet food.

Over in Yreka, The Wine Bar & Bistro makes for a great date night spot. Enjoy small bites, an excellent beer selection and of course, some really great wine. They also often host live music, so keep an eye on their website to see if you can catch a performance while you’re there. Or, head to Black Bart’s Grill on Yreka’s historic Miner Street. Sweep your sweetheart off their feet at this gold-era themed pub and restaurant. They serve pre-fixe dinners on Fridays and Saturdays only so check their social media for the latest menus.

Book a distillery tour at Denny Bar Co. Distillery for dinner and a show, ending with a complimentary tasting of this Etna restaurant’s house-distilled spirits. Their expansive menu has something that will please every palate, while the restaurant’s intimate ambiance sets the perfect scene for a romantic dinner for two.
